Eiffel's Tower: And the World's Fair Where Buffalo Bill Beguiled Paris, the Artists Quarreled, and Thomas Edison Became a Count
Tuesday, August 11th at 7 PM
The critically acclaimed author of Conquering Gotham presents a
compelling account of the Eiffel Tower's creation and a superb portrait of Belle Epoque France. As Eiffel held court that summer
atop his one-thousand-foot tower, a remarkable host of artists and personalities
- Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley, Gauguin,
Whistler, and Edison - traveled to Paris and
the Exposition Universelle to mingle and make
their mark.
Like The Devil in the White City and David McCullough's accounts of the
building of the Brooklyn Bridge, Eiffel's
Tower combines technological and social history to create a richly textured
portrayal of an age of aspiration, dreams, and programs.
"Enjoyable history of one of the world's greatest monuments and some
significant surrounding figures."

MELANIE GIDEON will read from
The Slippery Year
Tuesday, August 18th at 7 PM
Gideon's memoir, a hilariously probing account of personal growth and stasis,
is her attempt to answer that existential query, "Is this all there is?" At 44, she chronicles a year in which she confronts both the fantasies of her receding youth and the realities of midlife with a husband, a child, and a dog (one of whom runs away). Epiphanies abound, and the author takes those small lessons and effectively analyzes them in ways useful to a wide readership. Women in particular will appreciate her musings on motherhood: "There comes a time in every mother's life when it becomes very clear that your child is a much better person than you are."
"Refreshing and sassy, with more than a dash of tenderness thrown in."
