The Stop Community Food Centre's Job Posting:
Community Food Animator

Full-time, 12 month contract (probable extension)

The Stop Community Food Centre, a leading edge food security organization (www.thestop.org), is seeking an experienced community developer to work in Toronto Community Housing (TCHC) buildings, focusing in Scarborough, to facilitate the establishment of new community gardens and other food programs as determined by TCHC residents.

While based out of The Stop, the successful candidate will work as an integral member of the Community Food Animators Project team. The Community Food Animators Project is a partnership of four leading food security organizations in Toronto: Afri-Can Food Basket, FoodShare Toronto, Second Harvest, and The Stop Community Food Centre. The City funded Food Animators Project works in partnership with community leaders and agency staff in diverse, high-need neighbourhoods in Toronto's inner-suburbs to improve food access through community development, with an emphasis on community gardens, community kitchens, fresh produce markets and enhancing existing emergency food programs

Responsibilities:
- Organize community meetings with key stakeholders to determine interest and need for community food programs in identified TCHC communities
- Provide hands-on assistance in launching community food projects
- Encourage leadership and involvement of tenants and community leaders in project planning, design, implementation, and evaluation
- Provide expertise and resources in community organizing
- Foster project sustainability through capacity building
- Work with Community Food Animator team and project partners to organize quarterly City -wide training sessions
- Work with Community Food Animator team and project partners to organize yearly bus tour of food programs

Qualifications, skills and abilities:
- Demonstrated experience as a community developer
- Demonstrated experience working on community food security initiatives including community gardens, kitchens and/or markets
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, conflict resolution and written communication skills
- Significant experience working in low-income and culturally/racially diverse communities
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work alone and as part of team
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends as required
- A valid driver's licence
- Ability to speak a language in addition to English is an asset

This is a 12-month full-time, contract position beginning July 2006 and continuing to July 2007 with possibility of extension. Salary: $36,500 plus benefits. Start: As soon as possible

Responsibilities

- Ensure quality, consistency and impact of all EDC external communications.
- Lead the components of organizational and program development in the areas of branding, promotions, messaging and distribution.
- Direct the management of a program portfolio.
- Responsible for overall direction of programs including strategic program design, supervision of program staff, program evaluation.
- Explore options for funding and make recommendations to the Development Team.
- Contribute as a member of the EDC Management and Development Teams
- Direct research, writing, editing, and production management of organizational resource materials, both print and electronic.
- Oversee web site development and electronic communications.
- Provide regular reports to the President and funding partners.

Qualifications

- Degree in Communications, Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geography or related discipline.
- Superior communications skills and writing skills with proven experience writing for various target audiences.
- Five years relevant communications, social marketing and community mobilizing experience. Additional experience in developing and managing community-based programs would be an asset.
- Strong understanding of strategic use of Web resources.
- Well-developed marketing and media skills.
- Strong verbal, interpersonal and negotiation skills, including facilitation and supervisory abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and with the ability to meet tight deadlines.
- Print and electronic production experience.
- Strong computer skills with special emphasis on MS Office Suite, Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.

FoodShare Toronto is looking for a passionate food systems Fresh Produce Market and Farmer Outreach Coordinator with knowledge of the Toronto's diverse high-needs communities, of alternative local food distribution (CSA's, food boxes, farmers' markets) and of Ontario farmers. The coordinator will implement and evaluate the markets to develop a sustainable model within FoodShare, and help us to continue to build positive relationships with farmers.
