Hello Firstname

Wednesday 11 July
Next Wednesday we welcome Andrea Hargreaves MPAGB EFIAP/b BPE3 PSA4 who will be presenting her talk entitled The Art of Metamorphosis. Andrea is a national and international award-winning photographer and digital artist based in Selby, North Yorkshire.
Her digital artworks are composed entirely from photographs she has taken, including all textures & overlays. Many of her photographs & digital artworks have been exhibited widely throughout the UK in photographic salons & exhibitions and she has had images in publications such as Yorkshire Life magazine, Amateur Photography magazine & in local papers.
As a member of the Yorkshire Photographic Union Executive Committee, (the organisation which serves all Photographic Clubs and Societies in Yorkshire) she is the Mentoring co-ordinator for members wishing to take Awards for Photographic Merit, and she is the Secretary for Advancing Photography within Yorkshire clubs.
"The Art of Metamorphosis" begins with a brief presentation of images with which Andrea used to gain her distinctions followed by presentations on how her work-flow developed into what it is today. She has a couple of very short presentations showing how three images are constructed/de-constructed. The talk finishes with her briefly talking about her latest set of Valkyrie images. To see more of Andrea's images, please visit her website at www.andreahargreaves.art

DI Group
Next Monday, 9 July, is the monthly meeting of the Digital Imaging Group. As usual all members are welcome, even more so if you bring along pictures, either for general discussion or just to show off what you've been up to lately. Pictures can be either prints or projected images (these should be saved as jpegs on a USB memory stick).
An added incentive is the fact that Ashwin will no doubt be bringing along his usual selection of chocolate biscuits.

Studio Group Competition
The second half of last Wednesday's meeting, following the AGM was the annual Studio Group Competition. This took the form of a "knock out" competition, with members voting for images, which were displayed in pairs. The voting went on until just 3 images remained and these were voted on to select 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

The results were as follows:

Photographer Image Title Position
Mike Bigger  Hidden Smile 1st
Ashwin Chauhan      Do I Trust Him 2nd
Ashwin Chauhan Is That Really You      3rd

2018-2019 Subscription Rates
The current subscription rates are set out on page 3 of the Handbook and Programme. The rates are reviewed annually. They were last increased at the Annual General Meeting in 2016.
It was known before the Society moved to Unit 13 that an increase in subscription rates would be necessary because of the inevitable increase in expenditure resulting from the use of larger premises with better facilities even after allowing for income from the hire of the clubrooms and an increase in membership. Now that we have settled in to Unit 13 a better picture has emerged of both the running cost and the income we can expect. This year’s accounts show a surplus of income over expenditure, before revaluing the investments, of £2,422. However, they also show that, as has been the case for many years, the Society is heavily dependent on income from the Bristol Salon and the photography course. The profit on the 2017 Salon was £9,221, the profit on the 2017 photography course was £4,243. Without this extra income from these activities, which rely on the efforts of a small number of members, expenditure would have exceeded income by £11,042.
Council therefore recommends that subscription rates should be increased and that (as was the Society’s practice for many years before the move) they should in future be kept in line with inflation. The recommended increase is £5 to each subscription rate with two exceptions. It is recommended that the rate for a new member for one three-month period only should be 40% of the normal full rate and that the rate for a full time student holding a Student Union card should be £47 rather than £45 to reduce the number of different subscription rates. At present there are no student members.
The recommended rates are set out below. As before, the lowest subscription rate will apply to eligible members:

Normal subscription for each member £65
If the member is the spouse or partner of a member living at the same address the normal rate for the second person is  £47
Full time student holding a Student Union card £47
Member living more than 50 miles from Bristol £21
Member aged 70 years and over with 20 years continuous membership £21
New member for one three-month period only £26

Council believes that these subscription rates are reasonable and compare well with other clubs in the Bristol area given the number of meetings and the facilities available.

The motion to accept the above proposal was carried unanimously at the AGM. The rate increases therefore come into effect for all subscriptions due or unpaid after the date of the AGM.

Photography Course
Applications for places on the 2018 BPS Photography Course are now open. Please visit the BPS website by clicking here for further details. It is worth noting that if you are thinking of joining the course, then a £30 discount applies to BPS members.
Please remember that the revenue from the course is one of the main methods that the Society has of keeping your subscriptions as low as they are (despite the latest increase) and that publicity is the key to a successful course. Could you, therefore, please tell anyone you know who is vaguely interested in learning about photography about the course. If you have a Facebook account please publicise it on your page. You can download a copy of the flyer/poster to include in your FB page by following this link.

DPI COMPETITIONS - IMAGE SIZE CHANGE
With the advent of the new club room projector, the size of the images for all projected image competitions will change. The image dimensions will change to a maximum of 1600x1200 pixels. This change is in line with other organisations, e.g. PAGB, and will come into effect in the new club year starting in September.
This should pose few problems, but there is one consequence for those perhaps less technically minded. Many may well have already prepared images held on file which are smaller than the planned new dimensions (for example the 1400x1050 presently used). You should be aware that simply resizing these smaller images by ‘inflating’ them to the new dimensions is to be avoided. Expanding images in this way usually leads to significant loss of image quality. Far better to return to the largest image available that you have processed and prepare a new image by reducing that to the new size for submission.

Studio
The next Studio event will be an all-day lighting masterclass on Friday 3 August, the model will be Tara Sumnera a full-time agency represented fashion model who has appeared in Elle magazine, Vogue Italia, Fitnet magazine (front cover) and has worked with Channel 4

We will also have Darren Fellows who is the Technical Advisor and resident photographer for Rotolight who will bring the Rotolight selection of LED lights.

This should be a great day, the cost will be £30 to include the model and lunch Darren will demonstrate the lighting and give tutorials and there will be plenty of time to photograph Tara using the different set ups. The session will start at 10.00am and finish at 4.00pm, the last hour of which will be a tutorial on how to process the images from the day in Lightroom and Photoshop.

To book on and pay please use this link. It is a private event so there is a password to enter the page, the password is - Bristolps

We are expecting this to be a well-attended event and that the parking may be an issue as we do not expect there will be enough parking spaces as it’s a working day and all the other units on the estate will be in use so please think about parking elsewhere or perhaps using the train.

Warwick - Important Notice, Change of Venue
Due to the over-run of the upgrading work on the usual Theatre used, we have been offered the Butterworth Theatre in the same building for this year’s Championship.   It is a great deal larger but the lower area tiered seating (500+ seats) will be used.
The access to the building will be the same as every other year through the glass doors in front of you as you come out of Car Park 7.
We will be using the Foyer as you come through the entrance and then along the left-hand wall past the Booking Office, and the Café on your right, you will find another Foyer area where the entrance to the Butterworth Theatre is on the left.
In this area you will find the Programmes and Badge Holders being issued and Raffle Tickets sold.   We also expect to have 7 Trade Stands for our sponsors in the areas.
There will be no access to the Theatre until at least 9.30am as we have to start again learning the set-up.
Admission is by ticket purchased in advance.

Studio Bookings
Would members booking the studio please note:
  • Mike Bigger, the Bookings Manager, should be notified of any cancellation of a booking, as soon as it is known that the booking will not be required. This allows the studio to be re-booked in the event of another member requiring that date.
  • If keys to the clubrooms have been provided to the member, they should be returned to the Mike Bigger immediately after use to enable them to be issued to any other member who may have booked the studio. It should be remembered that Mike lives at Yatton and for him to have to collect keys from members involves a fairly hefty round trip.

Beyond The Wall - Dates For Your diary
Here is some advanced notice of a couple of future events being organised by David Grierson at Beyond the Wall.

Please note, the meeting scheduled for Monday July 23rd (Producing B & W images in Lightroom) has had to be postponed. Watch this space for the revised date.....

The following is from BTW leader, David Grierson:

YouTube: Many members have mentioned certain names who have great learning sites on YouTube. What I’d like to create is a database of these names, so we can all benefit.
A couple I use are:
  • Anthony Morganti - click here
  • Photos in colour - click here
Please email your “go to” sites to mail@dgrierson.co.uk and I’ll publish the results.

Following on from the recent talk on mount cutters by Longridge, they have now written to say that members can get a discount on the cutters, however to get this discount, orders will have to be placed over the phone, quoting Bristol Photographic Society and Chris Longridge.

A Home For Old Paper
We have received the following request:

I am a volunteer for UNSEEN which Is a registered charity (no 1127620) that supports survivors of human trafficking. We have three safe houses and use a range of means to aid survivors in their recovery including photography. I am appealing to Bristol Photographic Society to ask if any photographers have any left-over or redundant photo printing paper of any kind that they would be willing to donate.

Please could you circulate this email amongst your membership and if they can help they can contact me at nck_mayfield@yahoo.com to arrange collection or they can contact UNSEEN directly on 0303 040 2888 for further information?
Kind regards

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Studio Bookings
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.
