And just like that, week 1 is complete! It was a busy week for us at the high school. We took in over 40 additional students from our spring student count. Classes are full!

The 9th-grade students have been given "the talk" as they refer to it. Mr. Westerlund, Mr. Mull, and I take the boys while Ms. Wenk and Ms. Kukal speak to the girls. The boy discussions revolve around boys becoming young men and the responsibilities/consequences that go along with that. The girl discussions are centered on similar things. The goal is to get the students to understand that as high school students, their words and their actions are looked at differently by society.

All class meetings reviewed the recent cases of sexting that have overwhelmed area school districts. I reminded the students that the sending of nude pictures of a person under 18, even if it is yourself, is considered child pornography. The courts are addressing the issue with increasing consequences. I urged the students to make sure their "phone identity" was clean. I also told them that if they receive a photo they need to delete it right away or better yet, take it to the police. The best thing we adults can do is to have open discussions with our children about sexting. I know it is a tough subject.

There is a home football game tonight versus Ludington.

The Be Red campaign kicked off this week and 8 students won prizes just for doing positive things. This is the initial phase of our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support program.

No school on Friday or Monday.
