Hello, Firstname |

|
Next Wednesday 4 December we welcome Peter Crane ARPS to BPS. Peter will be presenting his talk Street Photography My Way. He says of his talk:
Street photography for me is an instinctive urge and after nearly 8 years of wandering the streets with my camera it still is to some extent about staying curious and inspired me and then looking for that decisive moment, I'm often in fairly busy public places, just looking for things that move or inspire me in some way, hoping that if they move me, they may move the viewer. I'm always looking for characters and at times I've followed someone just to get a better image, perhaps with a better background, just trying to tell a story in a single frame or trying to capture a decisive moment. For me it's important to try and blend in or be inconspicuous, so that I don't stand out or get noticed.
Below are a couple of Peter's images.

BPS will be taking part in the annual WCPF Inter-Club Digital Projected Image Competition (DPIC) on Sunday 9 February. The event will be held at the Exeter Corn Exchange, tickets go on sale from 1 December - click here to buy your tickets.
|
A date for your diary: BTW will be hosting a "Practical Exercise in Mounting" (presumably not the carnal variety!) on Tuesday 28 January at 7.30pm. This will be a hands-on evening when all the mysteries surrounding print mounting will be explained and demonstrated. Bring along a small print (max 7" x 5") to play with.
A visit to Steve Russell Studios has been arranged for the evening of 27 Feb 2020 - time to be advised. There is a limit to numbers so a "pecking order" will be set up nearer the time.
Further details of both events closer the date.

The 2020 Bristol Salon is now open for entries. For those of you who aren't too sure what the Bristol Salon is: it is an international photographic exhibition that has been running since 1947 and is the largest exhibition of its type in the UK attracting entries from nearly 70 different countries. For the first time since 1993, we are including two print sections!
Entrants may submit up to 16 images across 4 digital sections (Open, Monochrome, Photo Travel & Nature) and, new for 2020, 8 prints in 2 print sections (Open & Monochrome). These are put before a panel of selectors who pick the top 20% to 25% or so to be accepted. Entry for BPS members is free as long as we receive your entry before 18 January, after that you will have to pay the full fee.
To help you with your entry there is a short tutorial that can be downloaded by following this link, all other details are on the BPS website. When entering, be sure to tick the box on the first page of the entry system to say that you are a BPS member and fill in your BPS membership number which you will find at the top of this newsletter. When you get to the payment page at the end, click ALREADY PAID.
Here's hoping that we see a rush of entries, but in the meantime if you have any queries, feel free to email me at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk

Well done to Graham Pears who gained his DPAGB last week.
Christmas has come early for Sue O’Connell; she has been shortlisted for Travel Photographer of the Year 2019 in five categories with a portfolio and also 6 individual images. Sue has been an award winner in four previous years but as the competition gets ever fiercer with over 20,000 entries from 140 countries this year, just being shortlisted is a significant achievement. Results due in January.
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Norman Davis has an Manfrotto Fluid Head Gimbal head (MVH500AH) for a flat head tripod.
The unit is in its original box and is unused, a snip at £35.
If you are interested in this, please either see Norman at our Wednesday meeting, or email him at dellpitch5@gmail.com
If you have anything to sell, or you're looking for something to buy, just let me know and I'll include it here. Please bear in mind, we only advertise items for BPS members.

WEX/Calumet Workshops At Unit 13 |
The secrets of commercial food photography|Christmas edition with Esther Ling (Bristol) Panasonic
Friday 6 December, 11:00am – 3:00pm £50
Join Esther Ling as she explores the secrets of food photography when working commercially, with this Christmas edition of shooting food for advertisement. The methodology behind setting up efficient shoots has been set up over many years to ensure photographers are able to capture mouth-watering images that delight the customer and exaggerate the real product to have maximum engagement.
From potato substituted for ice cream, to painted raw turkeys, images of food have been tampered with throughout the industry for years. Esther will show you the best way to work and help you with gaining portfolio shots for when you work on the real thing and how to ensure you are prepared for working commercially at Christmas. We will have a full set up for you
Wild Arena|Macro moth photography Canon
Tuesday 10 December, 10am - 1pm OR 2pm - 5pm £30
These nocturnal creatures are a great way to learn macro-wildlife photography.
During the workshop, Wild Arena will present and demonstrate the fundamentals of macro photography and capturing stunning shots of wildlife close up.
We will cover a variety of topics including:
- The choice & use of macro lenses
- Keeping things in focus
- The creative use of depth-of-field
- Managing movement in the images with shutter speeds.
You will then have the chance to put these techniques into practice and get up close and capture these intricate insects. The moths will be displayed under photographic lighting and woodland dioramas, creating a real-world look indoors.
The sessions are ideally suited to customers using DSLR/Mirrorless cameras and we usually have some demonstration lenses available to try out on the day if you do not already own one.
With group sizes of a maximum of 12 delegates and the convenient and comfortable setting of Unit13, these days are great value for those photographers wishing to develop their skills in macro and close-up.
Full details on all of these workshops can be found here.
