ABOUT THE PEOPLE’S CONVERSATION

The People’s Conversation is a project of The Wheel, in partnership with the Carnegie UK Trust.

As we approach the centenary of 1916, Ireland reflects on 100 years of change. It has been a journey marked by great social improvements and economic development, interspersed with periods of economic and social stagnation. Most recently we have experienced a return to large-scale unemployment as the Celtic Tiger boom turned to bust. We now live in a different Ireland, and Irish people have radically different expectations of the respective roles of the State, communities, families and citizens.

All of this raises questions about our attitude to citizenship. What does it mean to be a citizen of this republic? Do Irish people have a strong sense of their rights and responsibilities as citizens? What do citizens expect of the State and what is expected of citizens? How can citizens and communities play a greater role in shaping their future?
We believe the time is right to think about a new vision for citizenship in Ireland. See www.peoplesconversation.ie/about/
