On Wednesday 9 October we welcome Robert Millin MFIAP, FBPE, EFIAP/d1, MPSA, SPSA, DPAGB, GPU Hermes from Wigan10 photo group. Robert will be presenting his talk, Confessions of a Competition Addict. Robert says of his talk:
My talk will cover a range of photographic genres with sport and travel featuring in the first half and loads of other genres in the second half. I will talk about how I go about shooting my images and what I do with them. I will probably bring along prints of my MFIAP panel too. We will have some laughs along the way, enjoy some stories and see lots of images.

|
I remain an active competitor chasing down EFIAP/d3 and as a member of Wigan 10 for almost 7 years I have enjoyed success in the club world too. There should be something for everyone. |

The monthly DI meeting is on next Monday, 7 October, this time on the first Monday instead of the usual second Monday of the month. This is because Photography Course will be occupying the clubroom for their studio sessions. As usual everyone is invited to join in, especially with your images as prints or digital files for projection (as jpg files of any size and sRGB colour space on a memory stick in a folder of your name).
The summer holiday season is over, and I expect you will be sorting through your images if you have been away on a holiday or a photo trip. If you are pondering over which ones are most suitable for the new season of club or other competitions, please bring them over to the DI meeting to get feedback from other members or just show off what you have been doing.
For the longer term i.e. November onwards I have been thinking of more hands-on work, possibly on separate days, to carry on from the studio session in August. A few members have expressed interest in using those images in their work. There are of course other possibilities in progressing forward from the workshops earlier in the year. The best way is just doing it. If anyone has specific ideas or requests, I would love to hear them.

WEX/Calumet Workshop At Unit 13 |
Wild Arena | Macro Moth photography - £30
Tuesday 10 December, 10am - 1pm OR 2pm - 5pm
These nocturnal creatures are a great way to learn macro-wildlife photography. During the workshop, Wild Arena will present and demonstrate the fundamentals of macro photography and capturing stunning shots of wildlife close up. Topics covered will include:
- The choice & use of macro lenses
- Keeping things in focus
- The creative use of depth-of-field
- Managing movement in the images with shutter speeds.
You will then have the chance to put these techniques into practice and get up close and capture these intricate insects. The moths will be displayed under photographic lighting and woodland dioramas, creating a real-world look indoors.
The sessions are ideally suited to customers using DSLR/Mirrorless cameras and we usually have some demonstration lenses available to try out on the day if you do not already own one.
With group sizes of a maximum of 12 delegates and the convenient and comfortable setting of Unit13, these days are great value for those photographers wishing to develop their skills in macro and close-up.
For further details and booking, please follow this link.
WEX are holding an open day on Thursday 17 October at their Bristol branch (from 10am until 4pm. Full details here.

Architectural Photographer of the Year - Organised by The Museum of Bath Architecture and Bath Preservation Trust, this year’s competition will have three categories with two new themed categories:
Architecture of Entertainment
From ancient amphitheatres to then multiplex cinema architects have been designing entertainment spaces for thousands of years. This year we are setting a challenge for photographers to capture images of architecture, interior or exterior, that have an entertainment theme, be it the Sydney Opera House or the Theatre Royal.
Bath: After the Georgians
Most people who come to visit Bath are here to see the Georgian city. However, as the city has expanded and developed over the years, so too has its architecture. Even within the centre you can find the odd 1960’s brutalist building and as you travel further out of the centre great examples of Victorian and Edwardian styles can be found. What can you find? What buildings old or new catch your eye?
Junior architectural photographer of the year
Open to photographers under the age of 19. We want to see what architecture inspires you. What do you prefer old buildings or ultra-modern? What’s the coolest building you’ve seen?

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
