Striking Poses: A Visual Diagogue

MAX FALLON
Striking Poses: A Visual Dialogue
Thursday, January 11 at 7 PM

Bay Area photographer Max Fallon has traveled to 39 countries in five continents simply asking people if he might take their picture. The results are found in Fallon's dramatic collection of photographs, Striking Poses: A Visual Dialogue. Fallon will discuss the creative process behind his stunning photographs while encouraging camera-toting travelers to not only take pictures of monuments and mountains, but to engage people they meet along the way in a ¨visual dialogue.¨

Sacred Games

VIKRAM CHANDRA
Sacred Games
Saturday, January 13 at 7 PM

Seven years in the making, Vikram Chandra's keenly anticipated new novel, Sacred Games, draws the reader deep into the life of a famous Mumbai (Bombay) detective and an infamous gang lord in a sort of Indian version of The Godfather. Chandra's writing draws from the best of Victorian fiction (most particularly Dickens) and mystery novels (think of the blockbusters by James Ellroy). A starred review from Booklist says that Sacred Games has it all: ¨Corruption, murder, arms dealing, Bollywood, plastic surgery, and a superstar guru on an apocalyptic mission. [It is] a splendidly big, finely made book destined to dazzle a big audience.¨

LEARN TO KNIT
Envious of those women and men on the train or at the cafe who, with knitting needles flying, create beautiful wearable objects? Do you want to learn this ancient and meditative craft? This four-session class will equip you with all the basic skills you need to make your own scarf, hat, shawl, poncho, or blanket: casting on (long-tail technique), reading a pattern, knitting and purling using the English (a.k.a. American or throw) method, adding a new ball of yarn, increasing and decreasing, casting off, and weaving in ends. You'll start your own project in the third class. A set of straight needles and skein of yarn are provided for learning techniques; students will be given guidance as to what to purchase for their first project.

4 two-hour sessions, $90 (includes materials)

INTERMEDIATE KNITTING TECHNIQUES
Whether you learned to knit at Grandmas's knee or just picked it up a few months ago, this class will help you perfect your techniques and learn new ones, enabling you to tackle more advanced projects and produce more professional garments. This four-session course will teach you how to repair mistakes such as dropped stitches; execute different increase, decrease, and selvedge edge stitches; pick up stitches for sleeves, neck edges, and the like; and seam garments like a pro. Students are welcome to air their knitting quandaries in class. If time permits, we will practice some of the many stitches available beyond basic stockinette and garter. Yarn for practicing techniques will be provided; students should bring a pair of size 8 (5 mm) needles, straight or circular, to class.

4 two-hour sessions, $85 (includes materials)

FUTURE CLASSES
—Spinning with a Drop Spindle (1 two-hour session)
—Knitting a Toy in the Round (2 two-hour sessions)
—Making a Felted Hat or Bag (2 two-hour sessions)
—Knitting Socks (3 two-hour sessions)

INSTRUCTOR BIO
Although her students claim she "came out of the womb knitting," Thea Gray began knitting in third grade. She hasn't stopped since and has even flown 6000 miles in a weekend to polish her couture knitting techniques. Because she understands the many obstacles to learning a handicraft, she has developed foolproof strategies for helping her students overcome them.

We'd like to offer knitting classes on Sundays at either 10:30 AM or 4 PM, and possibly on Monday evenings from 7-9 PM. So we may measure interest, please send an email to knitting@bookshopwestportal.com if you would like to sign up for a class.

Please let us know:
1) Which class you're interested in and
2)Which time(s) would be most convenient.

We'll get back to you once the schedule is set. Classes will begin in early February.
Minimum class size will be 4 participants, maximum class size will be 8 participants.
