The New Year kicks off on 4 January with an evening presented by Pete McCloskey FRPS APAGB, when he will be showing "Prints from the Archive". This is a presentation of some of the prints from our own Society's archive, which is normally kept in the Bristol City Archives (archives.bristol.gov.uk) and will include pictures from early in the 20th Century, right through to the current day. The evening will be a graphic illustration of how photography has changed over the last century and will be accompanied by the usual excellent presentation skills of Pete and if his previous archive presentations are anything to go by, it will be an extremely entertaining evening.

PSA Interclub Photo Travel Competition
|
BPS have recently entered the PSA's Photo Travel Division (PTD) Interclub Competition which is open to all PSA-member clubs. The competition is held over three rounds and is split into two groups, with each club being able to enter 6 images by 6 different members. Of the 22 clubs in our group, BPS came in a creditable 8th place with a score of 69 points (the winners had 75) in Round 1; as there are still another two rounds to go there is still plenty of time to catch up. Two of our images, by Sue O'Connell and Rob Gillet, were awarded HCs. Sue's image, Parking, was previously shown in the edition 217 of the newsletter, Rob's is reproduced below:

Bristol International Salon of Photography 2017
|
Just a few weeks left until the closing date for free entry to the 2017 Bristol Salon when you can give yourself
the chance of some glory on the international photography scene. This is a chance for members to dip their toes into the murky waters of the international competition world without having to fork out hard earned money to enter. Having seen the standard of images being produced by some of our newer members in recent club competitions it has got to be worth having a go. The salon is an
international photographic exhibition of World standing that has been running since the mid-1940s, it is the largest exhibition of its type in the UK attracting entries from
nearly 70 different countries. Entrants submit up to 16 images across 4 sections
(Open, Monochrome, Photo Travel and Nature) which are put before a panel of
selectors who pick the top 20% to 30% or so to be accepted. Entry for BPS members is
free provided we receive your entry before 21 January, after that you will
have to pay the full fee. This might seem like a long way off, but time flies and you'll soon find that the closing date is upon you, so beat the rush and get your entry in now! To help you with your entry there is a
small tutorial that can be downloaded by following this link. When
entering, be sure to tick the box on the first page of the entry system to say
that you are a BPS member and fill in your BPS membership number which you will
find at the top of this newsletter; when you get to the payment page at the end,
click ALREADY PAID. Here's hoping that we see a rush of entries, but in
the meantime if you have any queries, feel free to email me at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk Full
details can found on the BPS website http://www.bristolphoto.org.uk/. All
the best Pete Howell & the Salon Team

A good year for images taken in our studio.
Mike Bigger had a pleasant surprise shortly before Christmas when he found out that one of his portrait images had won him a prize. Mike is a member of a Facebook group called "Learning Lighting Courses". This is a group of photographers (getting on for 300) who have been on a studio course run by Chris Burfoot ABIPP ARPS ASWPP. Chris is Broncolor Lighting Manager for Hasselblad UK and lecturer for RPS; Mike joined the group in November 2014 after going on an Art Nude Course at Laycock. The competition, organised by the group, was for monochrome portraits - here is Mike's winning image:

Our President, Barry Mead, had quite a good 2016 as far as acceptances in international exhibitions were concerned. The year saw Barry being gaining over 700 acceptances which included 86 Awards - 19 Gold Medals and 12 Silver medals and a FIAP Blue Pin for the most successful entrant in one exhibition the States. Of more interest to club members is that 23 of the awards came with images which originated from studio subjects taken in the BPS studio space. Many thanks are due to Nick Ball for organising the studio sessions.
Below are two of the images from studio sessions which have done very well, each of which got two Gold Medals as well as other awards. |
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers
of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't
include them all. So please only advise of awards or other
milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

If
you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the
details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers
through the Newsletter - send to the usual address. |
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list. |

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, if they are wrong, please let Carol know. |
If you have anything you think other members would like to know about, such as exhibitions, special events etc. please let me know at newsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk
