July 12 marks the 40th anniversary of the passing of the Video Recordings Act, the piece of legislation that changed the course of the video industry and still provides ample fodder for acres and acres of coverage in national newspapers, magazines and more. It was given its Royal Assent on this day, starting a lengthy process of classification all titles had to go through, including all on the shelves as it passed. It was a moment that saw the industry begin to shake off its “nasty” reputation, imposed by the government even as the BVA, which of course became BASE, was trying to get its own house in order. Now, 40 years later, many, especially independent labels sailed with extortionate classification costs for smaller films, would are that it’s no longer fit for purpose, as all manner of titles are available for streaming that don’t have to go through the same process. We’ll have more marking this momentous anniversary in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, it’s ironic that in a week that marks the 40th anniversary of the passing of the act, a man appeared in Swansea Crown Court charged with offences under the the legislation. Phillip Tobias has been given a suspended sentence and ordered to pay more than £25,000 after admitting a strong of charges. Tobias, of Quedgeley, Gloucestershire, had supplied p•rnographic magazines such as Club International to a string of Welsh retailers. Each mag was bagged and contained unclassified DVDs. Swansea council became aware of retailers selling the products and carried out test purchases at four newsagents and convenience stores in the area, All found the films inserted into the pages of the magazines. None were classified contrary to the Video Recordings Act 1984. Three further stores in Newport and Neath were also found to be selling them. Tobias admitted six charges of supplying unclassified pornographic films and 54 of possession of unclassified pornographic films with intent to supply. He was given a 10 month sentence for 12 months, ordered to complete 150 hours community service and given a Proceeds of Crime Act order and costs.
With the awards fast approaching – taking place earlier this year, Wednesday September 25, than the recent years’ November date – trade organisation BASE has unveiled the shortlist for the 2024 awards ceremony due to take place at the Roundhouse. The list covers more than 20 different categories, with Universal, with some 14 nods in all, ahead of Studiocanal with 11, Sony and Warner with six apiece, and Amazon, across its various arms from retail to production, and Lionsgate with four each. Liz Bales, Chief Executive, BASE said: “I genuinely believe that the BASE Awards are a unique celebration each year. We come together as a community and celebrate our successes and hard work, together. The volume of submissions this year was fantastic, building on the amazing growth we saw last year and the new categories we introduced, which ensure the awards are the broadest and most representative celebration possible. Congratulations to all those who have been shortlisted, and to everyone who entered. It is always an incredibly difficult job to pick the winners in an industry that surpasses itself year on year, and as always my huge thanks and appreciation to the judges for all their time and consideration. I can’t wait to celebrate with you all on the September 25.”

Rarewaves is one of the nominees in the physical retailer of the year category, as noted above, and it continues to grow its public profile too, having announced plans to sponsor a major film premiere. Blur: To The End, released by Altitude at cinemas next week, is being premiered next Tuesday, July 16, in the West End, and the company is sponsoring the high profile event, which is being attended by the band and their pals, The film, due on home entertainment formats later this year and also accompanied by a live album from the band, dovetails neatly with Rarewaves’ audience and straddles the worlds of film and music, like the retailer’s product. Rarewaves chairman, Brad Aspess MBE said: “This partnership is a new phase for Rarewaves.com’s development into a global brand, we are pleased to partner with Altitude on blur: To The End; and we believe it underlines our continued commitment to support physical media.” Commercial director Rudy Osorio added: “We’re very excited to be a sponsor of the event. We’ve sold 100s of 1000s of blur albums to their fans all over the world and we see this event as a terrific platform to engage with Music and Film fans, sharing our passion and celebrating blur’s amazing career.”
The Raygun caught up with Blur: To The End this week at a preview screening and it really does have huge commercial potential, not least given the size of the Wembley crowd who packed the venue to witness their biggest shows ever. It’s already earned some strong reviews and given their ongoing appeal and support for the project, expect this one to perform strongly among their devotees…
Monday July 8’s big release was Universal’s Monkey Man, the Dev Patel directorial debut, a Mumbai revenge tale that is, given the home entertainment industry’s long-running affinity with martial arts and more, is ideal for home formats. It comes to disc with a raft of extras that will further boost interest among biffer fans. Commenting on the release, Universal’s Johanna Beaven said: “We’re thrilled that the action-packed Monkey Man is now available on home entertainment featuring exclusive bonus features, such as an alternate beginning and ending for even more Dev Patel. We have a great campaign across Meta and YouTube making sure that Monkey Man is fighting fit and set up for success.”
Meanwhile, Universal is keeping itself busy with a raft of catalogue titles on the way, from drafting opportunities such as a 4K special edition of Twister on the way as interest in the franchise heightens thanks to the summer blockbuster sequel Twisters and more. Also due on shelves is a new to 4K edition of 2022 horror The Black Phone and a special anniversary 4K SKU of Shaun Of The Dead, marking 20 years since its release. Also due back on the block are a trio of titles from Universal’s library that are getting special edition treatment and a “bit of love” in the shape of Atomic Blonde, King Kong and The Northment. Perhaps most interesting are the new 4K special editions of Jaws 3 and Jaws The Revenge, due out at the end of July and August respectively. Both come in a gloss Steelbook with 4K and BD SKUs, with the package including a booklet, lobby cards and double-sided poster, all housed in a lenticular slipcase, with Jaws 3 including the 3D version of the film. Each of the two releases is limited to 2,000 units and both have sold out on pre-order, an impressive feat. Universal said the care and attention it had lavished on the sets will entice collectors, with the company’s John Partridge telling the Raygun: “If we can sell out of a 4k special edition of Jaws The Revenge, we can sell anything. The collector market is stronger than ever and they love the effort we are lavishing on these special editions.”
Out at cinemas on July 9 for one day only, but now seeing repeat screenings everywhere, is the latest from Lightbulb Film Distribution, Hundreds Of Beavers, which is as good a title for a film as you’ll see this or any other year. We’ve already covered the release of this slapstick black and white comedy, low on budget but high on inventiveness and creativity, but it really does need to be seen to be believed and, judging by social media, Lightbulb’s release at more than 50 screens on Tuesday helped the film build up a head of stream ahead of its digital and then physical media release. Here’s the company’s Matthew Kreuzer updating on the release. He said: “Here at Lightbulb Towers, we are super excited about the theatrical launch of Hundreds Of Beavers tonight. Along with our furry friends, we’ve been beavering and chipping away in the background with the help of Dave Woodward, booking key indie screens, and Strike Media, securing press reviews, and we’re delighted to say the film played in over 50 venues nationwide for one-night-only. Many of these cinemas were sold out. We’ve already had several encores booked in from the best performing screens, and we fully expect this unique and bonkers movie to run and run in cinemas for the foreseeable. After all, the best way to watch this hilarious movie is with a crowd of people on a big screen. Our Home Entertainment offering launches on July 22 on all the key Digital platforms and the Blu-ray is released on August 5. Based on the amazing reviews so far, just look on Rotten Tomatoes, we are confident that the keen interest from cinema goers will continue through to Home Ent formats.”
More Monday releases now and another key title landing in stores on July 8 was from Shameless, with the release of classic giallo Strip Nude For Your Killer. The imprint, as noted here previously, has already put in place a new strategy and improved elements for its release, and this Edwige Fenech starrer comes under that new policy. The company’s Garwin Spencer Davison said: “Shameless continues to gather positive appreciations with its new releases. After a reboot by the team concentrating on improving the quality of the releases, these now benefit inside - on disc - from systematic stringently controlled new material sources and new encoding /authoring lab. And outside the new strand of Shameless release are presented in a unique Shameless-branded Blu-ray cases (where an embossed Shameless replaces the standard Blu-ray logo badge) These highly-collectable imprints now fit inside minimalist-designed serial-numbered O-Cards, available only for the publishers’ first pressing.” He continued: “Strip Nude for Your Killer is a genre-bending blend of giallo and slasher that shocked audiences. This influential film, said to have impacted the Hollywood slasher genre, is set against the electrifying backdrop of 1970s Milan's fashion world. It follows a series of brutal murders targeting models from a prestigious agency. This 2K-restored Blu-ray from Shameless features both versions of the opening sequence and exclusive extras.”
One of last week’s big screenings saw us at the Prince Charles Cinema in the heart of London’s West End for a sold out presentation of Studiocanal’s newly-restored version of the Francis Ford Coppola classic The Conversation. The film, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, was aired in its sumptuous new version ahead of a July 5 return into cinemas and the home entertainment release of a two-disc 4K UHD edition, complete with a raft of extras. Better still, a glimpse of the kind of weight of extras was offered up by Coppola’s editor for the film, Walter Murch, who was on hand for a post-screening Q&A. Murch contributes to the hefty extras package on the discs with, among other elements, a commentary, and the Q&A saw him giving away secrets of the film, its editing and its shoot. The whole evening also provided the perfect launch pad for the film and Studiocanal’s release plans. Studiocanal’s Alison Arber said: “We are thrilled that Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece; THE CONVERSATION can be seen in cinemas again for the 50th anniversary and audiences get the opportunity to see the fantastic new 4K restoration on the big screen. Walter Murch has been incredibly supportive of the release and will be appeared again at the BFI this week to dazzle audiences with another Q&A session. And if that wasn't enough, the 4K UHD collector's edition releases on July 15.
To the rather swish, bijou The Garden Cinema in London’s Covent Garden for the first in what our hosts Arrow said would hopefully become a regular series of screenings of forthcoming home entertainment fare from the company. And it started with a bang too, as the company screened its recently released 4K restoration of Withnail & I. The film, still a cult classic and arguably one of the greatest British film comedies of the modern era, looks a treat in its newly-restored, pristine condition and went down a storm with the assorted press, influencers and more in the screening. Comment came from Arrow’s Alasdair Bayman, who said: “Where best to host the launch event for Withnail & I's brand new 4K restoration? Well, aside from Sleddale Hall in the Lakes District, myself and the Arrow team knew the Garden Cinema would be ideal, given its close proximity to the spiritual heart of the film in Camden (and technically sitting within the borough itself). Additionally, the cinema's fine array of drinks behind the bar, notably whiskey and wine, really played well into the excessive amounts of alcohol consumed by the two titular characters. To further tie into the film's iconic status amongst cinephiles, we wanted to create a specific tote bag that reflected the eye catching original poster just for the launch event. Placed on each cinema seat, they complimented the red seats of the cinema all so well, which was a real visual treat for audiences coming in. Secondly, with so many defining key quotes and moments, we thought it best to focus on some sort of book or guide to include in the totes with some fun Arrow Video releases. Ultimately, this lead us to the BFI and their Film Classics book on the film. Kevin Jackson's in-depth study of the cult classic offers such great insights into the fascinating world around the film's production so it really was ideal to include for all. We could not be happier with how the event shaped out and its reception with attendees through to some members of staff from the wider Arrow team. Thankfully it seems nobody either went on holiday or came to the cinema by mistake.”
Meanwhile, Arrow has also unveiled its slate for September, which has sparked the usual wave of interest from genre fans, horror freaks, film geeks and world cinema fans, with a range of titles that takes in the obscure to more mainstream titles. Here’s the company’s Louise Buckler on the company’s September titles. She said: “Our September new titles reveals landed on social last week and see a wide range of gems heading to the Arrow Video line later this year. First up is THE THREAT, a little-seen crime masterpiece from Arrow favourite Kinji Fukasku (Battle Royale, Battles Without Honour and Humanity.) Our release will mark the first time the film has been available outside of Japan and includes new extras by Japanese cinema experts Tom Mes and Mark Schilling. Next up, LOVE, DEATH & APOCALYPSE: THREE FILMS BY ÁLEX DE LA IGLESIA sees a trio of titles from the Spanish director make their 4K UHD debut in the UK. The set includes: ACCIÓN MUTANTE, THE DAY OF THE BEAST and PERDITA DURANGO all of which are accompanied with new audio commentaries and a death of additional extras. And finally, THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK receives a brand new 4K restoration and a fully loaded release. Our 3-disc edition includes the Theatrical and Director's Cuts of the film alongside an alternate 1.78:1 aspect ratio for the Theatrical Cut and an out of this world array of brand new and archival extras. The film will be available on separate Blu-ray and 4K UHD editions.”
September titles have also been announced by another chief boutique label, as long-standing specialist Criterion Classics has revealed the latest raft of additions to its impressive catalogue, released, as ever, via its ongoing relationship with Spirit. Commenting on the titles, Spirit’s Tracy Niland said: “Another month, another Criterion announcement – this time featuring a couple of absolute Hollywood classics and a, well, one of the darkest and disturbing comedies we’ve ever seen, but more on that one in a mo! First up we have one of the grandaddies of the Film Noir genre with Raymond Chandler and Billy Wilder adapting James M. Cain’s pulp novel Double Indemnity. With this being only Wilder’s third Hollywood he was directing, it certainly launched him into the world of the big boys and also gave us one of the most unforgettably wicked femme fatales, bought to life by Barbara Stanwyck. Coming to the UK for the first time on 4k in Dolby Vision on September 2, with new conversations and interviews, this will definitely be one to add to the collection. Then on September 9, we have another of James M. Cain adaptation getting the Criterion treatment – the inimitable Mildred Pierce. Another Film Noir with a heavy dose of maternal melodrama, Joan Crawford won her only Oscar for her portrayal of the title character who will do anything to keep her daughter – who only cares about money and class – happy; even going so far as to marry a societal playboy, who turns out to be broke and ends up costing her the restaurant empire she has built from nothing AND her daughter and almost her freedom. Brought to you in 4K HDR with documentaries, Q&As and conversations; coupled with the sumptuous food on the screen – this really will be a feast for the eyes and ears. Finally, on September 30, Todd Solondz’s Happiness comes to market on both 4k and Blu-ray for the first time in the UK. As mentioned previously watching this film can leave you feeling rather disturbed and, in some cases, wishing you could actually rinse your brain of what you have just seen. Starring the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman alongside Jon Lovitz, Lara Flynn Boyle, Jane Addams and Dylan Baker in perhaps his most despicable role, it follows several characters whose lives become intertwined whilst they each search for human connection in extremely controversial ways. Alongside new conversations and interviews, this is not one not for the faint-hearted.”
Also unveiling its September titles was Eureka, with its usual wide-ranging selection taking in its assorted sub-labels and imprints such as the Masters Of Cinema series and Eureka Classics. Here’s national accounts manager Marcus Garwood on the slate for what the company is hoping will be an Indian summer for its releases. He said: “As the nights begin to draw in this September we have got your entertainment fully covered here at Eureka. We start off with The Masters Of Cinema Series with a sumptuous ten Blu-ray disc boxed set which brings together all of Louis Feuillade's crime serials in their entirety for the first time in the UK from stunning 4K restorations. An inspiration to the works of both Fritz Lang and Alfred Hitchcock and setting the blueprint for the development of the criminal mastermind and masked vigilante characters in pulp magazines, film, television, radio and comic books; Louis Feuillade was truly an early cinematic pioneer with an undeniably pervasive influence. Today, he is best remembered for his landmark serials Fantômas, Les Vampires, Judex and Tih Minh. These four crime epics are all presented as part of this limited edition collectors box set. Disc extras include (amongst many others) uncompressed LPCM 2.0 audio on all serials, including scores by Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra and Patrick Laviosa, plus brand new interviews with film critics and historians. Eureka Classics next and a double Blu-ray disc set which brings together 1984's Taoism Drunkard and 1986's The Young Taoism Fighter. Directed by and starring Yuen Cheung-yan (The Miracle Fighters), both films are filled with imagery that is fantastical and thrilling – not least Taoism Drunkard’s banana monster – and feature some of the most jaw-droppingly inventive fight sequences in the history of martial arts cinema. Taoism Drunkard and TheYoung Taoism Fighter are cult classics from the celebrated Yuen Clan that need to be seen to be believed. Both films are presented on Blu-ray for the first time ever from brand new 2K restorations. Disc extras include brand new audio commentaries on both films by action cinema experts Mike Leeder and Arne Venema, brand new interview with director and actor Yuen Cheung-yan. The set is completed with a limited edition collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Southeast Asian horror expert Dr. Katarzyna Ancuta, and Daniel O’Brien, author of Spooky Encounters: A guide to Hong Kong Horror.”
Continuing with Eureka’s September releases and national accounts manager Marcus Garwood said: “Sports, action and comedy collide in our third release for September as we present Golden Harvest’s The Champions. Written and directed by Brandy Yuen (In the Line of Duty III) and starring Yuen Biao (Dreadnaught) The Champions central character Lee Tong (played by Biao) is a young farmer who has grown up in an isolated rural community. When an indiscretion lands him in hot water, he leaves his home in the countryside and heads for the big city – where he meets Suen (Cheung Kwok-keung, Eastern Condors), a street footballer who recognises Tong’s talent for the beautiful game and encourages him to try out for a pro team. But Tong’s first chance at footballing glory is scuppered by a rivalry with the narcissistic King (Dick Wei, Project A), who relegates the newcomer to cleaning up after his teammates. But having discovered a love for football, Tong soon accepts an offer to join a rival team – and the stage is set for a final confrontation with King on the pitch. The Champions is a sporting underdog story filtered through some of the greatest minds in the history of Hong Kong action cinema & appears on Blu-ray for the first time ever from a brand new 2K restoration. The month is rounded up by a couple of standard edition re-issue's, namely the 1929 masterpiece of early German cinema from G. W. Pabst, Pandora's Box and Orson Welles definitive 1958 Crime Noir, Touch of Evil. The Limited Edition versions on both of these titles sold out rapidly; so for those who missed out these standard edition re-issue's provide another chance to own these restored cinematic gems.”
