Dr. Alfonsina Q. (Nina) Davies Epilepsy Foundation

November 5,  2014

THE MISSION of the Dr. Alfonsina Q. Davies Epilepsy Foundation is to improve the lives of those afflicted through increased research efforts, a better treatment modality and the elimination of the stigma and prejudice that surrounds this disease in all facets of public life.
Give a Gift of Life and Health.  Please  DONATE WHAT YOU CAN  for those who are suffering and dying daily from this horrible disease.  Anyone at any age can have a seizure!!!
November is Epilepsy Month!  Wear Purple!

SUDDEN UNEXPECTED DEATH IN EPILEPSY
(SUDEP)

Unfortunately, Epilepsy is not a benign disease.  It can ultimately cause the death of the patient.  For many years it was not a topic that was openly discussed with patients, we were not aware that epilepsy could kill our daughter. About 50,000 Americans with epilepsy die every year.  Compare that with the statistics of breast cancer - 40,000 according to BreastCancer.org

For those with Epilepsy the mortality rate is 2 to 3 times  higher than those of us who do not have it. Those patients  with difficult to control epilepsy their life can be shortened by 10 years or more.

The causes are elusive, and in recent years the research efforts have been intensified. Two theories have evolved. One is that seizures cause an irregular heart, causing death.  The second is that the individual may suffocate from impaired breathing.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Did you know that you can donate in the name of a loved one? So many of us have more than we need and as we grow older we realize that trinkets are only that, trinkets. But you can make a difference in this world by donating in the name of someone you love. Send a donation as a Birthday, Easter, Christmas or Hannukah present.

Besides helping with the much needed research to help of millions of persons afflicted with several neurological disorders, you will also receive  a tax deductible receipt. WE WILL BE BOLD ABOUT IT. PLEASE DONATE NOW OR CONSIDER LEAVING A GIFT FROM YOUR ESTATE, when money no longer is something you need or care about.

Remember, a seizure can happen to anyone at any age. None of us has insurance against this devastating, misunderstood and discriminated condition.

You can make that donation through either of the two foundations that are part of the Dr. Alfonsina Q. Davies Epilepsy Foundation.  Each will allow you to make a donation as a present or in memoriam of some special persion.
Happy Birthday Nina - September 27

Dear Friends of ours invited us to a family gathering at their ranch. Nina would have been 56, but she was taken from us early.  The family prepared this memorial with 56 candles.  On the right are two of our "grandchildren", the youngest was born on Nina's Birthday. These two little precious girls have brought light and love into our lives and we are so grateful to have them call us grandpa and grandma. HUG YOUR LOVED ONES, they could be here today and gone tomorrow.
Thanks, Caesars Entertainment, Inc.

The Dr. Alfonsina Q. Davies Epilepsy Foundation gives it’s thanks to Caesars Entertainment Corporation.  They have posted signs at the entrance of any show under their control that has flashing light or loud noises.  They recognized that flashing strobe lights can trigger a seizure among those in the audience that might have epilepsy. It is a small step, but extremely important if epilepsy is to become a disease that is recognized and accepted by the public at large.

Caesars Entertainment Corporation is a Nevada based corporation that owns and operates over 50 casinos and hotels, under several brands.  Those familiar with Las Vegas will recognize the names of Bally’s, MGM Grand, Caesars Palace and other Las Vegas Strip hotels. We want to thank BRIAN MERSIS, Showroom manager at Caesar's for his help in this very worthwhile cause.
