| ANTI-APARTHEID ICON DENIS GOLDBERG CARRIES OUT "TILL JAM ACTION" AT WOOLWORTHS STORE |
The anti-apartheid icon Denis Goldberg joined youth activists in carrying out a #BoycottWoolworths “till-jam action" at the Constantia branch of Woolworths in the Western Cape. Goldberg filled his trolley with Woolworths groceries, rung the items up at the check-out till but then (due to Woolworths trade relations with Israel) refused to proceed any further or buy any product. Other tills were also simultaneously "till-jammed" bringing the store to a standstill. In August 2014 a call for the complete boycott of Woolworths until it ends its Israeli trade links was made by BDS South Africa, COSATU, ANC Youth League, MJC, SACP, YCL and various others including the National Coalition 4 Palestine (a coalition consisting of more than 30 organizations, trade unions and other groups). The #BoycottWoolworths campaign, forming a part of the BDS movement, is inspired by the anti-apartheid boycott movement of the 1980s against companies that traded with Apartheid South Africa. See below or click here for more information. |
SIMILAR "TILL-JAMS" USED IN 1980'S INTERNATIONAL ANTI-APARTHEID MOVEMENT |
Following his #BoycottWoolworths "till-jam action", Denis Goldberg commented how the tactic was similar to the efforts undertaken by himself and fellow activists in the international anti-apartheid movement during the 1980s at stores in the UK and elsewhere that stocked products from Apartheid SA.
For example, similar to Woolworths today, Tesco Stores in the UK were targeted as part of the international anti-apartheid movement's consumer boycott.
Tesco Stores were, like Woolworths, hit by "national days of action" where anti-apartheid activists, amongst other things, de-shelved, till jammed and brought the stores to a standstill. Click here for more information. |
