Volunteer Spotlight:           Angie Kim

As a 12 year old when she landed in Los Angeles from Korea, Angie Kim was looking for ways to connect to her new community.  A simple web search led her to Making Friends @ Alhambra Convalescent, a monthly L.A. Works project that was walking distance from her home.

Like many of the regular volunteers at this project, she found spending a few hours doing arts and craft projects with the senior residents a gratifying experience each month. She particularly appreciated feeling a common bond with the volunteers of all different backgrounds. MORE>>>

20th Anniversary craft Beer Garden Celebration w/ColLAboration

In a beautiful hacienda style garden setting often used for filming and special events, L.A. Works’ guests will relax and enjoy a laidback beer garden event that celebrates Los Angeles’ volunteers who make this city great!   UBS to Transform Youth Center with new Skate Park
On October 22, L.A. Works is coordinating several hundred UBS employees in service at the Vermont Youth Center. The volunteers will be building a skate park and adding some graffiti art to the grounds as well as doing projects like tile mosaics, creating a garden, and painting the boring white inside walls. We are pleased to lead this UBS team once again in service in celebration of Make a Difference Day.

Making this Holiday Season Easier
With the holiday season just around the corner, we are excited to share a few unique ways that L.A. Works supports our corporate partners with their holiday needs. In lieu of a holiday party, consider getting the team together for a different type of celebration – a volunteer experience. L.A. Works will coordinate the “party” from start to finish to keep your whole team filled with cheer (especially the HR department who can take a break from planning!). If getting out of the office isn’t what you are looking for, L.A. Works can also help organize a “drive” for clothing, gifts, school supplies, food, etc. for your company. We custom fit every opportunity to your need, so just drop us a line and we can start planning today! MORE>>>

Call to Action

Take Charge, Be a Volunteer Leader!
At every L.A. Works volunteer opportunity, volunteers are greeted by an L.A. Works Volunteer Leader who leads them in meaningful service.   October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
In October 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed. That same year marks the initiation of the first national domestic violence toll-free hotline. The activities conducted have common themes: mourning those who have died because of domestic violence, celebrating those who have survived, and connecting those who work to end violence. For volunteer projects serving individuals affected by domestic violence, check out these L.A. Works projects at Women’s Village and Alexandria House.

Get Ready for a  ShakeOut!
On Thursday, October 20th at 10:20 a.m. millions of people will participate in the 2011 Great California ShakeOut! In 2010, more than 7.9 million Californians practiced Drop, Cover, and Hold On to practice how they will protect themselves during earthquakes, and increased their overall preparedness. In the event of a disaster or emergency, L.A. Works is poised to help connect the spontaneous volunteers who want to help with the nonprofits and social services who need them the most. The main goal of the ShakeOut is to get Californians prepared for major earthquakes, so use the ShakeOut as an opportunity to learn what to do before, during, and after an earthquake. For tips on how to prepare, protect, and recover, MORE >>>

Evolving our Service Enterprise Thanks to some recent grant funding, the L.A. Works team had the opportunity to travel to Sacramento to join the CaliforniaVolunteers Service Enterprise Initiative workshop. Social enterprises are organizations that leverage volunteers fully in their core operations in an effort to better address the social missions of their organizations. At this workshop we analyzed our own volunteer profile and began to identify the ways to formalize and enhance the processes we have in place. Follow us on Twitter and/or Facebook to be the first to hear about the volunteer opportunities within L.A. Works as well as how we will be sharing our expertise with our nonprofit partner organizations.
