My good friends and great advocates, Ron Bassman and Kristina (KK) Kapp are spearheading the group, Survivors And Families Empowered (SAFE), comprised of psychiatric survivors and families who are using their lived experience to challenge a medical model of illness as the only solution – new and supposedly better drugs, while overlooking the complexity of human beings. The Psychiatric Survivors and Families of SAFE, who have experienced the abuses, misinformation, and failures of mainstream mental health services are developing an option for those who are struggling. 

 

They believe that there are a significant  number of families who would benefit from understanding that many crises can be handled with informed support.  All problems need not be a crisis requiring a referral to a medical professional.  They know that only a small number of enlightened practitioners will recommend an option other than a psychiatric drug prescription, a ticket signifying the entrance into entering a career as a mental patient.

 

Utilizing their experience of treatments and recovery, SAFE has developed a pilot project to work with caring families who have been stymied in their search for support and help.  They encourage you to look at their evolving website and help by filling out their survey so they can bring credibility and value to their pilot project at SAFE.
