ROBIN SLOAN Sourdough
Thursday, October 19 at 7 PM
Hello West Portal,
Show of hands: How many of you read and loved Robin Sloan's debut novel, Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore? I am firmly in the Loved It column. I would like to tell you that I waited patiently for Robin's sophomore novel. But I didn't. I was impatient. I was annoying. What was it, four or five years? That's too long! And every time I would see Robin I would demand a follow-up.
It is possible that I am not the ideal reader.
It is also possible that I am the reason you can now hold Robin's second novel, Sourdough, in your hands! Is it awesome? Yes, it is! What's it about? It's about sourdough bread. And soup. Don't forget the soup. It's also about technology and start-ups and the Bay Area, because Robin Sloan seems to have unique insight into how we live. If you liked Mr. Penumbra, I give very good odds on your liking Sourdough, they are clearly the product of the same idiosyncratic humor and world view. And as impatient as I was to get my hands on this book, I was completely satisfied once I did.
So, normally, I'd be pretty excited just to announce an event with Robin Sloan. He's a fantastically nice guy, and extraordinarily entertaining all on his own. But, wait, there's more! Robin is going to be joined by the hosts of the Bite Podcast. Produced by Mother Jones magazine, Bite is for "people who think hard about their food." They've always wanted to do a live recording from a bookstore, and we're so excited to welcome them!
But, wait, there's more! Our neighbors at Noe Valley Bakery are whipping up some sourdough-y goodness to share! Oh, West Portal, this is going to be a good time! There's something for everyone. Please join us tomorrow, October 19th at 7:00pm. In all seriousness, Robin Sloan is a fascinating speaker. I really anticipate a special evening, and I hope to see you there.
Very best,
Susan
