Happenings at the Inn in August

We have been busy painting the exterior of the Inn with the help of Jeanie's granddaughter Jordon, who has been a big help to us.

Bill continues to fight the fight, but it didn't stop him from shooting a 75 on the golf course a few weeks ago and winning his men's club tournament.

August is a hot month, but it is hot everywhere and St. Augustine is a great place to beat the heat and here are our best bets for doing just that:

  • It is always cooler on the water - for $35/person DEA charters will wisk you away on their 30' Maine Catamaran with a glass of champagne and fruit and cheese.
  • Take a sunset cruise on the Freedom Schooner $45/person for a two hour sailing - drinks and light refreshments included.  Afternoon departures are also available.
  • Paddle the Matanzas Bay with Eco Tours of St. Augustine or enjoy an Eco boat tour on a state-of-the-art research and rescue vessel.
  • Enjoy a secluded walk on the beaches of Anastasia State Park.
  • Get out of the heat at the Lightner Museum, where you can spend a half day visiting the unique collections of Otto Lightner.
  • The Flagler Legacy Tour at Flagler College is the most overlooked tour in town, a real must see experience.
  • Enjoy a gourmet popsicle at the Hyppo, one of the oldest cities newest establishments.
  • There is always great shopping in St. Augustine on and off St. George Street.
Recipes and Tips

Mangos are in season in the summertime so this is a great time to try out the mango raisin bread in our cookbook.  If you don't have one send us a check for $22.90, which includes shipping and we will send you one.

Mango Raisin Bread

2 cups flour

1-1/2 cups sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. salt

3 eggs, beaten

1 cup vegetable oil

1 tsp. vanilla

1 tsp. cinnamon

2 cups mango, chopped

1 cup raisins

1 cup pecans, chopped

Mix together in order given.  Stir in mango, raisins and pecans.  Pour into two loaf pans that have been greased and floured.  Bake at 350 degrees for 45-55 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Cleaning tip:  Have you ever washed your favorite shirt with an ink pen still attached (John does it all the time - he's an expert!).  The damage might be more than what you might want to deal with but try this immediate treatment:

  • Place fabric over an absorbent cloth and blot the stain with rubbing alcohol, replacing the cloth underneath as it becomes saturated with alcohol and ink.
  • Rinse well.
  • If the stain remains, blot with either acetone (except on acetates) or turpentine again replacing the cloth underneath as it becomes saturated and no more ink can be removed.
  • rinse well.
  • Next time, check your clothes first before you launder them!

New Cookbook Request:  Several of our foodie guests have asked us to put together a second cookbook that includes the best family recipes from our guests here at the Carriage Way.  It took us nearly fifteen years to put together the first cookbook, so we hope to have this one completed within a year.  The cookbook will have one recipe on a page and we would like you to provide a short story that complements the recipe.  Send us only your best and if we print your recipe, we will send you a complementary copy.

Where is Larry Now!

After visiting with friends in Oklahoma, Larry headed to New Mexico  for a few days.  After spending about a week in Vail, CO he is now in the Steamboat area of Colorado visiting his son Billy and friends.  He is being certified as a boat inspector.  Exotic mussels are taking over the lakes there and his job will be to inspect the boats before they go into Steamboat Lake.  For his superhero efforts, he will receive a free hookup for his camper.  He will be relieved of his duties for two weeks in August to teensit for some friends.  Now that sounds scarier than exotic mussels!  Please pray for his survival.
