Summer pruning: Fruit trees
August is the best time to prune fruit trees that are trained into fans, cordons & espaliers. Make the cut above the third leaf from the start of new growth to encourage fruiting buds to form & keep the trained shape. The cut should slant away from the nearest leaf or leaf bud to allow rain to run off, helping to prevent rotting & die-back.

Great for mixed hedges
Spindleberry is a fast growing shrub. Attractive in autumn when the leaves turn bright red & contrast with the pink 4-lobed fruits, which split partially open & reveal bright orange seeds. Best grown in mixed wildlife hedges & thrives on chalky soil. Buy cell grown Spindleberry »
