Hello Firstname

Wednesday, 3 August
Next Wednesday, 27 July, we will have the WCPF Travelling Print Exhibition 2015 - 2016
The Travelling Print Exhibition is made up of prints have been chosen from those high scoring prints selected for inclusion in the 2015 WCPF Members Exhibition but that did not quite make it into the final selection for hanging at the exhibition venue. There is only room to display around 150 prints in the Medieval Hall at Buckfast Abbey where the exhibition is on show this year. The remaining selected prints are circulated to many of the WCPF clubs so that these excellent, high scoring prints can be enjoyed and appreciated by their members.

Photography Course - Discount To BPS Members
This year we have decided that it is only fair that BPS Members get a discount if they sign up for the forthcoming Photography Course, instead of the full fee of £150, it is being offered to members at the knock down price of £125. Applications for the course now open, full details on the Society website website.

Facebook - A Plea To Members
Many members are on Facebook which is a fantastic medium for broadcasting news. It would be great if all members with a Facebook account could add the Photography Course flyer to their Facebook page and then "share" it with all of their Facebook friends. To download the flyer, please click here.

BPS 2016-2017 Programme
Derwood has been working like a true BPS Trojan over the last year or so to put together the programme for the forthcoming year (2016-2017). The fruits of his labours, the full programme for the year, can now be seen on the Society's website - please follow this link to see what joys await.

Things to Photograph & Exhibitions to Visit
It's short notice, but Gerry Knight tells me that there is a really wonderful exhibition at the Grant Bradley Gallery in Bedminster. The exhibition, called Ferus, is the 3rd Year Students from Falmouth University's Marine & Natural History Photography course final degree show. The exhibition is on until Saturday (30 July), so hurry or you'll miss it. For full details, follow this link.

North Somerset Bird of Prey Centre are having an open day on Sunday 31 July. Full details here.

Smile - an exhibition by photographer Dave Mason which is being held at the Greenwich Gallery in London, until 2 August - www.thegreenwichgallerey.com

Bristol Water Plc Lakes
We have received the following from Bristol Water Plc which is self-explanatory. If you think that their proposal would be of interest to you, please let me know and I (or Carol) will reply directly to them to let them know the strength of the response.

My name is John Harris and I am the Recreations and Fisheries Officer for Bristol Water works. I am responsible for all recreational activities that go on/around our lakes. This includes Chew Valley Lake, Blagdon Lake, Litton and Barrow tanks.

Currently, fishing boats on both Chew Valley and Blagdon lakes are only available for hire by anglers. We are contemplating the idea of hiring our boats out to other users, members of artist and photography groups in particular. I am just dropping you an email to get a rough idea of the interest in this idea.

As I’m sure you can appreciate, our lakes offer some great opportunities for photographers and artists alike. Being situated in such a wonderful part of the country we have an abundance of birds and other wildlife that make the lakes their home as well as some fantastic scenery to admire. Otters, ospreys, bitterns and other unusual birds and wildlife are often seen around the shores of our lakes and being able to watch or see them from a boat can be an amazing experience.

As previously mentioned, this is very much an idea for the time being. If we were to permit this we would be looking at allocating a set amount of boats each day for uses other than fishing. The boats would be available to hire during certain hours of the day and would be at a heavily reduced rate. Initial costs for hire of a boat for photography/painting would be in the region of £25.00. This would permit a maximum of two people to take a boat for a period of up to 4 hours.  Initial thoughts are that you would need to be registered to an approved photography/artist group to be permitted to use the boats.

There are some issues around this proposal and it will take some time to iron these out but I thought it appropriate to contact you now to see if there was any significant interest.

Please feel free to get in contact with your thoughts,

Regards,

John Harris

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
I have received the following from BPS expat, Neil McCoubrey. I was going to edit it to put into Howellesque prose but decided to quote it verbatim and show Neil's true excitement better than I ever could:

Whoopee! I have been accepted by Napier University to do a “Masters degree by Research” starting in September. My research topic will be:
“A photographic exploration of marginal structures in remote landscapes”
For me a lovely piece of serendipity is that I first graduated from Napier exactly 40 years ago. I am really looking forward to repeating the wonderfully positive experience I had all those years ago.
Am I happy? Wow! Of course I am.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
