Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
UNCREATED
In the Athanasian Creed we confess this about our God: "... the Godhead of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit is one: the glory equal, the majesty coeternal. Such as the Father is, such is the Son, and such is the Holy Spirit: the Father uncreated, the Son uncreated, the Holy Spirit uncreated ..."
The Bible tells us that God created the heavens and the earth. But who created God? Who was before Him? Who made the Maker? The answer is: nobody. God was "in the beginning" -- and before the beginning -- and even before that. When God said to Moses (Exodus 3:14), "I AM WHO I AM," He revealed to us that nobody created Him. He always is and always has been.
A created thing is always lesser than the one who creates it. So since God is "uncreated" it means that there is nobody above Him. He is in debt to none. Nobody rules over Him. Nobody has authority over Him.
That's good news for us. It means that when God gives us His word, nobody can gainsay it. If He says it, it is absolute truth. That's really important when it comes to the forgiveness of our sins, isn't it? When Jesus told the paralytic who had come through the roof, "Your sins are forgiven," the teachers of the law complained, "Who can forgive sins but God alone?" (Mark 2:5-7). They were right that only God can forgive sins, but they missed the fact that the one imparting forgiveness was God, the Son of the same essence as the Father.
Now when you hear Jesus say, "Your sins are forgiven," you can believe it with all your heart!
