Next Wednesday we have a double bill of Pam & Eddy Lane who will be presenting their talk Arctica.
Pam and Eddy will bring us the best moments from their multiple Expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic over the last few years, including the Wildlife, History, Landscape and Environment of these Polar Regions. As well as Award Winning photographs, it includes Audio Visual and Video sequences that bring their experiences of these iconic regions to life. DI Group - Practical Evening |
Last Monday was the second practical bi-monthly meeting with the clubroom nearly packed full to see the live demos of macro photography. Mike Hall set up his motorised equipment which stepped the camera forward in small increments. The software controlled the movement as well as triggered the camera to capture a small slice of the object in focus, taking into account various camera settings and sensor size. For the demo the 35 images of a small seed generated were combined in focus stacking software Zerene Stacker to produce the final image of the whole object in perfect focus. An example of the stunning beauty of small natural objects such as a seed head is shown below.
Mike purchased his equipment during the pandemic to keep him busy but since then the camera manufacturers in the never-ending race to offer new features caught up with providing ultra close up macro facility comparable to the above equipment built into the camera including focus stacking. Steve Taylor brought his Olympus camera to demonstrate its capability, photographing a group of seashells spread out over 15cm on the table, all in perfect focus from front to back. Both systems are capable of operating outdoors.

The next practical meeting is on 10 March in the clubroom. It would be of great help to know what members would like to know more about, and I would welcome suggestions to plan ahead. The options range from software editing sessions either as demos or hands-on workshops with your own laptops and preferred software. Alternatively there is option to do practical sessions to shoot images using your equipment. All suggestions are welcome as well as those who can volunteer to do demos of whatever they enjoy doing and are familiar with.

Thank you to everyone that came to the first session on Monday - it was a great start to this new group.
Next Monday, 20 Jan, 10am - 1pm, we shall be looking at creating lay-flat abstract images. Several members will be bringing light boxes, bits of paper, gels, pressed flowers etc. Come along; bring your cameras, tripod, close up lenses and any accessories you feel like and let's see what people can create.
The following week (27 Jan) we have a fabulous model, Tegan Elizabeth, sitting for us. The morning session will be for people who regularly attend - no booking required, just a nominal fee.
There will be an extra paid session in the afternoon for a limited number of attendees. Contact Mike to book a place.

Bristol Salon 2025
Closing - 31 January
3 PDI Sections:
Open Colour, Monochrome, Nature
3 Print Sections:
Open Colour, Monochrome, Nature
Entry is free to BPS members*
* Not available to distance members, temporary members or photography course members.

Time is running out to enter the 2025 Bristol Salon - and only 10 members (at the last count) have entered this prestigious exhibition. It is open to ALL members and is your chance to have a go at one of the most important international photographic exhibitions in the UK - so come on, let's see a massive entry from BPS members this year - and don't forget that it's FREE. So, there are no excuses for not having a go!
Entrants may submit up to 12 projected images and 12 prints across the three sections (Open, Monochrome & Nature) in each category. These will be put before a panel of selectors who will pick the top 25% or so to be accepted. Entry for BPS members is free*.
PRINTS
For those entering prints these will be returned via Unit 13.
When entering your prints you have the choice of
- Hold
for collection
- Return
by mail
- Forward
to the Midland Salon (at no cost)
- Destroy
If you are not forwarding prints to the Midland, then please mark your choice as ‘Hold for Collection’. We can see this on the label attached to your print, and it makes them more easily identifiable.
If you mark them as Destroy, although we will look out for BPS prints there is always a chance they will be missed, and you will not get your prints back.
This is your chance to dip your toes in the murky world of international exhibitions without having to open your wallets! So, come on, get off your BTMs and let's see a load of BPS entries. In the meantime if you have any queries, feel free to email Ralph at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk
The closing date is 31 January.
For those of you who aren't too sure what the Bristol Salon is: it is an international photographic exhibition that has been running since 1947 and is the largest exhibition of its type in the UK attracting entries from across the world.
