Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 2 March

Next Wednesday we welcome Leigh Preston FRPS EFIAP MPAGB to BPS when he will be presenting his talk Forty Years' Worth - A Retrospective.

The idea of 40 years' worth is to show just that, pictures from right back to where I started in club photography to the present day. They represent a rather broad collection, although some parts of the talk are linked and thematic, much is stand alone images.
I've scanned some of my darkroom prints - those chemically fumed days before digital, many of which are about an era, aligned somewhat heavily to Northern Towns and Urban landscapes, and rather gritty in feel (a bit like me nowadays!). Other pictures reflect my enjoyment of travelling, so they have been gathered from many places dotted around the globe (I've not collected as many air-miles as John C , who I've always regarded as a sort of David Attenborough of photography) from Australia to North America, from Georgia to India, from Greenland to Nepal and luckily for some Stockport (that well known suburb of Manchester where you have to buy a train ticket to get through the underpass under the station, where the recent boundary changes mean part of it is now officially in Portugal!). I intend to add a vaguely sardonic commentary throughout the evening, but avoid anything technical and for some there will be a disappointing lack of 'winners', for which I apologise in advance (you know that sort of impact highly creative and clever stuff that young Barry does!). I have put a couple in that I recall Jim Marsden liked as a sort of tribute to him. All in all I am really honoured to be asked back it's been a while due to this wretched virus thing, two years in which I've been struggling to make still life images which does not come easily to someone who likes climbing Scottish Mountains!

Studio/Portrait Photography - Familiarisation Sessions
As you may know Mike Martin currently hosts the Photographers with Disabilities group within the Clubrooms on a Monday (11am – 2pm).  As he’s already in in town, he’s proposing follow on sessions for BPS members in the afternoons.

These will be:
  • Open to all members who are NEW to portrait photography or un-accustomed to working in a studio space
  • Max 12 members - 4 members per session, split into 3 groups (A, B, C)
  • Each Group to have one session per month for March, April & May
  • All sessions:  Monday 2:30pm – 4.00pm

Session 1 – Lecture / Demo
Cover the equipment (lights, triggers, studio lights, modifiers, reflectors, backgrounds, etc), metering, light patterns, etc. Ensure everyone is OK using their own camera to trigger the lights.

Session 2 – Hands on practical shooting
Attendees photograph each other in different lighting set ups. One light/two lights/additional lights.  Using one light to serve multiple purposes. etc.

Session 3 – Hands on practical shooting
Build on session 2 – including how to direct models or each other.

The purpose of the above is to:
  • Encourage more people to have a go at portrait photography
  • Give you the confidence in the basics so you may consider organising you own hire of the studio space (with Mike supporting you on a 1-2-1 basis if required, first hire would be supervised anyway)

Register Interest
To get involved please drop Mike an eMail at mike_martin@blueyounder.co.uk with your preference for group (given the dates each group will meet). I have deliberately avoided Bank Holiday Mondays.

Bristol Salon 2022 - Return of Members' Prints
Just to expand on my announcement at last Wednesday's meeting about the return of prints.

I will return all prints entered into the Salon by BPS Members, unless they asked for them to be forwarded to the Midland Salon.  They will be available at Unit 13 next Wednesday.  Any not collected will be available from Wex from next Thursday pm onwards.

If you did ask for them to be forwarded, but would now like them returned, then please let me know asap.  You may want them returned as you have changed your mind, you want to rework them, or for any other reason.

I am hoping to surface mount the majority (possibly all) of the awarded salon prints and put them on display at Unit 13 from next Wednesday.  I will include in this the awarded prints from BPS Members.  If you would prefer your awarded prints to be returned and not put on display, then again let me know asap.

Some time later this year, probably in May, I will be forwarding entrants' prints to the Midland Salon. If anyone is thinking of entering the Midland Salon then I can include your prints and save you the postage. However, I do not want to receive your prints at the moment, I will let you know when you can give them to me.

That’s it, as always if you have any questions or comments then email me at
Ralph

Trumpet Bowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue

Items For Sale
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!

DO NOT REPLY TO THE NEWSLETTER.
