The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and
Modoc County have restarted planning to build a
massive 3-mile long, 8-10 foot high security fence
surrounding the Tulelake airfield that occupies most
of the Tule Lake concentration camp site.
They say a fence is necessary to protect the
Tulelake airfield from wildlife strikes, but,
according to the FAA, 98% of collisions are with
avian wildlife. The proposed fence would do nothing
to prevent bird strikes.
The FAA has given us
a very tight April 1, 2024 deadline
for public comment on how to mitigate the harm of
their proposed fence on the concentration camp site
-- a place where more than 27,000 Japanese Americans
were imprisoned during WWII and where 331 men, women
and children died.
It is URGENT and
IMPORTANT that individuals and organizations respond
to this FAA deadline for public comment.
Please write to the FAA and Modoc County and
tell them the only way to mitigate damage to the
concentration camp site is by NOT building the
fence. Ask for a feasibility study that will examine
moving an airfield, an inherently destructive and
incompatible use for a historically significant
concentration camp site that cannot be moved. For
more background visit the
Tule Lake
Committee website.
We have only a few
more days to respond to this renewed existential
threat to the Tule Lake site. Email your comment to
Mitch Crosby, Modoc County Roads Commissioner,
and tell the FAA and Modoc County that operating an
airfield in the middle of a concentration camp site
is an unacceptable choice. Please add the Tule Lake
Committee to the cc:

THANK YOU from
the Tule Lake Committee!
