CONCERT FOR HOPE

Grammy-nominated Haitian music group Boukman Eksperyans kicks off DrumTalk2010 with a concert for “HOPE” honoring their native country, Haiti, which suffered a fatally devastating earthquake at the beginning of the year 2010. As an ode to those who have perished in this earthquake, Boukman Eksperyans brings us an exciting concert filled with Caribbean beats, reggae music and traditional music that will cast a spell and make you dance

Topping off this World Music evening, Brazilian drummer Marcus Santos, along with his friends Bloco AfroBrazil and Pittsburgh’s best Salsa dancers, will take you to Rio de Janeiro’s renowned Carnival in the city of Pittsburgh. Jim Donovan, bridges the gap between the Latin influence and other international music lovers, with his band the Ecstatic, backed up by Mary Miller’s Dance Company, with some live favorites in World Music! Also expect a mesmerizing and exciting performance by Japanese Taiko drummer Takumi Kato.

Let’s take an exploration on the Congo River in Africa with the Kongo Female Drummers and Wacongo Dance Company as our tour guide. Followed by a live Soukous music performance, this excursion brings you the finest selection of Congolese music ranging from traditional, aborigine rhythms and ancestral drumming that will take you to the mother-land right from your seat. Raquy and the Cavemen open another gateway with their Middle Eastern traditional and contemporary drumming. HISTORY:
DrumTalk originated in 2004 as “Talking Drums,” an event to created to bring African master drummers residing in the Tri-State region together for a performance. It has since become a full-scale Rhythm Festival lasting four days in which percussionists representing music traditions from all over the globe teach and perform. The mission of DrumTalk is to present a unifying musical and educational experience for everyone regardless of their musical experience.

Afrika Yetu is an artistic and educational resource based in Pittsburgh, PA. We present programs designed to bring together diverse audiences. Other programs include the annual African Music Series, bringing artists Africans love to Pittsburgh and other U.S. cities, Citywide Kwanzaa Celebration, and World AIDS Awareness Day. All Afrika Yetu programs are created to enhance Americans’ understanding and acceptance of Africans in their community.
