Next Wednesday, 19 December, is the highlight of the Bristol social calendar - the annual BPS Christmas social. The Membership Secretary has asked me to publish the following words:
It's that time of year again, when the great and the good convene for chat, food and (probably) a drink or two. No doubt all the 'old hands' will be there, but, if previous years are anything to go by, very few of the newer members will join us.
|
|
It does give people a chance to chat for more than the few minutes during the Wednesday coffee breaks, or at the end of a meeting, when the designated 'locker-up' is pointedly looking at the clock. It's also quite good if you want to pick someone's brains or just have a good old gossip.
Why not come along? You may enjoy it and all it will cost you is a single plate of food or the equivalent in nibbles, biscuits etc or drink. Everything is shared, so there's no need to bring a turkey and all the trimmings or a case of champagne.
I promise not to make everyone wear their badges, so do come along if you can.

Many thanks to all responded to my plea for help in sorting out the projector problem earlier this week. You will be pleased to learn that the problem has now been resolved, so a big thanks go to all who offered help, especially Allan Jones who identified the problem as being "right cable in wrong hole"! Hopefully colours should look right when we get back to using the projector in the New Year. |
Studio Group update - The Beginners' studio sessions have been going well and have included some of the newer members, feedback has been that it is a big jump to then hiring the studio and arranging their own shoots and so in 2019 as well as continuing the Beginners' sessions, opportunities will be offered to help those who have a basic understanding of the studio to develop their skills and techniques. Nick has asked those with a specific project in mind to contact him via email: nick@acuma.tv, he will then arrange small group sessions for members.

With Christmas on the horizon, or even closer, Ken Clarke as PI Competitions Secretary thought it worth reminding everyone that the prescribed theme for Round 4 of the PI competition due in in February is - CHRISTMAS! So make the most of the opportunities you have. The theme for the third round is a song title, that might be worth a little thought.

The WCPF organises several competitions, some for club entries, others for individuals to enter.
Entries from BPS as a club (DPIC and Kingswood Salver) are coordinated by Pete McCloskey.
For individuals we have
Knightshayes Trophy
This is judged by the President who selects a set subject.
This year it is GOLD. Individuals may enter 2 prints.
There is NO entry fee.
Closing date is 10 Feb (which is also the date of the DPIC so prints can be delivered by any BPS members attending DPIC).
Results are announced at the Council Meeting on 9 March. (Beryl and I attend this meeting and will bring back any entries from BPS).
There is little or no information on the WCPF website about this
competition.
Members Exhibition (MEX)
This comprises 3 print classes (Open, Mono, Nature) and 4 PDI classes (Open, Nature, Creative, Photo Travel).
There is an entry fee.
Closing date is Monday 4 March. I am checking to see if prints can still be delivered at the Council Meeting on 9 March.
There is further information on the WCPF Website.
AV (Audio Visual)
Closing date is 10 Feb (DPIC).
There are full details on the WCPF Website.

Thinking of Updating Your Camera? |
If you are thinking of updating your camera kit and getting rid of the old stuff, the following might be of interest:
Hi there,
I hope my email finds you well. My name is Isabella Silver and I am an assistant producer on an upcoming BBC history documentary about the 1890s. I am hoping you can help me with an enquiry.
As part of our programme we will be exploring the technology of photography in the 1890s, and we are looking for a working camera from this period. Would any of your members be able to help us at all? If so, it would be great to hear from you!
Thank you and I look forward to your response.
All the best,
Isabella

Members are reminded that the closing date for entry to the 2019 Bristol Salon is only a few weeks away. Entry for BPS members is free as long as we
receive your entry before 19 January, after that you will have to pay the
full fee.
To help you with your entry there is a small tutorial that can be
downloaded by following this link.
When entering, be sure to tick the box on the first page of the entry
system to say that you are a BPS member and fill in your BPS membership
number which you will find at the top of this newsletter; when you get to
the payment page at the end, click ALREADY PAID or you'll have the BPS debt collectors at your door! Here's hoping that we see a rush of entries, but in the meantime if you
have any queries, feel free to email me at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk Full details can found on the BPS website All the best Pete Howell & the Salon Team

ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP.
|
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
Please note, we can only carry adverts for items to sell if those items actually belong to the member advertising them.
If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address. |
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.
|
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list.
|
Please don't forget that if you change your
address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it
would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that
she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue
to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk
The distinctions we have on record are those
shown at the top of this newsletter, if they are wrong, please let Carol
know.
|
|
If you have anything you think other members would like to know about, such as special events, exhibitions, photographic hints and tricks, etc. please let me know at bpsnewsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk
PLEASE NOTE: ALL COPY TO BE WITH THE EDITOR BY MIDNIGHT THURSDAY TO ALLOW FOR PUBLICATION (HOPEFULLY) ON FRIDAY MORNING.
