1. Wanted: Classically trained violinist/pianist
Atlantica is looking for a classically trained violinist/pianist that is capable of playing charts, but is also a virtuoso in improvisation of classical and all modern styles, such as jazz, rock and country. The position includes teaching students from beginner to advanced and recording sessions with a variety of artists. Ability to be fluent in both instruments is a must. 2. CD Release for Chris Boudreau
Chris Boudreau releases Debut CD
3 City Maritime release tour set for Sept – Oct 2010
The release of Moncton N.B.-based rocking, singer-songwriter Chris Boudreau’s Debut CD has arrived. This finely crafted collection of songs were all written by Chris with one co-write credit going to long-time musical co-conspirator Todd Geldart while one other was co-written with Emmy-award winning songwriter Terry Tompkins. This self-produced, self-engineered album was recorded at Todd Geldart’s True Sound Studios in Hillsborough N.B. using only analog recording equipment. Legendary Engineer-Producer Jim DeVito (Don Henley, Creed, Tom Petty) mixed the album and was assisted by Billy Chapin (Boyz2Men, Britney Spears).
From the beautiful cover photos to the heartfelt lyrics to the warm musical rhythms, this album speaks directly from the heart of the songwriter. All of Chris’s experience in life and music come together for a very rich musical experience. Darkness and light, despair and hope, strength and weakness are all touched upon in this album, and the songs range from simple acoustic guitar/harmonica arrangements to richly layered pop/rock songs.
This album release will be supported by a 3-city Maritime tour with a very high-end show. Chris’s backing band for this tour is made up of Chris Melanson - Drums, Robin Ettles - Bass, Terry Hume - Keys, David Slaunwhite - BG vocals/guitar, and Kathy Colpitts - BG Vocals. The dates for the tour are Sep 30 @ iRock Fredericton, Oct 7 @ Old Cosmo Moncton, and Oct 14 @ Durty Nellies Halifax.

3. From Becka deHaan, My First Covenant Award Nomination!

It hasn't taken me long in the industry to realize that the biz is a lot like catching public transportation: from eight-hour layovers,to sprints to a bus, opportunities come when they come, and go when they go. You can miss the 12:30 ferry, or the 9:23 train can cancel. Furthermore--and such is my story--you can rush to the bus stop for the 3:15 that doesn't end up coming for another twenty minutes, or the three-hour delay predicted by the airline is only two...
After graduating from university in 2006, with my Grade 10 Royal Conservatory piano certificate to boot, I was eager to get the gigs and be working on a cd. Said cd took four years to come out, pertenantly entitled, "Wait for the Wind."

Having released it independently, I took on the realistic mind-frame, thinking that my high-school dream of being named among artists to whom I look up, such as Carolyn Arends and Jacob Moon, would,if at all, not come true for another three to five years--at least not until I either released a second project and/or was picked up by an agent...

Now, at exactly the half-year mark of the release of this debut album, I am thrilled to announce that the record has been nominated for a 2010 Covenant Award, for Inspirational Album of the Year, with the Gospel Music Association of Canada. In other words, the album that came out four years "behind schedule" is now listed among those of my role models some three years sooner than expected. I hoep that my story can be of some encouragement to those of you reading this newsletter: Enjoy a good book (or your ipod:) during your layover, but still listen for that whistle blowin'!

4. Kathleen Gorey-McSorley selected to showcase at "Contact East"
Kathleen Gorey-McSorley will be off to Antigonish this week.  She was selected to showcase at "Contact East".  Her showcase will be at the Millennium Center, Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010 at 7:00 pm.

5. Owen Steel 'et al' & Doug Macnearney Tour Dates
In typical Owen Steel fashion, I would like to let folks know, late and hastily, of an upcoming musical jaunt myself, alongside Mike 'Mumble' Humble, Doug Macnearney, and Sarah Osborne, will be doing in the upcoming weeks!

Beginning at Harvest Jazz and Blues in Fredericton, New Brunswick, making it's way around parts of the Maritimes, sling shotting into Ontario and Quebec, and then hopefully coasting back in neutral to our home on the east coast, the 'Septober Tour' will see us play various shows in the strang/jug/roots/groove vein, serve as an experiment in time travel, and will run about as long as this sentence!

Doug Macnearney will be opening all the shows with his trusty voice and banjo, and then joining Mumble, Sarah and I as part of 'Owen Steel et al' (to those in the know, otherwise called 'Snacks'). We will be traveling via the simple luxuries of a toyota tercel named 'the black turkey', with half our belongings literally tied down to the roof. We are sharing bills with various others, potentially looking for places to sleep, people to talk with, to share drinks with, to celebrate a new season with.. most of all, just to be with.

 Band prepares for trip to New York City for studio time where icons Paul McCartney, Mariah Carey have recorded, wins Galaxie Award at the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival

Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada – “It was the best day of our lives,” explains Andy Brown of his band’s double-whammy win of the North American-wide Acoustic Test Drive 2010 competition and the Galaxie Rising Staown.
As a finalist in Acoustic Test Drive, a contest hosted by Taylor Guitars, Sonicbids.com and Elixir Strings® to support emerging artists, Brown was tasked with making a music video that included a performance with their new Taylor 300 or 400 Series model and Elixir strings and cables, prizes from the competition for making it to the finals. Brown’s video for his song “Happiness” whimsically depicts his initial meeting and subsequent courtship with a Taylor guitar.
Selected by popular vote, Brown received the news when he was up for another award at the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival, held in his home town of Fredericton, on September 17. “We had actually just performed [at the festival], and I had received calls from both Taylor Guitars and Sonicbids, which I missed as I was on stage,” Brown shared. “Less than 10 minutes after I found out we had won ‘Acoustic Test Drive,’ I also found out we had won the ‘Rising Star’ competition at the festival. I wish every 10 minutes could be that good!” Brown performed ‘Happiness’ on-stage for the Galaxie competition.
As the Grand Prize winner, Brown will receive a selection of free gear from Taylor and Elixir, as well as session time at New York City’s Tainted Blue Studios, where icons Paul McCartney and Mariah Carey have recorded, to record with his new gear. Winning the competitions, he says, means a lot. “It’s so gratifying to receive recognition of the music we make and believe in so much. Being able to say we won a competition presented by Taylor Guitars and Elixir Strings is going to open up a lot of opportunities for us, especially in new markets. Winning the Galaxie Rising Star award is wonderful as well as it’s such a well-recognized award in Canada.” Performing at the internationally-renowned Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival was a dream come true for Brown and his band. “We’re thrilled to have played at a main stage at Harvest.”
Brown is also nominated for three Music New Brunswick Awards:

1. Debut Atlantic Seeks New Executive Director

Debut Atlantic seeks an experienced, ambitious, talented and self-motivated leader to fulfil its mandate of promoting classical music in the Atlantic Region. You’ll take the lead in identifying and mentoring emerging Canadian artists and making them available to Atlantic Canadian presenters and their audiences, and to music educators, to excite and inspire their students.
Reporting to a Board of Directors representing the four provinces and Debut Alumni, you will oversee the work of an administrative officer and have full responsibility for the planning and execution of Debut’s programs. You will develop productive relationships with the many stakeholders of the organization - funders and supporters in both the public and private sectors, and colleagues in like minded organizations.
You will ensure that Debut continues to be relevant and highly respected for the quality of the performers and the support provided to presenters and educators to attract and delight audiences.
You will be expected to use modern computer and social networking tools and to be able to deal professionally with a wide variety of personalities to get the work accomplished. You should be well organized and enjoy being a detail minded multi-tasker.
We’d like to hear from applicants who are building a career in arts administration and who have at least 5-7 years of relevant experience and education.

Executive Director Position Description
Debut Atlantic has been in existence for over 30 years with a specific mandate to help ensure that classical music thrives in Atlantic Canada. It achieves this ambitious goal by providing emerging Canadian classical artists with an opportunity to perform to a wide range of audiences and be mentored in this region as part of their professional career development. In addition, Debut touring artists are available to offer their knowledge and experience to music students of all ages and levels of ability throughout Atlantic Canadian schools and universities while on their performance tours.
Debut accepts applications from artists to participate in Debut’s five yearly tours and through a rigorous selection process led by its Artistic Selection Committee, selects performers who are then made available to Atlantic Canadian Presenters. These presenters are locally based organizations who provide classical music and music education opportunities in their communities. Many of them are well established clients of Debut, with a particularly strong presence in Nova Scotia. On average there are 8-10 performance/teaching venues in the region per tour. A major initiative is underway that could expand Debut’s ability to reach new audiences, strengthen music education and continue to ensure the future viability of the genre through audience development. Debut’s Education Committee has convened an Advisory Committee of music educators from across the Atlantic Region. The goal is to expand Debut’s education and audience building capacity through a major enhancement of its website’s design and content.
With an annual budget of $300,000 (comprising largely of Canada Council and provincial government funding), Debut is a small organization with a specific mandate. It relies on sponsoring organizations for gifts in kind such as hotel rooms, car rentals, advertising, so that it can keep costs to presenters at a minimum. On average, a tour will cost a presenter less than $2000 per concert, helping them to minimize their financial exposure in presenting these concerts and thus increasing the availability of classical music performances throughout the region.
Each year, Debut offers an annual Award for Musical Excellence, which consists of a $1,000 cash prize (as well as a performance opportunity) to an outstanding Atlantic Canadian high school music student, as selected by one of its esteemed Alumni.
The Board of Directors consists of 9 community members from across the region, an Honourary Solicitor and the Executive Director (ED). Three of the Board members are Debut Atlantic Alumni. The Board meets four times/years - in person twice a year (June – AGM, and November – Strategic Planning) and two via conference call (Sept and March). The board committees are executive, finance, artistic and governance/nominating. The Executive Director serves as Secretary to the Board and attends all committee meetings. The Chair of the Board in 2010 is Bertis Sutton of Grand Bay-Westfield, NB.
The Executive Director
The Executive Director provides overall leadership and direction to the organization and works closely with the board, presenters, sponsors, government funders and other like minded “cultural” organizations in the region to promote the organization and its mandate, and to help maintain Debut’s position as one of the most respected and relevant classical music organizations within Atlantic Canada and across the country. Indeed, the Executive Director is “the public face” of Debut in the region.
The focus of the Board and Executive Director is to expand classical music offerings to ever wider audiences in the region – by seeking out potential presenters/partners and encouraging them to purchase Debut concerts. As well, the Board has endorsed an initiative to expand the education mandate of Debut to include not only in-person school visits but also to enhance the Debut website by including education tools, concerts, and interaction with artists and student audiences. Work on this is underway.
The Executive Director is expected to have an active presence throughout the region in appropriate cultural forums, with presenters and presenter groups, and to maintain strong relations with funders and sponsors. The Canada Council has been, and continues to be, the major funder of Debut and hence the ED must develop and maintain a relationship with them that ensures their continued – and where possible – enhanced support of Debut. The Executive Director must prepare the grant applications and regular reports, and be continually up to date on any changes to the CC mandate and its implications for Debut.
The governments of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador and New Brunswick also financially support Debut. In Nova Scotia, this support is provided through grants from the Cultural Affairs Division and Dept of Education. The ED must ensure that the relevant officials are invited to events, that reports are submitted in a timely manner and that Debut remains relevant to their program requirements. Corporate support is mainly provided through gifts in kind, although there will in increasing need, as Debut’s mandate expands, to solicit direct financial support as well.
The Board represents the Atlantic Region and is active in executing Debut’s mandate. Collectively and through board committees, they advocate for government and corporate support, develop new Presenters, identify up and coming artists and select those who will tour with Debut. The Executive Director actively supports Board committees and interacts regularly with Board members between board meetings.
The Executive Director supervises an Administrative Officer and usually a summer student working on a specific project. The Admin Officer position was created in 2010 to assist the Executive Director in the execution of the organization’s mandate, providing administrative, technical and communication support to Debut. This position is responsible for website design and maintenance, keeping Debut’s financial accounts up to date, assisting in the organization of Debut’s five tours, and some touring with performing artists as needed. The Admin Officer assists in the processing of touring applications from artists and maintaining excellent stakeholder relations.
Executive Director Position Requirements
Knowledge and Experience
  1. Familiarity with and keen appreciation of classical music;
  2. Has held a leadership position in at least one organization where he/she had some responsibility for planning and executing programs, including financial management, relationship management with key stakeholders and ensuring that the organization delivered a high quality result;
  3. Experience working with senior level volunteers, such as a Board of Directors, and with modern Board and organizational governance principles;
  4. Experience with “friend and fund” raising – successful grant writing, solicitation of corporate/public sector funding, development of supporters and partnerships;
  5. Familiarity with current communication and administrative computer and web based tools and venues.
 Personal Qualities
  1. As this is a small organization, the ED must be both hands on to deal with immediate needs and future thinking, seeking opportunities for appropriate expansion and enhancements;
  2. Must be collaborative to work with the various stakeholders of Debut, including staff, board, funders, presenters, colleagues in other related organizations, etc.;
  3. Must be a self-starter, capable of working with limited supervision and within agreed upon Board-Executive Director requirements;
  4. Effective communicator (both one-on-one; in writing; presentations);
  5. As a steward of a valued long standing not for profit organization, and of public and corporate funds, he/she must behave in an ethical, accountable and transparent manner;
  6. Lots of energy, ideas, creative, with a positive “can do” attitude; comfortable with travel within the Region.

3. Building Communities through Arts and Heritage (BCAH) Program - Développement des communautés par le biais des arts et du patrimoine (DCAP)

This message is to let you know the next deadline date to apply to the BCAH Program is September 30, 2010.

The BCAH Program has 3 different components:
1. Local Festivals
The Local Festivals component provides funding to local groups for recurring festivals that present the work of local artists, artisans, or historical performers. The September 30, 2010 deadline date is for festivals / events taking place between April 1 and August 31, 2011.

2. Community Anniversaries
The Community Anniversaries component provides funding to local groups for non-recurring local events and capital projects that commemorate an anniversary of 100 years or greater. The September 30, 2010 deadline date is for events starting between April 1 and December 31, 2011.

3.  Legacy Fund
The Legacy Fund provides funding for community capital projects that commemorate a local historical anniversary of 100 years or greater. The September 30, 2010 deadline date is for capital projects that will be completed before March 31, 2012.

Auditions will take place in front of a panel consisting of SNB's Music Director and orchestra's Principal String Players.

Successful applicants will become contracted per-service members of the orchestra, covered by the Collective Agreement between Symphony New Brunswick Inc. and Local 815 of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) of the United States and Canada. All contracted Members must be in good standing with Local 815 AFM.

Artist Travel Grants New for 2011

(Charlottetown, PE) – Award and showcase submissions for 2011 East Coast Music Week being held in Charlottetown, PEI April 13-17, are now open.  The East Music Association (ECMA) is thrilled to once again be continuing its partnership with Sonicbids this year. Submissions can be made through www.ecma.com. Deadline for all submissions is Friday, October 1, 2010.

The 2011 event will see the return of the following Showcase stages: Discovery Stage,Bluebird North Showcase, Rising Star,Rock Stage, Roots Room, Soundwaves, Songwriters Circle, and the International Export Buyers Showcase.

The ECMA is also accepting submissions for awards in Music (30), Industry (17) and Honourary (5).  East Coast artists who have released recordings between June 1, 2009 and October 1, 2010 are eligible to submit for consideration to an East Coast Music Award.

Early Bird Submission Prize Offered

Any artist/group who submits for an award or showcase by Friday, September 10, 2010 will be entered into a draw for the ‘ECMA 2011 Weekend’ grand prize.  Prize consists of 2 executive delegate passes, $50 towards a car rental, 2-nights’ accommodation at an ECMA 2011 hotel, and restaurant voucher for $100. Names will be entered for each award and/or stage submission.  A winner will be chosen randomly and will be contacted by ECMA representative by Friday, September 17, 2010.
New for ECMA 2011 – Artist Travel Grants

The ECMA is thrilled to be partnering with Sonicbids this year to provide five (5) $1,000.00 cash grants to help export-ready ECMA artists access performance opportunities for 2011 at home and abroad.  Any export-ready artist who submits for ECMA 2011 may apply for one of these grants.  Recipients will be chosen at the discretion of ECMA staff and affiliates. Recipients must have been selected to perform at an official Sonicbids member showcase such as Folk Alliance International, NXNE, SXSW, etc.  Noting that other festival and event submissions and selections are not yet complete, travel grants will be awarded over the calendar year.  Date by which grant recipients will be selected and notified is to be determined.

East Coast Music Week is an annual event organized by the East Coast Music Association as a critical part of its mission statement.  The 2011 event will take place in Charlottetown, PEI from April 13-17.  The ECMA is a not-for-profit organization whose mandate is to foster, develop, promote and celebrate East Coast music locally and globally. The ECMA currently has over 1000 members.
