Fresh & Onlys
 Play It Strange
Release Date: 25th October 2010

Label: In The Red

“The Fresh & Onlys shambles barefoot through Summer of Love-style guitar and tambourine jams, strewing lyrical oddities and flower garlands along the path that leads, if not to where Syd Barrett lives, at least to Dan Treacy’s neighborhood” Dusted
“The Fresh & Onlys traffic in jangly garage-pop, balancing psych-rock swagger with generous dollops of sweetly cockeyed melody. Their recordings are lovingly caked with crud, and their jams sometimes veer perilously close to derailing completely….” Pitchfork
“…just perfect”  - TimeOut

The Fresh & Onlys have, in their short history, already released a flurry of 7"s, a limited-edition cassette, and two full-length albums (on Castleface and Woodsist)  Play It Strange is San Francisco’s Fresh & Onlys’ first for the legendary In The Red Records and third album total in less than three years.

Led by singer Tim Cohen's hazy romanticism, guitarist Wymond Miles' sonic textural sprawl and the incessantly propulsive rhythms of Shayde Sartin and Kyle Gibson, Play It Strange is a record of moody swagger, wild pop, shimmering melodic hooks and  BIG BEAT with  a provocative rawness ala Iggy Pop or The Gun Club.

With pointers ranging from Violent Femmes, 13th Floor Elevators to early 80s British indie-pop and a nod towards the Australian underground scene of the same decade, Play It Strange highlights the band’s ability to create pop music that’s skewed yet perfect.

Produced and recorded by Tim Green (The Fucking Champs, Comets on Fire) at his home studio, Louder, the band were able to indulge their longtime obsessions with 70s/80s guitar pop like The Soft Boys, The Go-Betweens, Mekons, Jacobites, The Plugz. As well as allowing the band to experiment with a range of instruments they would not necessarily have at their disposal – the baritone guitar, Vibraphone and the ARP synthesizer liberated and inspired the band helping them shape melodies, capture the muscularity and depth of the band's live performances and add extra re-vamp to their sound.

When guitarist Tim Cohen acquired an old junked vintage tune amp back in 2008, Shayde Sartin invited himself along with a view to help write and record. Instantly the collaboration took a life of it’s own and the pair have never looked back. They hit the road, playing their songs live as much as they could and, after several line-ups changes, old friends, Wymond Miles (guitar) and Kyle Gibson (drums) became fully fledge members. Sparks flew; the live chemistry was unassailable.

The band have toured extensively across the US including SXSW, All Tomorrow’s Parties, Pop Montreal, etc appeared as the backing band on several occasions for Sixto Rodriguez and more recently supporting Deerhunter and performing at ATP curated by Matt Groening in the UK.

Play It Strange is an addictive record that will establish the Fresh & Onlys as a band that effortlessly laces together threads of great guitar bands from decades past.  They may not be your favorite secret to keep much longer. The band will tour variously with CLINIC, Vetiver and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion throughout the US in November.
