From the Church Guy
If practice makes perfect, then Lent makes Easter.
Some of you know that I'm a recovering music major.  I went to the Crane School of Music at Potsdam for college, and trumpet was my instrument.  For most of the year, my old trumpet sits on a shelf, gathering dust.  But during the festive Great Fifty Days of Easter, I try to add to our celebration by playing trumpet descants for our processional hymns.
So during Lent, I haul out the old horn and start practicing.  It hurts.  I'm not crazy about it.  But by the time Easter rolls around, I'm ready to toot the thing in a way I hope adds to the joy of Easter.
Lent is like that.  We take on some extra spiritual work, or give up something out of discipline, and focus on the cross, on repentance, on self-denial.  Some of us are not crazy about it.  But by the time Easter rolls around, we're ready for resurrection joy.
And it's not too late...the final days of Holy Week are, in effect, a mini-Lent, designed to prepare us for the celebration of that resurrection joy.  So I encourage you to be part of the commemorations of Holy Week: Maundy Thursday and Good Friday (April 2 and 3).
Practice may not make perfect (if you listen to my trumpet in coming weeks, you'll have proof of that!), but it does make for deeper meaning, deeper experience, and deeper joy.

Holy Week at St. Mark's
Maundy Thursday is April 2, and is the day the church around the world remembers that night when Jesus gathered his friends for a meal, took bread and wine, blessed it, and shared it with them with the words, "Do this for the remembrance of me."
At 6:00 p.m., you are invited to a meal in our parish hall downstairs.  We call it "St. Mark's Table," and you bring your own place settings and a dish to share for the potluck supper.  After we eat, we will come upstairs to church at 7:00 for the sacrament of bread and wine.  We'll begin at 7 with the Great Thanksgiving ("The Lord be with you." "And also with you." "Lift up your hearts...").  After we've shared the Bread and Cup, the altar will be solemnly stripped as a visible symbol of the abandonment Jesus suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane, when all his friends deserted him.
Good Friday is April 3, and is the day the church around the world remembers the cross and death of Jesus.
We will have the Good Friday liturgy at noon, and it is a combination of the Good Friday Solemn Collects from the Prayer Book, and the Stations of the Cross.  Meditative music (by the Rector on his recorder) will be offered.
Anyone who pariticipates in these services is almost certain to find the celebration of the resurrection on Easter Sunday even more meaningful.
 Easter at St. Mark's
April 5, 2015 is Easter, and Christians gather in great numbers to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.  At St. Mark's, we tend to have many guests joining us, which adds to our joy.
It's also a challenge to find a seat for everyone, so to solve that wonderful problem, it's our custom to change the Sunday schedule and have three services on Easter morning.
     Our Easter Day services will be at 7:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m., and 11:00 a.m.
The 7:30 a.m. service is just like our usual early service...without music, but with much joy!
At 9:00 and 11:00, we will have hymns (with trumpet on the opening hymn) and music.
Come celebrate the new life Christ gives to us all!
Shifting April's CHOW Sunday & Prayers for Healing
It's our custom to use the first Sunday of the month to offer prayers for healing at our services, and to highlight donations to our CHOW food pantry.  Since Easter Day is the first Sunday in April, we'll shift those customs to the SECOND Sunday, April 12.  (But we accept CHOW donations ANY Sunday and ANY time!)
 Youth Pizza Party
It's time once again for the youth group to get together for pizza and fun.  So at 11:30 on Sunday, April 26, our young people in grades 7 - 12 are invited to gather for pizza with Father Mark, Eric, Sabrina, and Lisa.  Maybe by then there won't be any snow!
 Book Club
"The Invention of Wings" by Sue Monk Kidd tells the story of slavery in the south from two distinct voices.  Sarah and Handful, who was given to Sarah on her eleventh birthday.  Based on historical figures, we follow the privileged Grimke sisters as they break tradition and spend their adult lives involved in the anti-slavery movement as well as fighting for woman's rights.
 Fundraiser for an Eagle Scout
Jake Pierson, one of the St. Mark's teens, is on his way to becoming an Eagle Scout.  One of the requirements is a special project they have to plan for and execute.  To do this they have to raise money.  Jake's fundraiser will be on Sunday, April 12 in the undercroft from 11:30 - 1 p.m.  He will be selling hot dogs and hamburgers.
To the Women of St. Mark's
The annual Sky Lake retreat wil be held on May 2nd and 3rd.  We will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. Saturday and will end in the early afternoon Sunday.  Our focus will be the cross as the tree of life.  It is a most exciting and intriguing topic and the discussion will be enlightening and vibrant.
The cost of the full retreat is $80, which includes meals, snacks and linens (sheets & towels).  The daily rate is $30 per day.  There are a couple of single rooms available at $90 for the night.  They are in a different building but nearby.  Scholarship aid is available through Father Mark.
Please make sure to reserve your spot by calling Mary Taylor at the church office (648-4400).  If paying by check, please make it out to me rather than the church.  Reservations must be in and paid for by Sunday, April 12th.
All are welcome to attend this event and we would welcome your presence, but space is limited, so reserve yours early.
