PRESS STATEMENT: #BoycottWoolworths "Till Jam" at Woolworths Maponya Mall in Soweto
According to reports received by BDS South Africa, a “till-jam” was carried out yesterday at the Maponya Mall branch of Woolworths in Soweto on Thursday, 4 December 2014. The till-jam was supposedly carried out in support of the growing #BoycottWoolworths campaign.
Activists and members of the public allegedly wearing ANC T-shirts approached the Woolworths branch at the Maponya Mall and carried out a "till jam", a tactic inspired by the 1980s anti-apartheid movement both internationally and in South Africa.
According to reports people loaded their trolleys with Woolworths products, rang them up at the tills and then refused to pay for the products due to Woolworths having a trade relationship with Israel. The “till-jams” affected three out of the four tills that were in operation thereby bringing the Woolworths store to an almost complete standstill.
BDS South Africa was not a part of yesterday's #BoycottWoolworths "till-jam" action. BDS South Africa, as an organisation, has agreed in good faith to tone down on various in-store protest actions as part of a recent court order that obligates Woolworths to meet with BDS South Africa on or before the 10 December 2014. The court order, however, does not extend to other organisations and/or entities which are not a part of BDS South Africa.
