Hello Firstname

Wednesday 8 August
Next Wednesday we welcome a speaker all the way from the Emerald Isle, Bill Power, FIPF EFIAP/s EPSA ARPS who will be entertaining us with his talk called Fungi With Lots of Fun Gals. This is a presentation of images by Bill, who is one of Ireland’s best-known contemporary photographers. He promises a unique and entertaining mix of fungi, art nude and creative digital images, many of which have won hundreds of awards in over 30 countries since he entered his first international salon in 2013. Bill was the 2016 Irish Photographer of the Year and is the 2018 projected mono image champion of the French Photographic Federation (he is a member of Image Declic 44, near Nantes).
He has judged several international salons in Europe and the UK and is a distinctions’ assessor with the Irish Photographic Federation. Bill’s passion for photography is inspired by his life-long interests in history and nature. He worked as a news journalist for twenty years, has written over a dozen books and now works as an historian. He adores France which has provided inspiration and elements for many of his creative images. Almost all of his photography is taken using natural lighting.
His talk will include prints, projected images and short audio-visual presentations of his work, accompanied by as many anecdotes about the images and the inspiration behind them as time will allow.
His website is www.billpowerpx.com

2018-2019 Programme
As mentioned last week, the new programme for 2018-2019 has now been finalised and following the taster in Issue 297, the entire programme is now on the BPS website. To see what is instore for the coming year, please visit the web page by following this link.

Please note, there are two competition closing dates in September:
5 September - Projected Image Competition Round 1 - Judge: Brian Swinyard MA (photo) ARPS DPAGB EFIAP/b. Don't forget, the revised/updated size requirement - IMAGES SHOULD BE 1600 X 1200 PIXELS - this is to suit the new projector.
29 September - Print Competition Round 1 - Judge: Ed Cloutman EFIAP
For the advanced level only, the competitions will be subdivided into an ‘open’ category and a ‘prescribed’ category. In each round, two submitted images can be in the 'open' category, the subject and style being the free choice of the entrant. The third image submitted must be in the subject or style category specified for each competition. The Projected Image Competition subject is "Letters" and for the Print Competition the subject is "Wood".

BPS Outing - 29 August
Our Programme Secretary, Mike Hall, has managed to arrange for us to have a private visit to Arnos Vale Cemetery on 29 August, between 7.00pm and 9.00pm. There is ample parking on site and we have access to the whole grounds. More details on the venue https://arnosvale.org.uk/.
There is a good pub nearby called the Knowle  https://theknowlebristol.com/ for those thirsty or hungry members !
All interested members and guests meet at 7.00pm at the cemetery. Don't forget to bring your camera!

Beyond The Wall - Dates For Your diary
Here is some advanced notice of a couple of future events being organised by David Grierson at Beyond the Wall.

The next meeting of the group will take place on Monday 17th September. It will be the You Tube video night based on improving Black and White images.
Before then, a great opportunity to take some cycling photos as the Tour of Britain race has its 3rd stage based in and around Bristol.
If you would like to meet up on Tuesday 4th September, the stage starts @ 11.30am on the Downs but my early thoughts are to be on Beggar Bush Lane in Failand where the riders get released from the controlled start and get racing. Then just before the finish about 2.30pm, the riders have to come up Rownham Hill and over the Suspension Bridge. If you would like to meet up, please let me know.  mail@dgrierson.co.uk

Applications For FIAP Distinctions - 2018
AFIAP / EFIAP / EFIAP Levels – Time Table
Prospective applicants, who have achieved the required criteria will be able to apply for FIAP distinctions this November between Monday 14 November until Thursday 31 January by contacting Dave Coates (FIAP Liaison Officer) by email only. PLEASE DO NOT seek to register unless you have achieved the criteria and that the relevant salon report files have been submitted to FIAP by the salons involved. The process is not designed to deal with speculative requests in the hope or expectation of reaching targets before the deadline date. Full details can be found by following this link.
Dave's email address is davecoates@btinternet.com

Wex Calumet
Members have probably noticed that Calumet (oposite the clubrooms) has been undergoing a bit of a transformation lately. They are due to re-open next week under the new banner of Wex Photo Video. We were talking to the manager, Steve, yesterday and he confirmed that BPS members will still be able to get a discount on certain products. However, this will only be given on production of a current BPS Membership card. If you've lost yours, I'm sure that Carol (Sykes) will be only too happy to furnish you with a new one.

PSA Journal
As you may (or may not) know, BPS is a member of the PSA (Photographic Society of America). This month they have sent me a link to their monthly magazine, not unsurprisingly called the PSA Journal. If you'd like to read a bit about what they get up to, then it is worth following this link. This link also allows you to download a copy of the 2018 PSA Who's Who, where on page 5 you'll see a picture that you might just recognise!

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Studio Bookings
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.

Items For Sale
Please note, we can only carry adverts for items to sell if those items actually belong to the member advertising them.

If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address.

Photographic Acronyms
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list.

Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk
The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, if they are wrong, please let Carol know.
