Hello, Firstname
Please note: if you forward this newsletter to other people, you must remove the unsubscribe information from the email you send to them. If you do not, and one of them clicks on the unsubscribe link, it is YOU who will be unsubscribed. It can be found at the foot of every newsletter.
I'm away next week, so this issue covers the programme for two weeks, 14 and 21 December. This will also be the last newsletter before the New Year, so Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the newsletter team.

Newsletter Editor

Wednesday 14 December - EARLY START

Next Wednesday evening is split into 2 parts, firstly at 7.15pm, we have the absolute highlight of the year, the BPS AGM, you should by now all have received the full documentation for this, sent with previous editions of the newsletter. This part of the evening should be over pretty quickly.

Once you've managed to get over the excitement of the AGM we can get down to the serious business of the evening, Round 2 of the Print Competition, which is being judged by Peter Weaver APAGB CPAGB LRPS. Peter is an old friend of BPS and can be relied on to provide an excellent evening's judging.

Wednesday 21 December - Christmas Social
December 21 is the second highlight of the year (the first being the AGM, of course) - the BPS Christmas Social. Each year, there’s the hope that some of the newer members may come along, but to be honest, they rarely do, which is a shame, as it’d give them, as well as the ‘oldies’, the chance to mingle over a sausage roll or two. No badges will be brandished, but I’ll be on hand to perform introductions if I deem it necessary or if it’s required. Just turn up (usual time-ish), armed with something to eat or drink. No need to go overboard, as it’s very casual with everything being laid out buffet-style. Let’s make up for lost time after the lockdowns.

Please note, because of the nature of the evening, this will not be a Zoomed meeting.

Monday 12 December - DI Group
Last month it was wonderful to see a variety of styles of images from events, travel, nature and creative. Sian Jones recorded the annual Upfest festival in Bristol which sadly is unlikely to happen next year. Ann Mead who is generally well known for her excellence in macro photography of insects showed a different side of her skill in capturing beautiful dawn landscapes in the rugged Bryce Canyon, showing massive natural structures formed by erosion.

Of the number of creative images, I was impressed to see Anita Fullerton quickly pick up late Bob Faris’ techniques of using polarised light to make bright and colourful abstract images. Colin Dixon goes on to make more of his creative images of different styles, some based on Venice. John Hudson’s love of humming birds took him all the way to South America just for a short trip and brought back some stunning images to share with us. John is a prolific photographer and specialises in dance photography at prestigious venues plus his newly found interest in drone photography. It is always good to see his images at the DI meetings.

I am hoping at the next DI meeting on Monday, where every BPS member is invited to join in, that we will have an equally enjoyable time to see many more images. All are welcome to submit whatever images they would like to share, either to show off your work or invite comments on them for competitions or improvements from your fellow members. DI meetings are informal and you are also welcome if you want to ask questions or just watch.

Please send your images to reach me by 6pm-ish on Sunday 11 December. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). If you wish to show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox if convenient, but I am not equipped to receive by direct transfers from Google or Apple Mac systems.

Distinctions Evenings
We can start the advice sessions again, they are held quarterly on the third Monday of the month. Therefore, I propose the date to restart is Monday 16 January 2023, this is OK with Andrew Marker, my co-advisor.

Our advice is for print submissions and is held at the Clubrooms starting at 7.30pm.

For those newer to the Society we offer advice on how to submit panels for the RPS distinctions and series of pictures for PAGB distinctions.

We suggest you bring along proposed panels and we can offer advice and have a general discussion.

Anyone who has a recent successful panel, please can you bring it along as it shows members the standard required.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Received this from Sue O'Connell today.

Travel Photographer of the Year

Over the moon to have received this email today: "Congratulations! You are a finalist on TPOTY”. This competition has grown from small beginnings to a major force with entrants from 140 countries this year, professionals as well as amateur.

My shortlisted images are in two categories “The Art of Monochrome” (only UK finalist) and “Desert to Rainforest - landscapes, environment and sustainability” (one of only two UK finalists). All will be revealed in January, but whatever the outcome, I couldn’t be happier to have got this far.

Salon acceptances:

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Items For Sale
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!

DO NOT REPLY TO THE NEWSLETTER.
