Proverbs 31:8-9 Open your mouth for the speechless, in the cause of all who are appointed to die. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.
DEFENDING THE POOR AND NEEDY
January 22 is a date remembered for the infamous Supreme Court ruling which approved abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. With that in mind some of us as concerned citizens took part in an annual pro-life march and banquet in our city a year ago. The banquet speaker was Abby Johnson. While still in college she was a well-intentioned volunteer at Planned Parenthood. She told us that when a doctor asked her to assist with an ultrasound-guided abortion, she was horrified at watching a 13-week-old baby struggle in vain to get away from the deadly abortion tool invading the mother's womb. Discovering that the baby was not just a "blob of tissue," she had to, and did, leave Planned Parenthood, and now accepts speaking engagements to tell the truth about the abortion holocaust.
Today's Bible verses are powerful and have many applications. They ask us, for one thing, to defend a person who is being slandered or otherwise gossiped about behind their back.
But the verses also have application to those countless babies who are killed in our day through legalized abortion. Can you imagine anyone less able to speak for him or herself than an unborn baby who is being deprived of the very right to life?
As Christian citizens we support lawmakers who are using whatever legal avenues they can to stem the tide of abortions in our land.
We also will keep on praying like this:
Dear Lord, change the hearts of those who do not respect life from conception to natural death. You are a pro-life God, for You are the Giver of all life, and the life and death of each human belongs in Your hands. Lead all mothers, dear Lord, to "choose life" rather than death for the child You have created in them. We pray this in Your name, and for Your honor and glory. Amen.
