Next Wednesday we welcome Dr Ingrid Pollard HonFRPS who will be presenting her talk called The Importance of Si/te/ght.
Ingrid’s images are invested with a sense of belonging, are an act of belonging; be that through cultural, hereditary, practice, experience or through a landscape. She has played an important role photography since the early 1980s photography, documenting black people’s creativity and presence in Britain. Pollard became known for her photographic series questioning social constructs such as Britishness and racial difference.
|
|
While investigating race, ethnicity and public spaces she has developed a bodies of work juxtaposing landscape and portraiture which provide a context for issues of migration, family and home.
Her photo-work projects seek to shape ideas of English landscape, history
and how Belonging is expressed through, from the micro to the transformation of landscape. Through her photography she is concerned with issues of observation, the rendering of light. Elements which are at the root of Photography,
She will be also showing DVD video, ‘Belonging Britain’, of animated still images with sound from an archive of images from 1950’s UK.

PAGB Interclub Projected Image Competition - Warwick
|
Last weekend a group of nine intrepid BPS members travelled up the A46 to Coventry University to support the Society in the annual PAGB Interclub PDI Championship. The competition is one where the top clubs from each federation vie for the title of Champion Club in the PAGB.
The competition consists of a round where all the clubs compete, each showing sixteen images spread over two rounds. This determines the top eight clubs to go into the final where they fight it out to see who the overall champion will be, those who don't make it to the final contest The Plate to determine the best of the rest. This year the day didn't run quite as smoothly as the organisers would have liked. Firstly, the main computer failed to show the correct results at the end of the first round to determine the top 8 clubs. This meant that all the attendant technology had to give way to a system of the MC shouting out a club's name and asking them what score they reckoned they had; this showed that Bristol had narrowly missed out on the top 8 places so was left to fight out the Plate. Having "manually" resolved this problem, the Plate competition was run, but this too ended in chaos with the computer yet again being unable to show the correct scores. After a wait of half an hour or so before the winners could eventually be announced; even then they were only able to tell who had won and it was a tie between Wrekin Arts Photographic Club and Eastwood Photographic Society, who both had a score of 105 points. We don't know what position Bristol finished, but we had a creditable score of 101 points, not too far behind the winning clubs.
The overall winners of the Championship were Wigan 10, with Rolls-Royce Derby 2nd and Chorley 3rd.
The judging seemed to be a little biased towards images of dogs and mountain hares, both of which were there in profusion, in fact at one time we did think that the panel of judges had come from Crufts rather than the PAGB - but there again, that might just be sour grapes!
The scores for the Bristol images are shown below:

Since writing this article, Pete McCloskey (External Competition Secretary) has finally been sent the full results and these have shown that Bristol PS came equal tenth in the Plate Competiton, with 12 clubs sharing the top four marks. This was pretty close and goes to show that there wasn't much to choose between to top clubs.

Bristol Photographic Society and its predecessors – a brief history
Founded around 1866 the Bristol & West of England Amateur Photographic Association was the first organised photographic society in the city. It met in the Philosophical Institute, Park Street ‘discussing subjects relating to their most interesting art and science’. Members were provided with an equipped darkroom as well as a Reading & Lecture Room Between 1880 and 1896 it organised several major photographic exhibitions in the large galleries of the Royal Fine Arts Academy.
It moved to 20 Berkeley Square in 1886 and continued to meet there until it merged with the Bristol Photographic Society (see below) in 1939. The society was the first to bring to a public audience outside London some of the earliest films (or ‘animated photography’ as it was then called) that were shown in the Colston Hall. William Friese-Greene, a Bristol photographer and member of the association, is credited as the inventor of ‘cinematography’!
Bristol Camera Society was founded on 4 November 1887. It originally met at University College in Tyndall's Park then moved to the Kensington School of Science & Art in Berkeley Square in 1896.
Founded in 1901, the Bristol & District Photographic Society
merged with the Bristol Camera Society in 1904 with combined funds of £2 14s. 4d! The society was renamed the Bristol Photographic Club which changed to Bristol Photographic Society in 1923.
Bristol Camera Club was founded in 1939, possibly as a reaction to the above merger. It was disbanded around 1962. The BCC’s original print collection from 1952 to 1962 is now part of our archive in the Bristol Record Office.
Bristol Photographic Society originally met in the Caxton Rooms, Bristol Bridge. The club flourished and merged with the Bristol & West of England Amateur Photographic Association in 1939. The club rooms moved to 42
Park Street which, unfortunately, were destroyed in the major air-raid of 24 November 1940 along with, among other things, their valuable permanent collection of prints. The only prints to be saved were those that were in circulation in a folio and a few that were later found in the bottom of a trunk bought at an auction of furniture from the home of Roderick Fry, past president of the BPS, who died in 1945. These are now in our archive collection.
The Society held the first International Salon of Photography in 1947 which continues, very successfully, to this day.
Following the destruction of the club rooms, meetings were held in a variety of places including the Grand Hotel and 20 Berkeley
Square. The Society moved to West Mall, Clifton in 1970. Thanks to a generous bequest from the late Fred Matthews and after much searching, we were able to move to our wonderful new home in Montpelier in May 2015.

Following on from the recent talk on mount cutters by Longridge, they have now written to say that members can get a discount on the cutters, however to get this discount, orders will have to be placed over the phone, quoting Bristol Photographic Society and Chris Longridge.

ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP.

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.

Please note, we can only carry adverts for items to sell if those items actually belong to the member advertising them.
If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address. |
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list.
