Hello Firstname

Wednesday, 6 July
Next Wednesday, 6 July, is the highlight of the BPS calendar and the night you've all been waiting for - The AGM. This is your chance to hear what's going on behind the scenes at BPS and have your say (I can't promise you'll be heard, but I've got to persuade you to turn up somehow!).

The AGM will only take us up to the tea break; after that, we will have entertainment of a different sort, but again provided (in part) by you, the members. This will take the form of a competition of images taken at the Studio Group meetings over the last couple of years with the audience voting to decide an eventual winner. This proved to be great fun last year and hopefully that success will be repeated again.

Print Distinctions Group
The next meeting of the Distinctions Group will be on Monday, 18 July (7.30pm). This group is open to members who are producing prints and are either already on the road towards RPS or PAGB distinctions or who are thinking about joining that road. This is an informal group led by Pete McCloskey and Graham Reeves who will be able to offer advice and assistance to help you reach those targets. If you'd like to know more about this group, I'm sure that Pete or Graham will be only too pleased to answer your queries at any Wednesday meeting (please note, they will both be away next week)

Garmston Bowl & President's Cup Competitions
This year's Garmston Bowl and President's Cup competitions were held last Wednesday, the judge this year was Chris Palmer FRPS DPAGB APAGB AFIAP, who gave us all a lesson in judging. Chris's comments were both constructive and entertaining, littered as they were with some groaning puns, a fact not lost on David Alderson in his vote of thanks. The results and winning images for both competitions are shown below:

John Hudson has asked me to publish the following:

Re: The Presidents Cup.

Due to a comment made to me on Wednesday evening I began to have doubts as to whether I had won the cup before, which would disqualify my entry. I asked Keith Wood to check the cup and yes, I have. Hence my entry is disqualified and Derwood Pamphilon is the real winner of the Presidents Cup 2016. I should like to be the first to congratulate him.

In mitigation I won five cups one year, (none before or since!) and had forgotten that the Presidents Cup was one of them. It was a genuine mistake and I would ask everyone to forgive me, especially those that competed in the competition on Wednesday.

My very sincere apologies,

John

Circus Photography
I have received the following which may be of interest:

I am contacting you about a rare opportunity to shoot at Circomedia, the world-renowned centre for contemporary circus and physical theatre, with experienced performers/models...at only £10ph for use of the whole school.

My name is Emilie and I am a 27 year old circus performer and model .

On Wednesday 6th July I have access to the entire school and its facilities including (perhaps most importantly) six massive cupboards-worth of bespoke costumes and props.  Additionally, like most other spaces there, the dance studio has incredibly high ceilings with a rigging point for interchangeable aerial equipment, polished wooden floors and mirrored walls making it a particularly exceptional space to work in.

My skills include juggling (balls, clubs, rings, knives), general manipulation and balance, partner acrobatics, trapeze and hoop...

The other model at the school that day will be the phenomenal Rachel Baird. What's so fortunate about this is that there are more than enough spaces and play things for us to be shot individually...or together of course.

We have been after this opportunity for so long and now it's finally here: one circus school, two ladies, a decade's worth of circus garb and our boundless enthusiasm... It's going to be phenomenal!

And my rate is reduced to just £20ph only for the 6th July.

We were wondering if this might be of interest to any of the members of the Bristol Photographic Society and really look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks and all the best,

Emilie Lecocq

Kingswood Photographic Society
We have received the following invitation from Kingswood PS:

We’re pleased to tell you about a special opportunity on Friday 8th July (at St Barnabas Church Hall) to come to an exciting talk from Clifton Cameras, a UK independent digital camera dealer based in Dursley.

The central theme of the talk is to hear about the latest advances in camera technology and how it is influencing the thinking of some enthusiasts considering lighter-weight mirror-less alternatives to the traditional DSLR cameras many of us use. Intended to be very much a hands-on opportunity to handle these exciting new cameras, you will see some examples of the quality images achievable and of course to challenge the experts with your questions.

Also, for those interested in Audio Visual, the second half of the evening should be of particular interest as it is an introduction to video and how video has changed over the years. Experience the video making abilities of DSLR and Mirrorless cameras. Again, examples of still cameras with video making capability and some video specific cameras will be available for you to trial.

We look forward to extending to you a very warm KPS welcome. The cost for this evening is £3.00.  Kingswood PS meet Fridays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at St Barnabas Church Hall, Warmley, Bristol BS30 5JJ

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
After producing nearly two hundred issues of this mighty organ, I finally get to blow my own trumpet. Following the article last week about the trip to the speedway at Highbridge, Keith Wood sent them an email of thanks and included a copy of the article. Well, blow me down, they've only gone a had it published in the national speedway paper (the Speedway Star Magazine) - fame at last! To see the full article, follow this link.

Sue O'Connell has recently won a Gold medal in the recent 1st Pacific Atlantic International Circuit - well done.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
