Wednesday 6 November

Next week we are back to a "live" speaker, when Simon Stafford ARPS will be visiting us with his talk on wildlife and nature.

From a young age, Simon developed a passion and fascination for the natural world, devoting much of his time to observing and learning about the wildlife near his family’s home in rural Kent. His interest in photography began some years later while at university; completely self-taught, he talked his way into the role of photographer for the university's weekly newspaper and has been taking photographs ever since.
During his career he has photographed a broad range of subjects; however, for the past twenty years he has concentrated on photographing wildlife and nature. His pictures have been published in newspapers, books and magazines, including most of the UK photographic press periodicals; he is also the Technical Editor of Nikon Owner magazine.

Simon is not only a photographer, but also the author of over twenty-five books on the Nikon camera system. An experienced tutor who presents a wide range of photography seminars and workshops, he has led landscape, travel, and wildlife photography tours in the UK, Europe, Africa and Asia.

He was awarded as the Overall Winner - Mammals category, in the Natural History Museum/Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2016 competition and has been shortlisted in the same competition on numerous other occasions.

Below are a few images to give you an idea of what we might expect. However, if you'd like to see more, just go to his website -

DI Group - Challenge
Looking ahead to the December DI meeting I have set a second challenge this year to take one or more images from the six or seven provided and to edit them as best as you can, in whatever way you feel happy with and with whatever software is available to you. It is open to all members – experienced and any skill level. The intention is to challenge yourself and demonstrate what is achievable and inspire others. The deadline is 7 December to give you plenty of time to play with the images contained in a folder which may be downloaded following the link below:

It should take you to the BPS OneDrive page where you should see the DI Challenge Dec 24 folder with a download tab along the top. Click on this tab, this will download the folder to a location of your choosing. Once downloaded to your computer you may need to unzip it. The folder includes a pdf file containing brief instructions on the challenge. Please send your edited images to me by the deadline and I will hand them over to Rachel, who has kindly agreed to present them at the December DI meeting.

You will hear more from Rachel about the December meeting in the newsletter as usual. Look forward to seeing your work.

Following the link should take you to a page similar to that which is shown below:

PAGB Interclub Print Competition
Saturday, 19 October, saw Mike and Ralph travel up to Blackburn for the 27th Annual PAGB Inter-Club Print Battle.

We qualified by winning the WCPF inter club print battle earlier this year.

The competition is run over two rounds – round 1 is for a pre-selected entry of 12 images with the top 8 clubs then battling it out in the final and the remaining clubs fighting over the Plate trophy. The competition is like Sudoku; there are strict rules over the mix of images permitted, including minimum numbers of Mono and Colour, maximum numbers of Nature and limits on the number of images per person as well as restrictions on the number of images you can re-use from round 1. You do, however, get the opportunity to amend your selection in response to what seems to be catching the three judges’ attention!

Scoring in Round 1 was high, sadly not for all of our images, and we ended up a disappointing 25th, one place and one mark above Dorchester, our arch rivals in the WCPF.

In the plate competition we fared much better – keeping a tally on the scores, we ended on 107 points (8 above Dorchester) and with an average of over 13 per image, we dared to hope we might win the plate!  Sadly, we ended in 4th, with Colchester and Poulton le Fylde tied in 2nd with 109 and Wreakin Arts the overall winners with 113.

Disappointment didn’t end there – in the raffle, the top prize of a new printer went to the person buying the ticket after Mike!

All in all, a great day, some great images and so close to glory. A huge thank you to everyone whose images were used and to those that provided images for the pool from which our entry was selected – we couldn’t have done it without you.

Round 1 only (9 of our 12 images in Round 1 were swapped out in the Plate competition)

Round 1 and Plate (Three of our Round 1 images were retained and reused in the Plate competition – Proved to be an excellent choice as all three scored a maximum 15 in the plate competition, Richard having also scored 15 in Round 1 as well – well done all three authors)

Five new images were entered in Round 3, to make up our plate entry of 8.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Well done to Simon Caplan, who sent me the following:

Just to let you know that I have just had two images shortlisted in the finals of the Close-Up Photographer of the Year 2024 contest (www.cupoty.com)

In the Intimate Landscape section one of my urban abstracts entitled ‘Veins’ has been shortlisted. It is a macro shot of the tiny cracks in the coating on a shipping container next to Bristol Harbour. It was taken with my Sony A6500 camera and Zeiss Touit 50mm Macro lens.

In the Studio Art section one the abstracts from my ongoing series ‘A Tissue of Sighs’ entitled ‘Floating #4’ was shortlisted. It was created by shooting tissue paper on a light pad. It was part of the five-image panel which I entered (unsuccessfully) for the Presidents’ Cup earlier this year and recently presented to the DIG Group.

Given the quality of the other competition entries (and the photographers behind some of them), I thoroughly expect to do nothing further in the competition so feel it worth celebrating simply being shortlisted

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Marketplace
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!

DO NOT REPLY TO THE NEWSLETTER.
