The documentary MAKE, by Scott Ogden and Malcolm Hearn, is an intimate journey into the lives of four American self-taught artists: Prophet Royal Robertson, Hawkins Bolden, Judith Scott and Ike Morgan. All of these artists find their most powerful voice through art. The film interweaves stories of individuals whose worlds are as unique as their creations and explores why each of them is consumed by obsessive art making. Light refreshments to go with the movie!

15th YOUNG LATINO ARTISTS:
CONSENSUS OF TASTE
MEXIC-ARTE MUESUM
Opens Friday, July 16
419 Congress Avenue
Austin, TX  78701

Curated by Claudia Zapata, M.A. in Art History from the University of Texas at Austin, this exhibition features the current visual artwork of artists from the past fourteen YLA exhibitions.  American art critic Clement Greenberg's paper “Can Taste Be Objective” suggests there is a “consensus of taste” in which disputed taste eventually is agreed upon by all parties.  The curator utilizes this concept to showcase past YLA artists' current work and their development into professional visual artists.
For more information contact (512) 480-9373 or info@mexic-artemuseum.org, or visit the website at www.mexic-artemuseum.org.

THE PENCIL PROJECT NEEDS YOUR HELP!

First, the volcanic eruption that dropped 6 inches of black sand on the newly planted crops, followed that same week by 30 inches of rain in two nights. The damage to the nation's infrastructure was catastrophic....roads and bridges washed away, waste water, and water treatment systems overwhelmed, and deadly landslides that carried not only highways, homes, and electric lines down, but left the survivors in remote villages with no clean drinking water. Now, with what little they have left, these villagers are battling the illnesses that come with contaminated water supplies.

The President closed all schools in the nation, and some are reopening. Many, especially those served by AFFA Member Douglas Rhodenbaugh's nonprofit organization The Pencil Project, were too badly effected to reopen. Many schools lost all their materials, their roofs, some lost entire classrooms. Three campuses were completely destroyed.

Many children have lost everything both at home and at school. They will need medicine, sheet tin for roofing, notebooks, and shoes. The Pencil Project has a large shipment of school supplies in Guatemala City, but these other necessities must be purchased.

The Pencil project needs your help to rescue the most vulnerable members of a truly desperate situation. The children are counting on The Pencil Project...and Doug Rhodenbaugh is counting on you.

Please go to the Paypal link at www.thepencilproject.org and send something today!
