October 1, 2020

Welcome to October!

October is an eventful month for us black cat lovers. Halloween, of course, features the black cat! It's also Black Cat awareness month. And then there's National Black Cat Day in the UK.

But we love them all the time. Feel free to send in photos of your black cat(s) and we'll try to get them all into the newsletter. Pictures of your cats are always welcome and we can feature them throughout the year, no matter what color or breed they are, or even if they are now at The Bridge.

Can our pets get COVID? Can they give it to humans?

It looks like this pandemic isn't over yet, and a second surge is even expected. Do we need to worry about our pets?

So far, it appears that cases do exist but are isolated. Therefore, it's not useful to assume a connection does, or does not, exist. More time, and more studies, will help define this situation.

Here is a website that contains several articles on pet health in general, at the top of their first page, and specifically about Coronavirus concerns below the photo.

While the articles contain valuable information, bear in mind this is also a sales page for the products this company sells. I do favor more natural approaches to health and am glad to see a company that feels the same way. However, I am not associated with their site nor have I used their products, so I cannot make any recommendations. If you have experience with these or similar products, let us know how it worked out!

Why Cats Knead, According to Science

This isn't news to those of us who know cats! But it's nice to know people are thinking about it and talking about it. Of course it means they're happy, contented and comfortable. It begins as an instinctual behavior to facilitate their nursing. Why wouldn't that bring comforting feelings? Right?

The only thing that bothers me is that some people think it's how cats "steal the baby's breath." Have you ever heard of this? It's such an old wives' tale, I thought it had died a long time ago. But nope. I got an email from a cat owner some time ago telling me how she had to kill her cat to save her baby's life. She even entrapped him into the situation by leaving the nursery door open so the cat could go in to visit the crib. When he arrived, as she knew he would, she watched until he started kneading on the baby's chest and sniffing his breath. Then she....

And then I.... oh yes, I let her have it. That poor kitty! Loving a baby got him killed.
Please talk about these things with people you know. We must clear these myths from the rest of the uninformed minds and save more kitty lives.

You know, winter isn't that far off. If you care for a "community cat" colony, or your cats are either outdoor cats or indoor/outdoor, now is a good time to think about and begin making preparations for the cold weather so they don't get "caught out in the cold!"

The Crazy Cat Lady stereoptype is not helpful!

Many of us are proud to be crazy cat ladies, but the fact remains a lot of people think we really are crazy and that it's not good for us, or the cats. This video addresses this dichotomy in popular thinking.
