Dear Joachim Horsley/LittleHorse fans:
This summer I composed music for a film called "My Kingdom (Da Wu Sheng)". This is a Chinese martial arts/action/drama/romance which takes place in 1920's Shanghai, and is based on the lives of traditional "Opera Warriors". The story is great, and the fight choreography, art direction, and costume design are particularly impressive. I wrote and recorded about 80 minutes of music with a 30 piece orchestra and a big band, and performed many of the piano parts myself. Working on this project was a blast!
It premieres tomorrow (September 9th) in the US, and will screen nationally on a limited basis (only a few major cites, probably just under two weeks, with english subtitles). I've included the official synopsis below, as well as theater locations that might be near you (check tomorrow for exact showtimes). I hope you enjoy it!
More news to come later this fall.
All the best -
Joachim

My Kingdom (Da Wu Sheng)
In the closing days of the 19th century, the Prince Regent of the crumbling Qing Dynasty orders the mass execution of the entire Meng clan. Before his beheading in a crowded Beijing marketplace, the Meng clan leader vows that his family will avenge this travesty of justice. Awaiting his death, a five-year-old Meng boy named Erkui bravely sings an aria. The power and purity of his voice touches the onlookers including opera star Master Yu Shengying and his seven-year-old pupil. Deeply moved, Master Yu rescues the boy and the two orphans become brothers. Years later, the boys return to Shanghai on a mission but instead they become sensations of the Shanghai opera scene along with Master Yue's protégé and former lover, the beautiful actress Xi Mulan. But soon, their collective pasts catch up with them and all three ends up in a complex web of love, lust, deceit and betrayal, ultimately ending in tragedy.
Da Wu Sheng 大武生 (English title My Kingdom) might just be the most anticipated Chinese movie of 2011. A Sino-Hollywood collaboration, produced by Andre Morgan (Oscar-winning producer who made Million Dollar Baby), director Gao Xiao Sheng, famed screenwriter Zhou Jin Zi, with action choreography by Sammo Hung (famed actor and martial artist with 40 years of experience as a martial arts director for over 200 movies, and who trained with Jackie Chan under the same master and is his Shi Xiong -- elder martial arts brother).
