Next Wednesday, 16 April, we welcome David Boag to BPS, when he will be presenting his talk, The World of a Wildlife Photographer. He writes the following:

This entertaining lecture spans 35 years of photography and takes us to 5 continents. The questions I am most often asked relate to how I began - the commissions I have undertaken and the 18 books I have had published. Also how I work and my views on equipment. On the surface it follows the course of my career however, it is actually designed to be an encouraging inspiration for every level of photographer. We touch upon the challenges of working in a strange environment and on subjects that are not familiar. We see the value of attitude and enthusiasm. The whole point is not to make wildlife photography a speciality for the elite but to make it available to anyone with enthusiasm and persistence.
I am a wildlife photographer and the author/photographer of 18 published books. My first book ‘The Kingfisher’ was published in 1982 and contained a wealth of unique photographs illustrating the life of this remarkable bird.
Encouraged by my publishers and driven by my enthusiasm, my next book was about another spectacular bird, and ‘The Atlantic Puffin’ and was published a couple of years later.

For several consecutive years my work became the subject of the television programme ‘Out of Town’ and I have since been involved with both television and radio, either in an advisory capacity or as a knowledgeable guest or presenter.

I lecture regularly throughout the country to a wide variety of natural history, photographic and general interest audiences. On numerous occasions I have spoken at major conferences for organisations such as the National Trust, the RSPB, British Trust for Ornithology and the Royal Photographic Society.

A more confidential aspect of my work are the books I have created for prestigious, private estate owners. I have produced over 20 of these one-off, handcrafted tomes that are leather bound, photographic essays; regarded as heirlooms by my clients

I regularly led African wildlife safari trips to destinations that included Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
More recently I was asked to undertake a corporate commission to photograph, write and design a book about the wildlife and natural beauty of a quarry! This led to several more major commissions throughout Britain and Ireland and eventually to working for 4 years in the USA.
I have been a Cruise Ship Speaker for many years now, speaking mainly on natural history subjects as well as photography.  Having spent more than 500 nights at sea, I have been privileged to visit areas of the world that I would otherwise never have seen.

Digital Imaging Group
A reminder that the next Digital Imaging Group Meeting is this coming  Monday 14, April at 7.30pm.

Meetings are informal and take place at the clubrooms and via zoom.

We have something a little different lined up for the April meeting.

If last month’s practical session whetted your appetite for still life photography don’t miss the April DI Group as Simon Caplan’s presentation will be covering this very subject, looking at some of the basic concepts that contribute to a successful still.

After the break Colin Dixon will be demonstrating his approach to creative editing with some completed examples. To round off the evening we have a presentation from Sue Swift.

I look forward to seeing you.

Rachel Domleo.

External Competitions
GB CUP & Trophy

Following last week's report about the GB CUP & Trophy, we now have the final club rankings:
  • GB Cup, Open (PDI) – 11th out of 49, with 150 points – Winners, Rolls Royce scored 170, quite a margin!
  • GB Cup for Nature (PDI) – Equal 18th out of 49 with 149 points – Winners Poulton-in-Fylde scored 163 in a close fought competition.
  • GB Trophy, Open (Prints) – 7th out of 15 with 154 points – Winners, Catchlight scored a massive 178 dropping only 2 points
  • GB Trophy for Nature (Prints) – 6th out of 15 with 160 points – Winners, Rolls Royce scores 174.

ONLY MONO

Following on from the relative disappointment of the GB Cup & Trophy, three club members, Ralph Snook, Steve Field and Mike Martin, witnessed a ‘good day in the office’ at Cymru Monochrome's print competition at Port Talbot last weekend. 34 clubs competed, each submitting 4 images from different authors. Having won two years ago, coming second last year, we were determined to win back the trophy. And so it was – our first three images scored the maximum 20 points and Mike’s final image managing a mere 19 to end on 79 in first place.

But it gets better, with three of our images picking up awards:

  •  Trees in the snow  by Pam Sherren, printed by Mike was awarded HC
  •  Last Look Back by Barry Mead was awarded 2nd place
  •  Waiting and Dreaming by Rachel Domleo, printed by Mike was awarded 1st and received the trophy.
Mike Martin receiving the award on behalf of BPS, from judge, Peter Weaver.

Quite a good outcome. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Studio Group

Photo Frome
Photo|Frome returns in April 2025 with the theme ‘inEquality’.

Through photography from internationally acclaimed, national and regional artists, we reflect on stories of global and local justice and equality. Running from 5 April – 27 April, the festival team are following two successful editions with their most ambitious event yet.
  • The third edition of the festival includes 13 free exhibitions (indoor and outdoor), talks, workshops, portfolio reviews, pop-up portrait studio (Faces of Frome), curator tours and more.
  • Susan Meiselas, recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Photography of the Sony World Photography Awards 2025, will be showing her signature colour reportage work from Nicaragua.
  • Photo|Frome will again offer an international Open Photobook Award and the MPB Student Awards. In 2025, we will also have a new Open Call on the inEquality theme.
Rook Lane Chapel, the festival’s central venue, features Joss Barratt’s photography taken whilst working on set with acclaimed director Ken Loach alongside documentary photographers independently working on similar issues as the films. there are major themes drawn from Loach’s films: colonialism and resistance, living conditions and the human spirt, refugees and the welfare state. The “constructed reality” film stills aim to start a conversation with photographers who have covered the same themes in their own way. This includes documentary photography by Susan Meiselas, Nick Hedges, Tish Murtha, Jim Brogden and Roland Ramanan, conceptual work by Paul Seawright and interpretive work by Fast Forward: Women in Photography curated by Anna Fox

Further exhibitions take different approaches to the theme. This includes Joanne Coates whose work explores rurality, hidden histories, and income-based inequalities, Valentina Sinis’ ‘Were Afghan Women to Unveil their tales‘, Sujata Setia’s ‘A Thousand Cuts’, Sarah Palmer’s ‘Wish You Were Here’, Evgeniya Strygina’s ‘Home from Home’ and Tim Smith’s ‘In The World But Not Of It’. Students from Falmouth University, Boomsatsuma, Bristol and Frome College will also be exhibiting, as will the local collective Frome Wessex Photographic.
