Hello, Firstname

A Message From The Chairman
Last Wednesday saw us hold our first weekly programme meeting at Unit 13 for a very long time. A big thank you to the 31 members (plus the judge) who came. I’m sure that everyone, like myself felt that it was good to see people face to face again, and to view the images on a large screen amongst friends.

Of course, it was a hybrid meeting with a similar number of members viewing via Zoom, and our thanks go to Matt and Ken for the work they put in to make the evening a success. They did not do this alone, with a number of other Council members helping with testing out the equipment and arrangements.

There were some teething problems with the sound system, but these were resolved as the evening progressed. We now believe that from next week the teething problems will have been largely eliminated and the sound should be fine over Zoom.

It did become apparent that it is even more important running hybrid meetings that once the meeting has started that everyone watching on Zoom should make sure they are muted while the presentations are taking place. It would be appreciated if everyone could check this is happening in future.

This week we did not provide refreshments during the break, but we intend to do so from next week, so the usual tea, coffee and biscuits will be available. We will be encouraging members to avoid the dense queueing and congestion that can occur, and to either step outside (weather permitting) or return to the main area once they have their drinks, probably returning via the corridor rather than directly back to main hall.

This was the first step to getting ‘back to normal’ and we would like to see the number of attendees increasing as the weeks go by. We are not aware of anyone who felt unsafe this week, and we will work to make sure that things stay that way. It would be good to see more members attending and having the social contact that we have been missing. Plus of course, you get to see live full screen presentations, and something we have all missed - prints!

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please email them to:

Regards
Ralph Snook
BPS Chairman

Amateur Photographer of the Year 2021

Many of you will be familiar with this annual competition (mentioned in Newsletter 423 way back in February).Few of you will be aware that this year for the first time, participants can declare their membership of a Camera Club, where the efforts of the entire membership are aggregated to determine the top ranking club, and recipient of the £500 club prize.

After 7 rounds have been judged – our own Mike Martin is currently heading the individual leaderboard (a position that he assures us is soon to change when the latest round, still in judging, is declared). However, as a result of this singular effort, Bristol PS also currently sits second in the Club ranking behind Launceston where the combined efforts of 11 of their members have taken the top spot.

So apart from keeping your fingers crossed for Mike, you can do you bit for BPS by entering the one or both of the remaining rounds.
  • The top 50-70 images shortlisted all score points so it is easy to build up a large score.
  • The current round open for entries is “Street” the same as our internal Round 1 in the annual Print Competition so no-one can claim you haven’t got anything to enter!
  • Closing date 1st October.
One entry is free for anyone quoting the code printed in each issue of Amateur Photographer (you don’t have to buy it, just know someone who has read it!)Get involved and support Mike/BPS. Further details available on Photocrowd or just ask Mike

BPS Member's Exhibition
BPS member, Paul Moran, has sent me the following:

I am pleased and proud to be one of the fourteen photographers exhibiting their project work as part of ‘Realities Constructed’ being held at The Four Corners Gallery in London from 6 to 9 October. We are the top students from the Falmouth University MA Photography programme and graduated last month. My work is a six month study of a former working men’s club in Reading, now a pub and open to all. This exhibition will move to New York, Melbourne, and Houston next year.
