Happy Valentine's Day!

Next week is our annual celebration of the various love connections we have in our lives. For me, it's cats! If you feel that way, too, here is some important information to help keep yours safe:

7 Valentine’s Day Toxins

Besides chocolate, poison control centers may see these additional common (and not-so common) pet poisonings around Valentine’s Day:

Flowers, especially lilies, can cause kidney failure.

Marijuana toxicity is more common as the plant is legalized in more and more locations. Keep it, and products made with it, out of pets' reach.

Onions and garlic can cause changes in blood chemistry in dogs and cats.

Alcohol, especially wine, may be more accessible during this holiday as a glass could be left on a table where a pet can lap it up. More common for dogs to do, however, as cats usually are not attracted to the smell of alcoholic beverages. But it's still a good idea to keep it out of the way.

Gum is commonly sweetened with xylitol nowadays and should not be left out where pets can get to it, especially dogs. Cats are not as likely to be interested in it.

Perfume is generally encountered by a pet licking its owner. Very little is likely to be ingested, thus, the risk is small.

Should cats drink milk?

Emergency Medical Care

Sometimes we find a stray animal in need of medical care, like a cat or dog, that has been hit by a car and no owner is around. It can present quite an inner conflict as some veterinarians are not willing to treat them unless you, the rescuer, can pay for it. If you can't do that, the animal is pretty much doomed. Here is one potential source of help:

Since you're probably not located where they are, this agency will provide funds and care approval forms to your vet remotely. See the article for contact information and requirements for consideration.. For example, the animal must be stray, not owned, and not housed by a rescue or shelter.
