And we're back. In case you hadn’t noticed, The Raygun has been on hiatus for the best part of 2023, as we were ensconced in our other gigs, with a wealth to cover there, and had a few personal issues too. Anyway, we’ve missed you, we hope you’ve missed us. But now we’re back and raring to go. The Raygun will be returning and, as we’ve oft noted before, we’ve been in the industry for something like four decades and love the business and want to continue as long as possible. And after wrestling with our conscience, we want to carry on because we’ve still got the same enthusiasm we had in the VHS era. The Raygun is free to receive, to subscribe send an email to info@theraygun.co.uk and we'll add names to the list. Please send us screening invitations, product press releases, news and anything else to Tim at the usual address (the one on this email) and we look forward to working with you all again…
The whole world’s gone Pandora potty while we were away, as Avatar: The Way Of Water has trounced all the competition first at theatrical and, more recently, as a digital download. Its first week sales, as it came out on digital download, gave it the biggest week one since Tom Cruise jetted in in the Top Gun sequel at the end of summer 2022, with more than 160,000 units purchased. It has since been slated to appear in the Disney+ streaming service from June 7 and this week has seen a further announcement from Disney, as the major unveiled plans for a physical home entertainment release for the sequel as well as a 4K UHD Blu-ray fr James Cameron’s original blockbuster set on Pandora. As Disney’s announcement this week noted; “On June 26, Avatar fans have cause for celebration as Avatar: The Way of Water makes its long-awaited debut on 4K UHD, Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD. On June 20, the original Avatar also arrives for the first time on 4K UHD in High Dynamic Range to all digital retailers and is coming soon on 4K Ultra HD Disc. 4k Ultra HD, Blu-ray 3D & Blu-ray formats of Avatar: The Way of Water release will include a special bonus disc, with over three hours of bonus content featuring the filmmakers, cast and crew. All physical formats will feature a family friendly audio track.”
Trade organisation BASE is gearing up for its 2023 awards event, due to take place at the regular recent venue of The Roundhouse in north London. It takes place on November 2. It has added new gongs to the ceremony, which is now grouped into five categories. These are …Of The Year, covering digital and physical retailer awards, independent labels with separate awards for both digital and physical imprints, distributor, title and agency; Campaign, taking in two or catalogue, four for film and one apiece for specialist and TV; People’s Choice and Heroes, with the new addition of People’s Choice: Entertainment Moment of the Year; Best In Class, with, alongside packaging/artwork and social PR there are new gongs for Bonus Features, Insights, Technical Operations and Video Asset and Innovation, with five new awards for Audience Engagement Initiative of the Year, Commercial Initiative, Creative Initiative, Script to Screen and Social Impact.
Comment on the awards came from chief executive Liz Bales who said: “Each year, the BASE Awards get better and better. It’s great to see the return of the legacy categories that reward the outstanding triumphs of the previous year, as well as exciting new awards that celebrate the broad scope of BASE and it’s members in 2023, and the breadth of organisations now eligible for multiple trophies on the night. We look forward to welcoming old friends and new to the Camden Roundhouse this November.” BASE project and events manager Phoebe Vaneveld-Taylor added: “We strive to ensure the BASE Awards are always exciting and a true celebration for our membership and everyone in the UK entertainment category. This year we’ve aimed to make the entry process more accessible, implementing a price cap on the Best in Class entries and simplifying the entry submission guidelines and processes.” More information is at https://base-awards.org
Fremantle is gearing up for what is traditionally one of the the biggest releases on the WWE calendar in the shape of the annual Wrestlemania bash, the huge event which sees assorted storylines from the grappling organisation coming to their climax. This year’s title, Wrestlemania Goes Hollywood (it took place this year in LA), is due on May 29 and the company’s Ken Law said: “The WWE has been on a roll. Throughout the pandemic it kept the quality and innovative content flowing when other producers dried up. The creative has excelled during the last year and as a result, our market share has increased over the last three years and our WWE new releases are regularly making the OCC Top 10. Their annual flagship WrestleMania event in April was the pinnacle of this as WrestleMania went Hollywood with many fans and wrestling commentators claiming it was the best WrestleMania of all time. As this was the 39th WrestleMania WWE have staged, that is really saying something. We’re out on DVD and Blu-ray with WrestleMania Goes Hollywood on May 29 and we’re anticipating a Top 5 OCC chart position with sales noticeable up year-on-year.”
It’s rightfully acclaimed as one of the greatest British films of all time, one of the finest horrors ever made anywhere and also the folk horror movie that set the template for the entire genre – and now it’s returning again in a 4K definitive edition. That’s right, The Wicker Man has been given the full restoration treatment by Studiocanal which is planning an ambitious and wide-ranging release plan for it, partnering with a slew of third parties to create maximum noise around the release. The film has been restored to 4K standards in its The Final Cut form and will benefit from a one night only theatrical release on the apt date of June 21 – the summer solstice screenings around the country will be preceded by footage from the 50th anniversary event celebrating the film held on May 1, hosted by Edith Bowman and attended by star Britt Ekland and a host of others, including fans such as Reece Shearsmith. September sees the release of two editions from Studiocanal on home entertainment formats, with all three versions of the film – The Final Cut, director’s and original theatrical cuts – restored. One will be on 4K, the other a five-disc collector’s edition set. As well as the trio of Wicker Men, this includes an EP put together by long-standing indie label Heavenly Recordings, which features seven new versions of songs from the familiar performed and remixed by the labels acts and associates, including Katy J Pearson. One track will be released as a single ahead of the home ent release, with the full EP available in the autumn. There are further collaborations too, taking in as varied partners as hip clothing company TSPTR, which has Snoopy. Scorsese and Grateful Dead collaborations under its belt, andVisit Scotland.
Comment on the ambitious programme came from Studiocanal’s Alison Arber who said: “It’s time to keep your appointment with The Wicker Man and experience the film Empire called ‘The best British horror film ever made’ in glorious 4K. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Robin Hardy’s Pagan nightmare, we will be screening the film nationwide for one night only on June 21, Summer solstice, which will include footage from our special May Day event featuring Britt Ekland. In addition, on September 4 we release a stunning four-disc Steelbook with artwork by Sophie Bland, a five-disc rigid book pop-up collector’s edition with the stunning artwork Richey Beckett designed – including all 3 versions of the film restored in 4K, plus a very special EP from Heavenly records with key artists covering some of the tracks from the film’s original soundtrack, a 64 page booklet with brand new essays, posters and postcards. To not get your hands on these will mean you really do understand the true nature of sacrifice!” Elsewhere, Heavenly’s Katy J Pearson said: “Strangely, I heard The Wicker Man soundtrack way before I watched the movie. I remember my dad playing me Willow’s Song and I found it hypnotic and it started being a song I listened to a lot. The version I did for the record was a kind of psychedelic/ kraut rock version so having the opportunity to work with my friends Broadside Hacks on a traditional cover which they put together so beautifully has been really brilliant. I’m such a fan so it’s an honour to be involved in the 50th anniversary of The Wicker Man.” VisitScotland Head of Industry Development, Ken Massie, said: “The Wicker Man is hugely important to Scotland’s rich film history and, to this day, still attract visitors to Dumfries & Galloway to explore the film locations. “Film and TV tourism helps attract visitors to many regions in Scotland. Our research shows that one in five international visitors have visited a film or TV location whilst on holiday abroad.”
Talking of May Day screenings, while Studiocanal was debuting the 4K restoration of The Wicker Man at the Picturehouse Central, on the other side of the Thames, at the BFI Southbank, the BFI was airing a more recent folk horror outing, Enys Men, the sophomore feature from Mark Jenkin, whose Bait was one of the big success stories for the organisation in recent years. Enys Men was, like its predecessor, hugely acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, with Jenkin being rated as a unique creative voice by the likes of Mark Kermode. The film arrived on Blu-ray on May 8, as an extras-laden set and to mark the occasion, Jenkin attended a screening of the film at the BFI’s spiritual home, accompanying the film with a live rendition of the score the the Cornish Sound Unit, made up of the director and Dion Star. The packed screening provided the perfect launch pad for the screening and, as we can testify, the film is even better on repeat viewings. The organisation’s Phil Roberts said: “Bait was a huge success for the BFI across all platforms including physical. The overwhelming sales of Mark’s sold-out Enys Men preview tour demonstrates the connection he has forged with UK film audiences. We rode the wave of interest by making the Enys Men Blu-ray available to pre-order and it is packed with as many interviews, commentaries and archive materials as any of our re-release editions. Definitely one of the releases of 2023.”
An interesting sidenote to the release of Enys Men is among the executive producers for the film is industry stalwart Johnny Fewings who is still involved as an executive producer for a few projects at Universal after a lengthy career that progressed through Virgin’s retail arm, the old MCEG Virgin Vision and then various incarnations at PolyGram then Universal, including pioneering work with VVL on live comedy VHS and DVDs alongside many other innovations, Fewings spoke to Jenkin after being hugely impressed with Bait, his role on Enys Men included advising on distribution, sales and more. He’s keen to point out that Jenkin is the real power behind the film. “Jenkin is incredibly creative and a real talent,” he told The Raygun.
Back at the BFI and the organisation has been undergoing something of a purple patch with its recent theatrical releases of new feature films such as Enys Men, as well as restorations of classic films (more on those in a minute) and has had another strong home entertainment release recently, with the awards friendly EO, which has been wining fans over ever since the London Film Festival in 2022, and earned itself a clutch of awards nominations as well as plaudits for being one of the few feature films to ever concentrate on, er, donkeys. Commenting on the release, the BFI's Ben Stoddart said: “EO continues to gain new fans, and it’s great to have released it on Blu-ray and DVD. Jerzy Skolimowski’s life and career (both before and after he became a filmmaker) is certainly unique, and it was great to celebrate both him and his work in a recent season at BFI Southbank. Our release of EO was followed by a two-disc Blu-ray featuring two of Skolimowski’s early works, Identification Marks: None and Hands Up!”
Another recent success story for the BFI has seen the UK get a dose of dance fever with the all-singing, all-dancing – literally – release of a newly remastered version of seminal 2Tone film Dance Craze. The 1981 live music concert eschews interviews and just features The Specials and the rest of the bands signed to the legendary ska-influenced imprint such as Madness, The Beat, The Selecter and more. The remastered version played at selected cinemas, and an accompanying Blu-ray/DVD loaded with extras and more was released at the end of March. The proceedings were kicked off with a special screening at the IMAX followed by a Q&A attended by some of the stars. The Raygun caught the film at our local Picturehouse and it really is a treat. Not only has it gone down well with gentlemen of a certain age (no longer rude boys, but rather rude middle-aged chaps, who were whooping and hollering during our screening), but has also introduced a legion of younger fans to the sounds and sights of the movement too. What’s more, the release has got off to a fine start on home entertainment formats too, and has sold out its first, slipcased limited edition run. The BFI’s John Ramchandani said; “The Imax and UK-wide screenings launched the Blu-ray/DVD release far better than we had expected and the film has taken more than £75,000 at cinemas. Stars of 2Tone including Jerry Dammers, Pauline Black, Rhoda Dakar, Buster Bloodvessel and cinematographer Joe Dunton lent their support to Q&As which in turn propelled our physical release One Step Beyond to number three in the UK OCC dailies and number one in the Amazon Blu-ray charts. It has to date sold more than 6,000 copies.”
And, last but not least from the BFI, there’s another intriguing title on the way further down the line, with news that the legendary short film from early 90s London acid house pranksters Flowered Up based around their seminal single Weekender is, at last, getting a Blu-ray release. The 20-minute tale of a night out clubbing in the capital is accompanied by new feature length documentary I Am Weekender. The film, directed by Chloé Raunet, premiered at the Glasgow Film Festival and will get a theatrical airing in the summer ahead of the release. A launch screening at the BFI on June 15 has already sold out. The Raygun’s Tim Murray recently interviewed her for The Ransom Note site, where she said: “Obviously it’s going to appeal to an audience that was there at the time, that are fans of the band, fans of the video, who know this inside out. But how could we also make it relevant to a younger audience that’s maybe not familiar with that? And I’ve spent a lot of time listening to people talking about acid house, the same old heads saying the same old things. In that sense, getting Anna Haigh’s perspective [the former Bocca Juniors vocalist stars in the original short], Roy the Roach’s perspective, was important. These were bits I wanted to incorporate. “[Make-up artist] Sacha Souter was one of the later interviews, she was really good. It’s nice to balance it out.” You can read the article here https://www.theransomnote.com/art-culture/featured/weekender-manoeuvres/
Our old pals at Signature have been busy while we were on hiatus, not just with an admirable slate of ongoing releases spanning different genres, but with a raft of appointments as it reshuffled the team at its new head office in the West End of London. Its recent releases have been as diverse as ever, with its Q2 activity kicking off with the acclaimed sci-fi thriller Lola, which has already performed at theatrical, where it received a wealth of strong reviews, and home premiere, ahead of an EST release in June and VOD and Blu-ray in July. (Uncut called it the "most audacious and inventive film you’ll see this year”.) It’s also teamed up with US independent production powerhouse A24 for the theatrical then on to TVOD, DVD and Blu-ray bow of The Inspection, a powerful drama that got a widespread cinema release to platform its subsequent home entertainment outing. This week has seen an EST and VOD release for Little Bone Lodge, a horror that has won support from FrightFest and has also seen star Sadie Soverall, who appears alongside Joely Richardson, post supportive release details to her 500,000-plus Instagram followers. This weekend sees it landing in cinemas with the release of My Fairy Troublemaker, a family film landing in time for the half-term holidays and the kind that Signature has worked so well in previous years. Into June and it has a DVD release for Lamborghini, an ideal Father's Day gift for Top Gear dads. It arrives not just with a digital track record, but comes wrapped in a highly distinctive yellow sleeve which gives it a distinctive sports-car-style feel. The grey pound crew will be pleased with My Sailor My Love, which arrives on EST and VOD on June 9 and 19 respectively, ahead of a DVD in July for an audience that is still fond of physical media. Sharks are still huge business and none come bigger than the Megalodon, the star of The Black Demon, the latest undersea creature feature from Signature, available for EST and VOD on 9 an 26 June respectively before DVD and Blu-ray on July 17. Having already performed exceptionally well with last year’s The Reef: Stalked, this too has plenty of potential. June is rounded off on the 26 with an EST and TVOD release of King On Screen, which charts the big and small screen adventures of titles based on the works of the great horrormeister Stephen King. The film will release on Blu-ray later in the year.
Sticking with Signature and, as noted above, it has had added to its staff recently as well as rejigging some positions. Now firmly ensconced at the company is new marketing director Kristin Ryan, an industry stalwart who boasts experience at the likes of Momentum, eOne, and, for the past eight years, at Studiocanal. Emilie Barra, herself a former Studiocanal staffer, has moved over to become head of International marketing. Also joining as head of business affairs is Caroline Duborg, alongside new head of theatrical sales Sophie Doherty. Lastly, former marketing director Claire Loewenthal has returned from ,maternity leave to take up the new role of sales director. Ryan told The Raygun: ““With an exciting and varied line up across all distribution channels for 2023 and beyond, it’s an incredibly dynamic time for Signature. I look forward to navigating the changing, challenging and exciting world of distribution with such a fantastic and dedicated team.”
More comment on the Signature changes came from the company’s Jon Bourdillon, who said: “We’re really excited to welcome Kristin and Sophie into the team and congratulate Claire and Emilie on their internal moves. It’s an incredibly exciting and important time for Signature and we’re confident we’re setting the business up for continued success and growth.” And a returning Claire Loewenthal added: “It’s great to be back at the mothership and the best in the biz, Signature. Having already spent a very enjoyable 11 years at the company – before making my very own acquisition in the form of a baby – I am back in a very exciting new role and with a team who will help take Signature to new heights.”
Even while we’ve been on hiatus, the boutique labels who now form something of a bedrock for the business, certainly when it comes to catalogue, have been beavering away as busy as ever. The next batch of titles from Eureka has just landed set to land on Monday May 22 and 29 before we look at its June and July releases, here’s the company’s national accounts manager Marcus Garwood on its slate. He said: "Martial arts and following the huge success of our Mr Vampire release the hopping vampires are back. Featuring a bevy of Hong Kong legends including Lam Ching-ying, Yuen Biao, Wu Ma, Richard Ng, Yuen Wah, and many more, this collection brings together the other four beloved sequels in this series as a limited edition set. Mr Vampire II, Mr Vampire III, Mr Vampire IV and Vampire vs Vampire are all here (Vampire vs Vampire makes its UK debut with no previous theatrical or home video release over here until now). The set is encased in a limited edition slipcase featuring new artwork by Darren Wheeling, it also contains a limited edition collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the films and the Jiangshi genre by James Oliver. The month of May is rounded off on the 29th by Ringo Lam's 1994 wuxia genre gem Burning Paradise; a dark fantasy epic, filled with shocking violence and incredible choreography. The film is presented here for the first time in the UK since the VHS era in a blood-soaked special edition; complete with a Limited Edition O-Card slipcase featuring new artwork by Darren Wheeling, plus a limitedeEdition collector’s booklet featuring new writing by James Oliver."
On to June and more martial arts, as Eureka’s Marcus Garwood outlined the titles for the month. He said: “June here at Eureka Entertainment delivers a blistering multi-punch combo with three martial arts action essentials. 1989's Lady Reporter starts us off in round one. The film is directed by Mang Hoi (Yes,Madam!) And stars Cynthia Rothrock in her first leading role. Rothrock plays Cindy, the titular female reporter sent to investigate an unscrupulous newspaper editor (Ronny Yu). Teaming up with Elizabeth Lee (Long Arm of the Law Part 3), the two go up against a series of opponents played by some of the greatest “bad guy” actors in 80s cinema, including Billy Chow (Fist of Legend), Jeff Falcon (Outlaw Brothers, Six String Samurai), and Vincent Lyn (Tiger Cage). Disc extras include (among many others) brand new interviews with Cynthia Rothrock and Mang Hoi. This release will be the film's UK debut on Blu-ray from a brand new 2K restoration. Round Two and it’s Tadashi Imai's 1981 gem Revenge [Adauchi] up next. A masterwork collaboration from director Tadashi Imai (Cruel Tale of Bushido) and screenwriter Shinobu Hashimoto, the writer of Masaki Kobayashi's great masterpiece Harakiri, Revenge [Adauchi] is a lacerating attack on the absurdity and hypocrisy of feudal Japan. This limited edition release makes its worldwide debut on Blu-ray from a new 2K restoration and is enrobed in a slipcase featuring artwork by Tony Stella. Third and final round now with a knockout punch predicted from Kinji Fukasaku's spectacular 1981 chanbara fantasy epic Samurai Reincarnation. Homaged in Tarantino’s Kill Bill, Samurai Reincarnation makes its UK debut here from a stunning 2K restoration as part of the Masters of Cinema series. The release features a limited edition slipcase with stunning artwork from Takato Yamamato. Disc extras include a brand new interview with filmmaker Kenta Fukasaku, brand new audio commentary by Tom Mes. The release is completed with a collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film.”
Moving further ahead to July and Eureka’s Marcus Garwood continued with its forthcoming slate, saying: “July's line-up here at Eureka is just as hot as the Summer's temperatures should be with two high action additions for your collection. Following on from our earlier Junya Sato release The Bullet Train, we bring another of this award-winning Japanese director's films, namely Golgo 13 as a UK debut on Blu-ray. Golgo 13 is the first film adaptation of the long-running manga series by Takao Saito where a mysterious killer-for-hire (played by Ken Takakura) completes his missions with his signature scoped M16 rifle. The film has been almost impossible to see outside of Japan for many years, so this release in an absolute essential. Its limited initial release comes in a slipcase featuring new artwork by Tony Stella. Disc extras include a brand new interview with film writer Tatsuya Masuto and film critic Masaaki Nomura. The package is completed with a limited edition collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Tom Mes. It’s a double bill of action next as we bring you a two-film saga influenced by The Godfather and Once Upon a Time in America. Directed by Taylor Wong, Rich and Famous and Tragic Hero collectively tell a decades-spanning tale of brotherhood and betrayal with a heroic bloodshed twist. Both films make their Blu-ray debuts here in the UK from these new restorations. This two disc Blu-ray set comes with a limited edition slipcase featuring artwork by Grégory Sacré (Gokaiju). Disc extras include (among others) brand new audio commentaries on both films by Asian film expert Frank Djeng (NY Asian Film Festival), plus a brand new video piece looking at the dubbing of Hong Kong films into English during the 80s, featuring an interview with Simon Broad who was the voice of Chow Yun Fat for the English language releases of many of his films. The set is completed with a collector's booklet featuring new writing on both films by James Oliver. Last, but certainly not least, July sees the re-scheduled release of Andrzej Żuławski: Three Films. While moving into the final stages of production before disc authoring, new video extras were submitted to Andrzej Jaroszewicz for his approval (Jaroszewicz worked as cinematographer on several Żuławski’s films and was a camera operator on The Devil). Upon reviewing footage from The Devil, Jaroszewicz expressed some concerns. The Devil was originally restored back in 2015 but was rejected by Żuławski as the colour grading was incorrectly applied. After Żuławski died in 2016, Daniel Bird made great efforts to have the film graded correctly, and Andrzej Jaroszewicz was brought in to oversee this new grading, which was completed that year. So, upon reviewing our extras, Jaroszewicz was surprised to see footage from The Devil that used the older incorrect grading. After contacting the licensor, it seems that at some point in the past seven years the version of the film approved by Jaroszewicz has gone missing and the older version is all that is on file. After assessing the situation and raising the issue with the Polish Society of Cinematographers, the only solution was to go back to the original materials and re-do the grading, with Jaroszewicz again overseeing the project. As such, it will not be possible to make the originally planned release date. The rescheduled release date will now be July 31. The three films from the uncompromising visionary and a true maverick of European cinema will now be presented as a three-disc set rather than the previously announced two-disc set."
Warner is celebrating its centenary this year, the official birthday of the studio fell on April 4, although the studio has announced a year’s worth of activity to promote its catalogue and more, with home entertainment being very much at the heart of the 100th anniversary celebrations. The physical media activity includes a mammoth 30-film Studio Collection Box Set, featuring classics from The Wizard Of Oz more than 80 years ago right up to 2022’s Elvis, all in 4K, many for the the first time. The set, in premium packaging, comes with added extras such as a set of badges and is due in September. In addition there are a series of five-film 4K packages, released steadily throughout the year, with the first themed set, Classic Hollywood 4K Collection 1930s-1960s, released last month. One of the most eagerly awaited (certainly around these parts) is the New Hollywood 4K Collection (1970s-1980s), which will feature a first ever 4K for Enter The Dragon, arriving in August. All four Superman films have also received the 4K treatment, with the films having landed individually on April 17 or as part of a Steelbook set with the entire quartet.
Further activity for Warner around its centenary has seen a brand new restoration of Cool Hand Luke getting an airing courtesy of the Dublin International Film Festival, preceding a year-long burst of theatrical activity, having kicked off with the aforementioned Superman The Movie last month and also including the likes of The Exorcist and Elf in November. There will be cinema activity at the BFI Southbank and IMAX with concerts highlighting soundtracks and scores for classic Warner films and further licensed products being launched.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“Former Warner Bros marketer Richard Burniston also enjoyed making special features. For 2002’s Bend It Like Beckham, he filmed director Gurinder Chadha cooking aloo gobi with her mum and auntie. This 14-minute featurette was inspired by a single line in the film. ‘We took the creative freedom with both hands,’ Burniston says. He won an award for the menu for Kevin & Perry Go Large, for which he filmed comedian Harry Enfield in character as Kevin for a short intro. ‘There’s one point where he gets an absolutely giant erection,’ Burniston gleefully recalls.”
It was published a few months ago, but the Guardian piece on the return of interest in DVD menus (moving menus!) featured some old pals of ours and was a fascinating read… You can see it here.
