CHICO ALVAREZ
El Montunero: Country Roots/Urban Masters - With the Palomónte Afro-Cuban Big Band
Mafimba / CD
Originally released: 2012
Category: SALSA/SON; SON, GUARACHA, GUAJIRA
EditorsPick:
(Featuring Edy Martinez, Ruben Rodriguez, Wilson “Chembo” Corniel, Luis Mangual Jr., Johnny Rodriguez, Mauricio Smith Jr., Oscar Hernandez, Sergio Rivera, Eddie “Guagua” Rivera and many others!)

The big band sounds of Machito, José Curbelo, Count Basie, Tito Puente, Tito Rodríguez and many others were as natural to New Yorkers as the unrelenting noise of the subway.
So, what would you think if I told you that there is someone currently in the process of discarding the safety of the small combo for the uncertainty of a big band? In fact, there is already someone who has successfully completed the dreaded transition. He is a well-known New York radio personality, the vocalist and bandleader Ernesto "Chico" Alvarez...
Palomonte's repertoire includes original tunes and cover versions of recognizable hits of the past updated, in modern arrangements, to reflect today's popular styles. The group's sound is undoubtedly that of a big band that includes a five horn brass section, four reeds, piano, bass, drum set and a full Latin percussion detail with Chico on lead vocals - all of it under the masterful musical direction of the highly regarded Colombian pianist Edy Martinez. Call it salsa or són, Chico and his whole crew have well absorbed the Afro-Cuban idioms and have produced an album's worth of fine dance music that never loses its true essence... With the release of this album, Chico has finally gotten the sound of his big band captured. The album charts are definitely designed as music for the dancing crowd... (Very Highly Recommended)

ISRAEL "CACHAO" LOPEZ
Cuban Jam Sessions in Miniature "Descargas"
Vampi Soul (original import) / CD
Category: DANCE TRADITIONS; DESCARGAS/MAMBO; CUBA
EditorsPick: (With bonus tracks!) The roots of modern salsa can effectively be traced to these 1950s jam sessions. Of course, there are many other parts to those roots, but the vernacular created here is the pool from which much has been, and continues to be, borrowed. Hard to beat this CD.

"The second most important Cuban jam session after the Julio Gutierrez/Nino Rivera Panart recording." (Phil Riggio)

"The original jam sessions that rocked the world directly from Cuba. It featured the best soloists and rhythm section of the time. All Hall-of-Famers." (Nelson Rodriguez)

"The master of the bass leads an all-star lineup in one of the most swinging records in the history of Latin music. Tata Güines laying down his funky tumbao, 'Yeyo' Iglesias popping the bongoes, 'El Negro' Vivar (my favorite trumpet player) wailing away, 'Peruchin' Justiz digging into the piano--not to mention the great Cachao himself locking it all into place. 'Fuhgeddaboudit' (as we say in New York) - anyone who doesn't feel like dancing when 'Cógele El Golpe' kicks in, has got either ice water in their veins, or wouldn't know a bongo from a banjo--even if they were hit over the head with it." (Henry Fiol)

"The classic rhythm section and the very best soloists on a recording that will live forever. Thank God it is now on CD. Cachao is truly a maestro." (Larry Harlow)

"This is the true salsa musician's bible on record. Anyone who plays this music has listened to and learned from this wonderful album of descargas (jam sessions), featuring legends such as Guillermo Barreto, Pedro Justiz 'Peruchín', Tata Güines, Rogelio Iglesias, Generoso Jiménez, Niño Rivera and many others. Cachao is truly one of Latin music's pioneers, and now into his 70's, he is enjoying renewed popularity in his career. He is one of the founding fathers of the mambo, and a brilliant bassist and composer." (Rebeca Mauleón)

"Historic recording with Tata Güines, Guillermo Barreto and Rogelio 'Yeyito' Iglesias on percussion. I have literally listened to this recording hundreds of times and have analyzed Barreto's timbale solos. The music really swings. A 'must have' for your collection." (Victor Rendón)

"Bebo Valdes was the first to record a Cuban descarga in Cuba, but it was this album that was heard around the world and elevated Cachao from sideman to superstar." (Max Salazar)

"A recording with top sidemen, including Cachao, Peruchin, El Negro Vivar, Tata Güines, El Nino Rivera, Richard Egues and Generoso. Great performances, fantastic selections, incredible percussion and imaginative horn solos." (Al Santiago)

"I remember driving all over Miami looking for Cachao’s Descarga albums. When I found one, it was like finding a treasure. The solo and ensemble playing, it's like the University of Cuban Music! A must!" (Chuck Silverman)

"The classic recording that belongs in every Latin music lover's library. You'll always return to this release, with it's sleek, hot sounds." (Nina Lenart)

"My favorite recording of all time! What a rhythm section! If this recording doesn't make you feeling like dancing...see a doctor." (Al Santiago)

"Havana's hippest players got together and didn't write it down. A cornerstone of modern Cuban jazz. Essential to your collection, period." (Ned Sublette)

"Cachao, like Arsenio, is one of the great innovators of popular Cuban dance music. During the late 30s Cachao and his brother Orestes Lopez introduced a mambo section into the danzon. Cachao is as much at home playing in a symphony as with rumba or Bata drums." (David Peñalosa)

"If you're a serious music lover or musician, aspiring or otherwise, this CD is essential. I have heard this recording called 'The Bible' by many musicians and it sounds gorgeous." (Raul Rico)

Following successive explosions of brown-eyed and Latin soul in Los Angeles and New York in the mid and late '60s, Lorain, Ohio's Boricua underdogs went on a recording tear in nearby Cleveland, going all-in on a series of no-budget recordings at Boddie and Way Out. With a voice that rivaled any on the Fania roster, Willie Marquez led the rotating cast of Latino teens through numerous underfunded recording sessions for the Day-Wood, Beth, and Lorain Sounds imprints, the lo-fi fruits of which are compiled here. AFRO BOP ALLIANCE
Una Más
OA2 Records / CD
Originally released: 2011
Category: LATIN JAZZ; LATIN JAZZ
EditorsPick: “Listening to the exquisite playing and arranging of the Afro Bop Alliance is always an experience. The mix they've achieved is so balanced you never feel the music is too Latin to be jazz, or too jazzy to be Latin.” -Paquito D'Rivera.
The 2008 Latin Grammy Award winners for "Latin Jazz Album of the Year," return with their all-star fueled big band for another powerful recording of dynamic new compositions. With special guests including Dave Samuels and Roberto Quintero, they perform works by Luis Perdomo, Hector Martignon, Dave Samuels, Mike Pope and Vince Norman.
"Una Más is an outstanding set of Latin jazz from the D.C. area's finest Latin big band. The band makes use of surprisingly complex arrangements of largely new compositions, both Latin pieces transformed into somewhat jazzier arrangements (as in the opening "Golpe de Cumaco") and jazz pieces given a Latin flavor (as in main arranger Vince Norman's "El Otoño"). Rounded out with a few Latinized classic pieces from the likes of Cal Tjader and Benny Golson, the band swings strongly through a variety of Afro-bop, post-bop, and modern Latin jazz realms. The key here isn't just in the arrangements, though. It's in the performances, with the group displaying much of what separates a modern big band from a classic-styled big band -- an ability to create large-scale fanfares and harmonies as a group, but to back down and allow long solos to shine..." - Adam Greenberg, AllMusic

Cuba Music Records (original import) / CD
Originally released: 2011
Category: SALSA/SON; TIMBA; CUBA
EditorsPick: Combinacion de La Habana comes back with a revelation of Cuban timba, their latest and much-anticipated 2011 album: “Farandula Tropical”.
The brand new production from Combinacion holds 10 awesome tracks, most of them composed by the genius director and pianist Gerson Valdez (Bebo’s nephew and second cousin of Chucho Valdes)... Combinacion is enjoying a massive wave of Cuban dancers’ esteem, the kind of appreciation of the sold-out kind, which puts the band among the greatest Cuban timba orchestras of the moment. “Farandula Tropical” sees the involvement of a remarkable Tirso Duarte in the song “Ajustate el cinturon”, surely one of the hits, together with “Asì soy yo”, “Farandula Tropical”, “No se como decirte que te quiero”, “Las mujeres de la actualidad”. Songs that have already a big success such as “Ponte pa la pelicula” and “La Discrecion”, which have been revealed in the live concerts, finally get to the audience, optimized in this new record production...
