The Lion's Roar

February 2017

From the Church Guy
Our friend is now a Rector! Lisa Busby did a year of internship here at St. Mark’s, and then was ordained deacon and priest. After serving in Chenango County churches, she was called to Scottsboro, Alabama to serve St. Luke’s Episcopal Church there.

On Wednesday evening, January 25, she was installed as the Rector of the parish. She described the service in an e-mail to me, and it sounds like her bishop gave a tremendous sermon, with great words to both priest and congregation. And her youth group was involved in making symbolic presentations to her.

I’ve been through a few of these services myself as a Rector (including not one, but TWO here at St. Mark’s), and it sounds to me like she is off to a great start as a Rector.

She remains grateful to this wonderful parish in Chenango Bridge, and I think we gave her a good foundation to build on as she continues her work as a priest.

All of us are given a job, a vocation, a calling, by God, and it’s a joy to see people come alive with joy as they find significant work to do in Christ’s community of love. I’ve seen it in you, and know that’s not gonna stop!

Youth Group & Fr. Mark:  Skating on Thin Ice
On Sunday, February 5, St. Mark’s youth in grades 7-12 are invited to have pizza at church at 11:30, and then we will go ice skating at Broome Community College’s rink. We did this last year and had a great time.  Kids should bring $5 for the skating and $4 for skate rental. (Fr. Mark and Eric & Sabrina Laine will provide the pizza and bottled water.) Don’t miss the chance to see Fr. Mark’s complete lack of “Skill on Skates!”

Book Club - February
At our February meeting, we will discuss Lucky You, a comic-crime novel by Carl Hiassen about a Florida woman who wins millions in the lottery, only to have her ticket stolen. Rich with screwball characters and unbelievable situations, the story pits the “lucky” winner against another winner, who, with his raunchy sidekick, wants the whole $28 million jackpot to start his own underground militia. The group will meet at Denny’s on Monday, February 6 at 1:00 p.m.

 St. Mark's Table for February
The third Tuesday of February is the 21st, and we’ll gather at the Table in the undercroft at 6:00 p.m.  It’s a potluck, so bring a dish to share on the common table, along with your own place setting. We eat and talk and enjoy, and conclude with a short and sweet Table Eucharist. Everyone is welcome!

 March 1 is Ash Wednesday
To mark the beginning of Lent, the season of penitence and contemplation, you are encouraged to attend Eucharist on Ash Wednesday. We have three services scheduled for your convenience:  6:30 a.m., noon, and 6:00 p.m. The service includes the imposition of ashes with the solemn words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”
