MARY ROACH will discuss
Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex
Tuesday, April 28th at 7 PM
The bestselling author of Stiff has written an impeccably
researched and hilarious tribute to "the men and women who dared" —
dared to use hard science to search for better, more satisfying sex.
Roach reveals the "occasionally noble, sporadically ghastly, ever
surreal world" of researchers in the often mysterious and frustrating
field of sexual physiology. Chapters include: "The Upsuck Chronicles,"
"The Lady's Boner," and "What Would Allah Say?"
Don't miss this
entertaining event with "the funniest science writer in the country." (Burkhard Bilger, The New Yorker).

SHAWNA YANG RYAN will read from
Water Ghosts
Thursday, April 30th at 7 PM
Ryan's debut novel, a finalist for the 2008 Northern California Book
Award, is a mesmerizing story of a community of Chinese immigrants in a
small California town in 1928, and the ghosts who haunt them. A boat
bearing three bedraggled Chinese women appears through the mists of the
Sacramento Delta, throwing the community into confusion. As the lives
of the townspeople become intertwined with the newly arrived women, a
flood threatens to wash away the entire town, and the frightening power
of these women from the mist is revealed.
