Howdy Family & Friends!

Port Angeles, WA
September 16 & 17
I am honored to perform “Drop of Water” at the ceremony to celebrate the removal of the Elwha River Dam in the Olympic National Park. Our region has been working for decades to have this dam removed. The Elwha River was home to one of the largest salmon runs in the region. Efforts are underway to plant native plants in the drained area. I’m looking forward to watching the salmon find their way back to this spectacular river. I’m also looking forward to singing “Drop of Water” with Secretary of State Ken Salazar and Governor Christine Gregoire. We’ve been practicing for weeks.

The ceremony on September 17 is limited to invited folks and some folks from Port Angeles, as the location near the dam can only handle so many people. There are celebrations open to everyone going on in Port Angeles all weekend, including my concert Friday night September 16 at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center (details below).

Bellingham Parties!!
Chuckanut Ridge Purchased From Bank
September 1
Wow. I’ve been part of our community’s effort to protect Chuckanut Ridge since I moved to Bellingham in 1991. Chuckanut Ridge is one of the largest remaining privately-owned forests in Bellingham. Two weeks ago our City Council voted unanimously to buy it. Bellingham Mayor Dan Pike led the effort. In an epic 30-year battle between neighborhood activists and big developers, we have taken a giant step toward creating the Chuckanut Ridge Park. A long list of Bellingham musicians will be performing at the celebration on Thursday, September 1 (details below).

Grizzlies, Wolverine & the Spirit of Walkin’ Jim
I returned yesterday from trips to Alaska and Montana. What can I say: it’s hard to come back to civilization after time in the wilderness. In Alaska I did a solo backpack trip in Denali National Park. I retraced the same route that I took when I was twenty. I ran into a mother grizzly bear and 2 cubs twice. Both times I thought about how this is THE situation to avoid in the backcountry. Fortunately they didn’t seem bothered by me and I’m here to tell the tale. What beautiful creatures they are.

Denali National Park

One night I camped out in a quiet tundra valley with about 300 ground squirrels and 38 marmots. Talk about a predator food mall. I was watching the sunlight on the mountains that evening when sure enough I see a large animal coming up the valley checking out squirrel burrows. It was as big as a bear cub (I thought, oh no, not again!), but with my binoculars it looked more like a wolf. Except it wasn’t a wolf either. I watched what I thought might be a wolverine for half an hour, loping around quickly, checking burrow after burrow after burrow. It didn’t see me. When it went over the ridge it was starting to get cold (it snowed that night), so I headed back to the tent to read Walkin’ Jim Stoltz book “Walking With the Wild Wind.” I turned the page and Jim was describing a wolverine, one of the rarest animals in North America. Sure enough, it was a wolverine I had seen.

Walkin' Jim Stoltz
In Montana I had the honor of going on a five-day backpack trip in the Scapegoat Wilderness with five of Walkin’ Jim’s closest people to spread his ashes. It was a trip filled with laughter and tears and appreciation. I had never looked out over the Montana prairie from the high Rocky Mountains before. It was breathtaking. On the seemingly endless ride home from Montana I listened to many of Walkin’ Jim’s albums. “What it means to be alive” was an often-repeated theme in many of his songs.

Hope to see you at one of the shows. Or out in the woods.
