Next Wednesday we are being treated to three short talks by BPS members, these are Margaret Chambers, Robert Harris and Paul Moran. This is what these brave souls say about their talks:
Margaret
The presentation will include some species that are so abundant photographers often forget to point the camera their way.
"Snaps from a Holiday Photographer" will comprise largely wildlife/nature shots, including some that frustrate me as well as favourites.
Robert
I joined BPS after attending the beginner’s course when you met at Clifton. I found my way into the intermediate group and enjoyed taking transparencies and working in the darkroom printing black and white work.
Work, promotion and relocation took its toll, we moved away from Bristol and my club photography diminished but the camera was never put away. When I retired in 2014, I decided to do a BA in photography part time. I am now in the final year.
I took the opportunity to rejoin BPS during covid and also took the opportunity to enter Salons, Year one started with mixed results, still a little learning to be done but enjoying the club world again.
The presentation FULL CIRCLE cannot cover 30 years of photography, what I can do is inform people of my journey and photography in the two camps, (academic and pictorial)
Paul
My presentation is titled: Buzz, Beauty and Brains
I am focusing on the most recent few years of my photography, taking portraits, documentary pictures and travel. I will also cover my MA Photography and what one needs to achieve a pass.
This promises to be an entertaining and informative evening, so please come along and support your fellow members and show them the appreciation they deserve for putting themselves in the firing line!

As many of you are aware we have awarded medals and trophies this year for the various club competitions.
Due to the vagaries of not all members attending in person, it was not always possible to present all the trophies.
Next Wednesday is the members' evening and the trophies will on display in the cabinet, they have now been engraved with winner’s names. The cabinet doors will be open so if you wish you can have a look at the one which you have won.
The chairman will be presenting the medals as listed for the various competitions and it would be really good to see everybody who has won a medal to be present to receive it.

Projected Image Competition - Closing Date |
Competition Time Is here again - Bi-monthly competitions are back!
Just a reminder that the entry deadline for the first round of the Projected Image competition is 7 September. The prescribed topic is 'Endurance' - so, stick at it and have a go!
These competitions consist of 4 rounds at roughly two-monthly intervals. Club level entrants may submit a maximum of 3 PDI images or prints in each round of the applicable competition. Intermediate and Advanced entrants may submit a maximum of 2 images. Across the four rounds these points are accumulated. Trophies are presented in each of the 3 levels (Club, Intermediate, and Advanced) to the holders of the highest number of points at the end of the four rounds. The trophies will be presented at the club AGM.
Prescribed Topic Challenge
For entrants at all levels, one of their 3 or 2 images may be submitted for an optional Prescribed topic challenge in each round. These will be judged together, regardless of the entrant’s level. This entry must be identified with the letter P, not the level letter. Points gained for the Prescribed topic will, however, accrue to the entrant’s score at the appropriate level.
A separate tally of Prescribed scores will be kept, with awards for the PDI and Print winners at the end of the season.

Masters of Prints - Important Rule Change |
After representation from a couple of clubs, the PAGB has accepted that it is unjust to ban photographs used in the most recent national Interclub Print and PDI Championships. Rule 2.3 is therefore amended to read:
2.3 Images
We are seeking unfamiliar work and not images which already have an exhibition history.
Therefore, no image should be entered which has been previously seen in a National or
PAGB event or which has been published in an exhibition catalogue, including a DVD or on-line catalogue, and is not eligible if it has been accepted previously in any category of any
previous masters of print Competition. Images which have only been seen inside the
Entrant’s Club or in local inter-Club competitions and any which have not been exhibited
outside your Federation are eligible.
Exceptionally, images which have been used as part of a Club entry to the PAGB Inter-Club
Print and/or PDI Championships in the same calendar year as entry to the Masters of Print are eligible.
An Image by a Photographer, or an Image so similar as to be nearly identical, may only be
entered into one of the Categories. |
This is to let budding nature photographers know that entry into the FIAP Nature Biennial Selection process closes in a couple of weeks (11 September). I'm given to understand that at the moment entry numbers are low, so there is a good chance of being selected.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.
The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
