1986 to release Everybody Is Whatever I Think They Are TOMORROW!
Giving record away for free!

NEW MP3 (Cleared to post) - 1986 - "Black Spring"

"The good news about the 90s revival currently hovering on the cultural horizon like a jaded, soul-patched vulture is that there will be more bands like 1986." - Chicago Reader

The long-awaited sophomore release from 1986, Everybody Is Whatever I Think They Are, releases tomorrow, March 9, 2010;  and they're giving it away for free!  Kind of.

Influenced by the seemingly infinite cases of pyramid schemes that riddled the headlines of global news papers in 2009, 1986 thought they would take a page from the play book of the likes of Bernie Maddoff to service the record to the general public. After all, if he was capable of swindling some of the richest and brightest that the world had to offer, beguiling the youth of America seemed highly achievable.

With a dash of irony, a heavy helping of satire, and a brief study of Terry Gilliam’s early work, here’s how the site works:

1986 is the project of Giorgio Angelini and Cully Symington; two musicians you’ve probably already seen or heard if you’ve ever listened to Bishop Allen, The Rosebuds, The Gutter Twins, Cursive, or Okkervil River. Between the hectic touring schedules of these bands, Giorgio and Cully pieced together the record they always wanted to make.

Recording began in Austin, Texas (home-base for Cully and Giorgio) in November, 2007. At the helm of the recording: TJ Doherty, longtime recording engineer for Wilco.  Entering the studio, most of the songs were unrealized riffs and melodies written on the road. In-studio collaboration with both Doherty and Bill Elm (of Friends of Dean Martinez) helped bring together the pieces, resulting in a record with few limits in both style and volume. After capturing the basic tracks, the band enlisted the help of other musicians to contribute to the recordings, including Jesus Lizard guitarist, Duane Denison, and Adam Franklin, of Swervedriver.

The album is not only the product of its influences but also represents the experiences Symington and Angelini had touring and recording in other people’s bands. Lyrically, the songs are about relationships, as most pop music tends to be, but songs like “Aunts Marching” and “Arrows” speak about a disconnect, a detachment from one’s own generation.

If there is one guiding principle to 1986, it must be to make it loud. Make the volume loud. Make the message loud. Make the show loud. Make the attitudes loud. Do what you want, but for God’s sake, make it loud!
