Stitchin’, Bitchin’, New Year, New Knits, and Newbies

Christmas Party Pics... Newbies Meeting... Techno Knits... Join our Messageboard

Shiny new 2009 greetings to you

We hope this newsletter finds you stuffed with Christmas food, pickled with New Year Eve drinks, and ready to turn over a new leaf (perhaps a knitted one) for the New Year. We’re here to help you get back into the woolly swing of things with your first dose of 2009 knitting news.

PLEASE NOTE: Our newbie’s meeting has been moved to Thursday the 8th of January.

January is all about new beginnings, and so it’s this time of year we like to give additional encouragement to those of you who keep promising yourself that you’ll come along to a meeting or learn to knit, by reminding you what S&B London is all about.

The group is absolutely free. It is open to people of any age and level of experience; from total beginners to grand masters of the knit. So grab some yarn and needles, turn up at a meeting, sit down anywhere you like, and if you need any help or want to learn, summon up your new year courage and just ask – it’s as simple as that.

Feel free to come to any meeting that suits you ,although if you particularly self conscious about being new, why not come along to our Newbies meeting on Thursday the 8th of January, where there will be many people in the same knitted boat as you. Newcomers are welcomed all year round, so if you can’t make this meeting we hope to see you at some point in 2009.

We’d also like to invite you to blather incessantly about knitting on our Ravelry message board. Mmm messagey.

Our last meeting of 2008 was our Christmas Party and Secret Santa at the Clarence pub, which saw our giant Christmas stocking overflow with knitted gifts you so lovingly crafted (one was even cast off and dropped in just minutes before the draw). This year saw some of the most beautiful handmade gifts yet, including a fabulous white shawl, some rather fetching gloves, and even a Santa-faced Christmas Stocking.

After the draw the fun continued as we tried to work out who had knitted what… Secret you say? Phah! You can check out all the knitted goodness and yarn flavoured festivities here or amongst our other knitting escapades on our Flickr group.

Stitch and New Year Newbies and Names

Details of the next meeting:

Come one, come all for our first meeting of the year. For those of you who have not yet plucked up the courage to come to a meeting before we make an extra special effort this week to encourage you to join us and start stitching.

We thought we’d help out with a few name badges this first meeting of the year too. So newbie’s can learn names, and for a bit of a memory jog for the rest of us. We’ll bring the stickers. You bring your names.

As always we will be teaching our socks off if you want to learn. Knitters old and new are welcome too. So grab some yarn and needles and take the plunge – we promise not to bite.

Stitch and an End to Rubbish Christmas Presents

It’s the same story every year.  You spied an interesting looking present under the Christmas tree and then come Christmas morning…..oh, it’s just another set of bubble baths that you will never use.  So much for the iPhone and the Ferrari you put on your Christmas list, eh?

If this tale of disappointment sounds familiar to you, perhaps it’s time you stopped leaving things to Santa (he’s too busy drinking brandy and eating mince pies anyway) and take matters into your own knitty hands.

Why not knit yourself an iPhone?  With outstanding battery life, this iPhone will never crash and will still work even after you drop it in your pint of beer at after a few too many at the pub.

“And what about that Ferrari I wanted?!” I hear you cry.  Yes, you can knit yourself one of those too!  With lower than average carbon emissions not only will you be the envy of Jeremy Clarkson, you can also turn up to S&B meetings in style.  Best of all it’s mostly made up of simple garter stitch, an ideal project for new knitters.*

*Disclaimer: S&B London take no responsibility for functionality of items or the undertaking of knitting a Ferrari.

Stitch and Message Board Mayhem

You’ve been to the meetings, you’ve eaten the cake, you’ve spent the evening laughing till tea comes out of your nose. But now you have a week till the next S&B. Alas! What shall you do? Sitting at home talking to the cat just isn’t the same (he is awful for talking to you when you’re trying to count stitches).

Do not fear lovely S&B Londoner for our Ravelry message board is here to fill in those non-S&B gaps in your life. Yay!

For those of you who don’t know Ravelry (where in heavens have you been?!) it is the best and woolliest place on the web. There you can show off pics of your triumphant knits (and the shameful ones too), organize your stash, see what your knitty pals are up to, and pootle along to our message board to unwind whatever is tangled up in your woolly thoughts.

It only takes a couple of days for Ravelry membership to come through now, and it’s all free. So get over there immediately and start the New Year with a bit of online S&Bing. Once you’re online you can S&B whenever you need to. No more cold turkey (unless you still have some in the fridge, in which case you might want to think about throwing it out by now…).

We hope you can come and join us for a knit in 2009. Already in the pipeline for us this year are more new venues, summer meetings in the park, and another fabulous Knit-Crawl. We look forward to meeting you and your knitting soon.

Till then Keeeeeep Stitching!
