Wednesday 17 August
Next Wednesday, 17 August, we will have a chance to see work from some of our own members. The evening promises to be one with plenty of variety with something for everyone. Both halves of the evening will end with print presentations which will allow members to look at the prints close up. The programme for the evening is as follows:
  • Keith Wood  'Sports Photography' (PDI)
  • Sue O'Connell  'Travels 2016 (so far)' (PDI)
  • Peter Geldard  'Old ones, new ones, loved ones, neglected ones' (Print)
  • INTERVAL
  • Gerry Gill   'Some A-Vs to delight'
  • Peter Brisley  'Mainly Monochrome - A selection of travel and abstract images' (Print)

Bob Faris Retrospective
The BPS walls are resplendent with an exhibition of prints by long-standing member and former President Bob Faris. Bob is one of the longest serving members of the Society, having joined in 1972. He has delved deep into his archive and come up with a personal retrospective of his distinguished and continuing photographic career. As many of you who were at this week's meeting will have seen, this an exhibition of work that should not be missed.

Calumet & YouTube
If you follow this link you can see the clubroom studio being used by Calumet for one of their YouTube ads. This is one way that we are maximising the facilities we have and making some money towards its upkeep.

Dates For Your Diary
A few things to put in your diary for the weeks ahead:

Balloon Fiesta - This will be over this weekend, 11 - 14 August. As usual the Fiesta will include mass balloon ascents on each day and a whole raft of different entertainment at Ashton Court in between. Full details can be found on the Fiesta website, www.bristolballoonfiesta.co.uk

ThunderCat Racing - This is a new event to this neck of the woods and is a very exciting form of powerboat racing using 4 metre inflatable catamarans all fitted with hugely powerful engines strapped to their rear ends. The racing takes place over the Bank Holiday weekend (27 - 28 August) and will run over a course based around Clevedon Pier. Full details can be found here.

Lawn Mower Racing - Fed up with those genteel Sunday afternoon flits around your lawn with the Flymo? If so, the place to be over the Bank Holiday weekend is just off the A38 at Lower Weare near Axbridge. This is a weekend to suit all, F1 lawnmowers, music, classic cars - and if none of that floats your boat, there is always the beer tent! For full details, please go to their website - www.mendipmowing.co.uk

Frampton Country Fair - This annual event is being held on 11 September at Frampton on Severn. This covers everything that you'd expect to find at a country fair from green wellies to an aerobatic display. Please visit their website for full details.

Colin Varndell - Sodbury & Yate Camera Club are hosting a special event on 12 September. They have invited the renowned landscape and wildlife photographer Colin Varndell to give one of his special talks. The event will be held at the Charter Suite at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall. Tickets (£5) can be obtained through tickets@sypc.org.uk or by ringing Eileen 01454 778882.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Photographic Acronyms
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list.

Items For Sale
6ft Sapphire electric projection screen. The Society has a projection screen for sale; it originally cost £330 and we are offering it at a knock down price of £75.
If you are interested, either have a word with me (Pete) at any Wedneday meeting or email me at newsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk

Digital Projector
Club member Derek Dorsett, who died recently, has left a digital projector which someone might like to purchase. It is an NEC VT 575 Model and is lightweight and comes in a carrying case with remote and cables. Instructions for use are available on line. It has not tested it but we have no reason to believe it is not in good working order. If anybody would like to test /try it at home, please contact John Chamberlin to arrange a handover. A price of about £50 ono seems reasonable as all money will go to charity. John's email address is jgchamberlin@yahoo.co.uk or you can phone 0117 9299565.

If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address.

Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk
The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, if they are wrong, please let Carol know.
