Hello Firstname

Wednesday 16 August
Next Wednesday we get the chance to see rising stars of BPS when a number of Society members present an evening of their own pictures. This always proves to be a highly popular evening, so please come along to support these brave chaps, some of whom may not have stood up in front of an audience before.

Those presenting their pictures will be:
  • Mike Hall: DPI  - Some Memorable Places
  • Brian McBride: Prints (probably) - Beginning Again
  • Mark Gilbert: DPI - Flash! Bang! Wallop! What a Picture!
  • Tim Woolf: DPI/prints - My ARPS Street Panel

Digital Imaging Group
Next Monday, 14 August, is the monthly meeting of the DI Group. As usual, all are welcome to this informal gathering and you are encouraged to bring along images to show the rest of group; you can bring either prints or projected (jpegs on USB devices only please). It doesn't matter if you just want to show off what you have been doing, or you want advice on a specific problem, it all goes towards making these evenings successful.
As a reward, I'm sure that Ashwin will delve into his secret stash of chocolate biscuits for the tea break - as good a reason as any to turn up!

2017-2018 Programme
The new 2017-2018 BPS programme is now on the web, you see what treats await you for the next 12 months by following this link. The printed versions are now with the printers and should be available for distribution at next Wednesday's meeting. Please note that, owing to a chance to visit that wonderful holiday destination of Chernobyl, our illustrious leader has had to move the Chairman's Evening to 13 September and that the new season will kick off with a talk by Ian Wade entitled Urban Wildlife of Malaysia and Underwater Photography - more details closer to the date.

Problems With The Newsletter
For some time now, the reliability of the company we use to send the Newsletter has been steadily getting worse, with many members reporting that their Newsletters have not been arriving. As the Newsletter is an important method of getting information to members, reliabilty of delivery is crucial. I am at present looking at alternative companies who might be able to fulfil the role, but if any members have experience of suitable companies that we could use, please let me know at newsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk.
One option that is open to us is to adopt the system that the PAGB use, which is to email members, not with the full newsletter, but with a link to download their own copy. Perhaps you could let me know what you think of that option, or any other suggestions you may have.

Advanced Warning - Impending Closing Date
Please note that the first meeting of the new programme is also the closing date for Round 1 of the Projected Image Competition. Don't forget the new rules which come into effect for this round; this means that the subject for the "prescribed category" is on the theme of Transport (how you interpret Transport is entirely up to you). A copy of the new rules is reproduced below:

Bimonthly Print and Projected Image Competitions
Rounds 1, 2, 3 and 4

These competitions consist of 4 rounds, at roughly two monthly intervals. Each member may submit a maximum of 3 PI images or prints in each round of the applicable competition.  First, second and third places, along with highly commended entries are awarded certificates in each level and points are allocated to these awards.  Across the four rounds these points are accumulated.  Trophies are presented in each of the 3 levels (Club, Intermediate, and Advanced) to the holders of the highest number of points at the end of the four rounds. The trophies will be presented at the club AGM.

For DPI and Print rounds at Advanced Level

For the advanced level only, the competitions will be subdivided into an ‘open’ category and a ‘prescribed’ category. In each round, two submitted images can be in the 'open' category, the subject and style being the free choice of the entrant.  The third image submitted must be in the genre/subject/style category specified for each competition, as shown below.

PI COMP 2017-18
PRINT COMP 2017-18
Round 1
Transport
Monochrome
Round 2

Round 3
Close-up/Macro

Round 4

Images submitted to the 'prescribed' category must show the number 3 as the image identifying number.  See ‘rules for entry’ on Pages 26 and 28.

A member who chooses to submit a ‘prescribed’ category image may also enter one or two images in the same genre/subject/style for the 'open' category submissions.  A member may submit an 'Image 3' to the ‘prescribed’ category only, and nothing to the ‘open’ category, if desired.

In each round, the ‘genre’ category Image 3s will be judged together, with 1st, 2nd, 3rd and HCs being awarded, in addition to the awards for the 'open' images.  The appropriate points for accumulation across the rounds will also accrue.

Photokina
Those of you who like to go just a bit further than the local branch of Jessops when it comes to looking for new camera kit, might like to know that Photokina in Cologne will be switching to be an annual event from 2018. It's in September 2018, but from 2019 onwards it will be in May. A press release, viewable in this link, explains all.

Thanks to Paul Moran for this.

Dates For Your Diary
This weekend
The return of Thundercat racing to Clevedon. This is a great free event for those who fancy photographing high speed powerboats as they race around a course set with the pier at its heart. If you're feeling flush, you can pay to go on the pier and watch all the action from the pier itself. Follow this link for more information.
Racing starts at 10.30am and goes on to 1.20pm on both Saturday and Sunday
This weekend The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is Europe’s largest annual meeting of hot air balloons, attracting over 130 hot air balloons from across the globe, the Fiesta truly is a sight that can only be seen in Bristol. Held over four days in August at Ashton Court Estate, the event is completely free with charges made for parking on the event site. Tickets can be purchased here. Alongside the fantastic sight of hot air balloons filling the skies, we have a large number of great trade stands, fairground rides and entertainment. Download our useful guide to your visit here.
25 Aug
The excellent LCE (London Camera Exchange) Baldwin Street are holding a photography event at Leigh Court (Grade II listed building in Abbots Leigh, Bristol). It comes under the heading of Bristol Leica Group but we are assured it is NOT restricted to Leica photographers. With 6 models plus access to the entire grounds and every single room for the whole day it is quite a big deal!! Cost just £20 for the day but places are limited to around 15. Only proviso is that models get use of images for their portfolios. Our understanding is that copyright stays with photographer (but please check this). Check out the Bristol Leica Photography Group on Facebook and if interested call Tom (LCE) on 01179 29 1935 to reserve a place.
Sept onwards
Clifton Cameras & Swarovski are holding a nature walk at Frampton on Severn and digiscoping classes in the Forest of Dean during September. You can find details of these and other events organised by Clifton Cameras by visiting their website - click here.

ITS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY FINDING "DATES FOR YOUR DIARY", SO I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF MEMBERS COULD LET ME KNOW OF ANY EVENTS, EXHIBITIONS OR PICTURE LOCATIONS THAT THEY THINK WOULD BE OF INTEREST. DATES AND WEB LINKS WOULD HELP

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
BPS member Sue O’Connell at the opening of the Travel Photographer of the Year exhibition in Greenwich where she was congratulated by RPS President Walter Benzie and Director General Michael Pritchard, on her “Highly Commended” entry, which can be seen to the right of the all-important wine glass and stuck on the end of Walter Benzie's finger. The exhibition continues until 3 September: full details here.
There is still plenty of time to enter this year’s TPOTY competition - the closing date is over a month away, 25 September. I'm sure there are others among you who could also do well - for entry details, please follow this link.

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Items For Sale
If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address.
